Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

October 23, 2015 update

The mercury seems stuck at forty this morning but it isn’t stopping it from being quite beautiful fall day today.
Tomorrow should be similarly nice.

Colors are about peak in Delmar and close in the city. Fall is such a colorful season but it doesn’t last for long. The cold and gray of November will be upon us before you know.

I don’t have much in plans for the weekend although I will be downstate this weekend for work on Saturday. Heading down to New York City for the first time in my life. Sunday depending how cold and a washout it is, I might go for a walk with my shotgun to Partridge Run. Still chewing over the 12 gauge but are leaning against it.

Trying to figure out my Massena trip. The big question is do I get a camping permit and stay up there the four nights or do I overnight somewhere in the Northern Adirondacks like Mountain Pond or maybe somewhere in the Western Adirondacks. I guess weather will partially decide such things.

October 23, 2015 morning

Forty degrees this morning. Clear as the sun rises this morning. Later, 50 degrees and sunny.

Tonight’s sunset at 6:01 PM is the last sunset after six until mid-March. The time falls back one hour starting next Sunday, November 1st. Starting in November the sun will set before 5 PM every day.

Have a great Friday. The weekend is on the way.

October 22, 2015 night

Good evening. Currently 54 degrees with an occasional breeze that has seemed to die down in the past hour or so. For the first time in a while I went for a nice evening walk. Between various events, vacation, and weather, I hadn’t been out for my walk in a while.

There are some rain showers on the way for the greater Albany area in a bit, but I don’t expect low temperature below 41 or so. Sunny tomorrow but much cooler with a high around 52.

It sucks that Veterans Day is on a Wednesday this year. I want to take a long weekend in November, so I guess I could take two days of plus Veterans Day. Still looking at going to Brasher Falls State Forest and camp / hunt up in the North Country mid-November. We will see. I’ve taken a lot of time off from work already at this point, I’m not sure how much more I can ask for off.

So earlier in the week I start looking at propane camp heaters and pricing them out. When I was down in West Virginia one of the hunters I was hanging out was talking about how great they are in the morning and how you can use them to blast heat into your tent or truck camper in my case. A cold morning ain’t so bad with a hot blast of heat. This year I’m increasingly serious about winter and late fall camping for hunting, trapping, and ice fishing. The hunters spoke favorably about the Mr. Heater hooked to a 20 lb BBQ grill sized propane bottle. Online reviews seems to agree. I haven’t bought yet but are looking at a refurbished model. Probably will make the jump next week.

Which of course got me looking at guns somehow. As much as I love my 20 gauge Remington 870, I would like to also get a 12 gauge. I’m thinking of trying my hand at deer hunting this year and while you can get slugs and buck shot for a 20, a 12 is more flexible and easier to get. I saw they had a Mossberg 500 deer and field combo gun (you swap out the two barrels it comes with) on sale for $300 through Saturday. Seriously thinking of buying but the sale ends Saturday. Next week the 870 is on sale but I certainly don’t want to have two nearly identically looking and operating guns that takes different size ammo. That could be dangerous. I don’t know, the gun is kind of low priority and Dick’s has sold them for less before. Been chewing it over all week. I don’t know if I really need the 12 gauge right now as the 20 can do nearly everything, but it would last for a long time and Mossberg is a good brand.

What I should really do with the money leftover from vacation is invest it in the stock market. But I think the market is overvalued but returning the money to my FDIC insured cash savings means I’m loosing to inflation every month as the low funds rate means I’m only collecting 0.95% interest. But I like guns and $300 won’t break the bank for another inexpensive shotgun. In 2016, I want to take some money from savings for a snowmobile but for various reasons not so much this year.

October 22, 2015 morning

Kind of a gray and cloudy morning, around 56 degrees. Looking at a mild day around 70 degrees with a chance of showers.

Tomorrow the sun returns with much cooler temperatures, we are looking at a high around 52 degrees. Saturday will be around 56 with clouds and sun. Rain likely for Sunday around 58. At any rate, the weekend doesn’t look like a washout.

October 20, 2015 update

Still a pretty gray morning but we have climbed a few degrees to 49. Same old Tuesday morning commute on the bus downtown.

The next two weeks I don’t have anything planned but I’m thinking of theΒ  Veterans Day Weekend heading up to the North Country to go camping and hunting. Today is payday and I will probablyΒ  retire the debt from vacation today and invest the remaining money in the stock market or my retirement account rather than put it back in savings. Veterans Day Weekend is two paychecks away.

Thinking of getting a propane camping heater before the next trip. I was talking to some of the guys down in West Virginia and they say that they are really great for using during hunting season. Campfires are nice but they can’t put a blast of heat in your tent or in my case truck. Nor can you just switch them on. On the other hand, I’d like to buy a deer rifle or maybe a 12 gauge shotgun before hunting season as the 20 gauge doesn’t have much stopping power for a deer even with a slug. I want to do more winter camping this year because I get tired of being stuck inside all of the winter season.

I sure spend a lot of time thinking about how to spend money on the way to work. But I ain’t doing it for free. So be it.

At any rate, have a great Tuesday!

October 20, 2015 morning

Today is going to be much warmer than recent, with a high around 65. Gradual clearing throughout the day but clouds will dominate tonight. Currently 44 degrees, much warmer than the 24 degrees it was at this time yesterday.

October 19, 2015 evening

Good evening. Currently 46 degrees and cloudy. Tonight won’t be as cold as last night with temperatures bottoming out well above freezing, around 37. Sunrise tomorrow at 7:12 AM. Tomorrow we get a warm up, I’m calling for 65 degrees. Going to be cloudy with a slight chance of rain, and the breeze will make it feel cooler than what the mercury suggests.

I’m tired. Off to bed in a bed not covered with Line-x.
