John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

January 12, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Dark and cloudy at the freezing point for my morning. โ˜ Damp with coming rain showers. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Probably the darkest morning I can remember for the morning walk except for Election Day last year when I was up early to see the lunar eclipse.

Out for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ on this dark morning. I think part of the reason it’s so dark out is I’m actually on time โŒš for once for the walk. I was running slow getting up and had a quick breakfast which helped. At the end of the day yesterday I ended up with 19,500 steps or about nine miles which isn’t bad for a weekday. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ My goal these days is walk an average of seven miles a day or fifty miles a week.

Today will rain and snow likely before 1pm, then a chance of rain after 2pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 42 degrees at 4pm. Already a few flurries around. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 6th. South wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 12.8 inches of snow fell back in 2011.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:59 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:44 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:14 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:50 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 41 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph with gusts up to 21mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 31 seconds over today.

Tonight will rain.๐ŸŒง๏ธ Temperature rising to around 49 by 5am. South wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1968.

I’ve been noticing that the solar isn’t charging the batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ as well on my truck as it should. It might be the cloudy weather but from the meter it looks like I have a phantom ๐Ÿ‘ป load somewhere. Panel itself is sending quite a bit of power to the batteries – a few kilowatt hours since camping in December but it seems like the batteries are always a bit low.

Cold start to the Kings ๐Ÿ‘‘ weekend but improving as the days go on. Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 35. Dirty eight and sunny for Martin Luther King Day. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Ground Hog Day ๐Ÿป when the sun will be setting at 5:11 pm with dusk at 5:39 pm. On that day in 2022, we had snow, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 27 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1981.

January 11, 2023 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 29 degrees in Delmar. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am.

Out for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ after going to the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘š It took a lot longer than I thought, I almost feel like I put in two much soap. I brought my laptop ๐Ÿ’ป but I was too fried after the day at work to do anything but scroll ๐Ÿ“œ through the YouTube and social media. And then I posted my thoughts about the gas stove ban silliness. But now is the time to take action climate change or it’s never going to happen. ๐ŸŒŽ

It’s just been really busy at work lately. ๐Ÿ’ผ Just a ton of rush projects and maybe I’ve been super aggressive at grabbing whatever is at the top of the que and making sure work gets done and done well. I thought December was busy but this month has proven even busier.

Tonight will be cloudy โ˜, with a low of 28 degrees at 8pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 21st. Maximum wind chill around 23 at 8pm; Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1968.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 77% illuminated. The moon will rise at 9:23 pm. The Wolf ๐Ÿบ Moon is on Friday, January 27. The darkest hour is at 12:04 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:25 am in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:10 am with sun in the southeast (127ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of snow before 11am, then a chance of rain and sleet between 11am and noon, then rain likely after noon. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 21st. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 12.8 inches of snow fell back in 2011.โ„

Sounds like an awesome day tomorrow. As long as I get my steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ in what do I care I live in the city. It rains and snows and is generally sloppy in the city these days.๐ŸŒจ๏ธ Winter isn’t what it once was.

That said I’m excited about getting out of town this weekend. ๐ŸŒฒGoing to be cold but good weather Saturday for getting out of town. Need to check the oil on the truck but other than that it seems like it will be a good weekend.

In four weeks on February 8 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (250ยฐ) at 5:19 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 10 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 23 and 9 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 16 degrees. The record high of 52 degrees was set back in 1925.

Looking ahead, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is Next Wednesday, 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is Next Wednesday, 5:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is Next Wednesday, February ๐ŸŒง is in 3 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is a month away, March ๐ŸŒจ is in 7 weeks, Ides of March โœ is in 9 weeks, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 17 weeks, Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ is in 18 weeks, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 5 months, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 23 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 25 weeks, Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 25 weeks, World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง is in 6 months, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 33 weeks, September 11th ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 8 months, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 37 weeks, Last Sunset After 6:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 38 weeks, Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 42 weeks, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 42 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is in 43 weeks, Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 10 months and Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 47 weeks.

I am digging the thought of summer in 23 weeks and the Potholers once again. โ›บ Or maybe just a weekend at the House Pond Campsite. Though I kind of wish for something new for a change but what it will be that I do not know. I’m just so tired of the ordinary.

Darkening Skies Thru the Woods

I was reading the latest silliness about the gas stove ban that isn’t

I was reading the latest silliness about the gas stove ban that isn’t

There are very legitimate concerns about gas stoves with their open flames burning in enclosed locations. While natural gas and propane burn quite clean, they are fossil fuels and they still produce nitrogen dioxide which can trigger asthma attacks and cause health impacts. Also, with the more and more natural gas coming from fracking, often in radioactive formations, there is a risk of bringing radon into one’s home.

Years ago, with drafty old homes this was not such a problem. But more houses are often much tighter, so you have greater risk of having both radon and nitrogen oxides in your house. While heat exchangers do help bring in outside air, depending on the system, there may not be very good airflow in and out of every kitchen. Plus more and more people use air conditioning, which doesn’t allow as much airflow as open screen windows do.

Plus, now is the time to decarbonize our economy. A single gas stove doesn’t produce much carbon dioxide, but if there are millions of homes that heat with gas, a little bit adds up. And more significantly — at least in colder locations, gas stoves are a natural combination with gas-fired heating. Natural gas heating is a significant source of both gas consumption and carbon emissions — which is why carbon emissions spike in northern United States every winter. Plus, not only does natural gas produce carbon, but natural gas lines are inherently leaky, and natural gas is a powerful warming agent.

Inductance cooking has many of the same benefits of gas stoves but is much less polluting. It can be used in most locations that gas cooking has been used in the past, and has a fraction of the carbon output. Any place that has 230 volt electricity, can easily accommodate such stoves. And for off-grid and remote locations, the amount of propane gas used in conventional gas stoves is pretty de minis compared to all the propane currently used to heat and cook food in millions of urban and suburban households and businesses.

January 11, 2023 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. As Macías once played during his Christmas Day rock and roll concert in the stadium, Those were the Days. Talk about pure evil in a rather hilarious way redefining a song.

Partly cloudy and 22 degrees in Delmar. โ›… Calm wind. What you might expect for a January morning but doesn’t feel really cold because it’s not and there is no wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

A pretty sunrise ๐ŸŒ… for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ though I’m running a few minutes late so I’m walking briskly but it feels good. Got to get my steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ in although so far this week I’ve successful at that. As I know to well if I fail my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ will know and report it to me and I’ll be deemed an object failure who is obese and eats too much dairy. ๐Ÿฎ

Feeling better today, I think I was cold last night because it was a cold evening. โ„๏ธ I could turn up the heat, but once I was in bed under my heated blanket for a few minutes, I was plenty warm and left it for the balance of the night at the lowest setting. The heated blanket ๐Ÿ›Œ is still a lot cheaper then turning up the heat.

Today will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 34 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 17 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.โ„

Caught another two mouseys last night ๐Ÿ in the trap. Fished them out, wrapped in some paper and tossed them outside in with the rest of the burnables. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Works for me. So far I’m happy with the trap. It is doing it’s job, though I am not sure how many more mice there are to catch. I’ll dump out the water out back when it starts to stink. Trap: 3. Mousey: 0. Now I’ll have to patch that mouse hole again in the wall.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.6° from the due south horizon (-45.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Sun angle is finally starting to increase a notable amount. Another sign of the coming days. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:58 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:43 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:13 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:49 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 26 seconds over today.

After work I promise myself I will go to the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘” I am running out of shirts to wear to work at this point. But it’s good as I know what I will need for the weekend and next week, and by washing my dress clothes they’ll be ready when I come home on Monday from camping.

Tonight will have a chance of snow, mainly after 3am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 21st. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1968.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 33. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 36. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I’ll take it. Figuring only a few days ago they were predicting super shitty. I’ll take it as NYE sucked this year. I think I have a nice plan, with some hiking and enjoying some starry nights for Kings Weekend planned out.

Looking ahead for y’all honey lovers, next Wednesday is Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ when the sun will be setting at 4:52 pm with dusk at 5:21 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 34 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1973. I like honey especially on my pancakes ๐Ÿฅž.

Dip in Road

January 10, 2023 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar for the evening walk. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The moon ๐ŸŽ‘ is rising on this starry evening. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธCold by recent standards.

Today was everything I expected it to be. ๐Ÿ’ผ Busy for a while then quiet during the Governor’s speech. I thought it ordinary for the times we live in. Still ambitious climate change plans, it will be fascinating how it all works out. Went to a public hearing on yet another development proposed in the Albany Pine Bush. ๐ŸŒฒ it was everything you expected, the decision was made in advance. I get tired of being such a looser all the time but if nobody objects nobody will listen. Rushing out to the bus I left my headphones on my desk at home. ๐ŸŽง I normally swap between two sets so one is always charged, but I managed with the set I had at my desk.

This evening I’m feeling chilled โ„. I think we stood outside talking too long after that meeting and my suit and tie isn’t that warm even with the wool overcoat. But I was cold after I got on the bus ๐Ÿš and when I got home. I know the COVID has been going around Albany, hopefully I don’t have it. I’ve been wearing my muzzle and I’m boosted but I had that work holiday party ๐ŸŽ‰ and mom’s birthday after that. I’ll have hot coca โ˜• and hop under the heated blanket when I get home from the walk.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ with a low of 19 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. North wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 3 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 85% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:03 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:25 am in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:10 am with sun in the southeast (128ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 39 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 21 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 34 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 17 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.โ„ Before my time.

After work tomorrow I’ll drive down to the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘• That way I’ll have the clothes I will need for the coming week and weekend. Then be set maybe for next too as I wear different clothes for session days then ordinary days.

The weekend forecast keeps improving โ˜€ though it’s going to be seasonably cold. But I’m excited about the chance to get out of town for the long weekend. I often feel so trapped in the winter. โ„

In four weeks on February 7 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (250ยฐ) at 5:17 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 34 minutes and 57 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 26 and 10 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 16 degrees. The record high of 48 degrees was set back in 2005.

Looking ahead, Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is a month away, Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ is in 7 weeks, First Day of Spring ๐Ÿ’ฎ is in 10 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ is in 11 weeks, 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 months, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 4 months, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 23 weeks, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 25 weeks, World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง is in 26 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 29 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 8 months, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ is in 42 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 44 weeks, Election Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 44 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 47 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 11 months and Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 50 weeks.

Did you see ten weeks until calendar spring? ๐ŸŒท I know that they were talking about the compressed budget schedule this year with the new governor, at least on paper. April will be here before you know it though calendar ๐Ÿ—“ spring comes about a week quicker. I am still expecting colder winter weather to eventually arrive though come February.
