Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

January 1, 2016 evening

Good evening. Partly cloudy and about freezing. Hate these dark, damp days of late? It’s going to be partly sunny tomorrow and around 39 degrees. Still a bit of a breeze but not bad for January. Lake effect continues to our west. Cold weather comes for Monday and Tuesday but not unreasonable for this time of year.

Went for a walk down to the park this afternoon. Not many folks there, kind of cold, dark, and gray today. Spent some time working on various pieces of code for the blog and map making. Pretty quiet day, as I was stuck in town without a car and the library was closed. Sometimes quiet days are nice. Been listening to some podcasts this evening and making some maps.

January 1, 2016 morning

Good morning. Happy New Year on this morning of 2016. Currently 34 degrees and partly cloudy to start off your New Year. Next few days are expected to reach around 40 with more sun on Saturday and Sunday. Colder weather and sunnier comes in for Monday and Tuesday, with higher expected around 24 degrees for both days. Mild weather but cloudier returns for the second half of the week.

Today I’ll probably work on some more coding and head down to the town park. Maybe work on some things around the apartment. Still somewhat recovering from my cold. Tomorrow looks nicer, so I’m thinking I will hike out to Five Rivers Education Center in the morning.

Next weekend looks cold and snowy but we will see. My guess is my next trip will wait for Martin Luther King Jr Day Weekend but we will see. Still have plenty of 2016 left to do stuff and by April the weather gets fairly mild.

January 1, 2016 early morning

Good morning. Happy 2016. Currently 37 degrees and overcast this evening but with a chilly breeze. So the new year is upon us, although honestly many of us would like to put it behind us, so that the political silly season is behind us.

My failing truck meant that I didn’t really get to do anything special for New Years. Damn thing wouldn’t start again when I got to Sears to buy shirts and I had to get it jump started and leave it at the garage. Being the holiday weekend, I won’t see the truck back until Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully things will be back running by then again. It could have been worse, I could have been stranded in the Adirondacks without cellphone service, hoping a trooper or someone else could give me a ride. Sucks, but I don’t think we are talking about thousands in repairs. Probably a few hundred at the most. I swear cars never work properly. I haven’t been posting much lately because of my frustration and need to cuss at the world.

Went out to my parent’s house today for their annual cheese fondue. They’ve been doing it for some three decades or so. It’s delicious as ever but rough on the stomach and rear end hours later.

Been working on some new code for the blog and map making, although I’m spending a lot of time just relearning the ins and outs of object oriented coding, because I have done much coding in a long time. I have a long list of blog fixes and improvements I want to make during the winter months of 2016.

I don’t think I missed that much not camping in the Adirondacks this weekend. My tent is not a four season tent, so I would worry that if we got a lot of lake effect snow while camping it could knock down the tent. The gray skies and wind wouldn’t make camping much fun at any rate. I looked at camping locally but that wasn’t as practical as first thought. We will see when the next time I’m out in the woods camping – the snow is getting deep in many places, seasonal places are closed, and the weather may be too cold. We will see. It’s January. I do have a three day weekend off for Martin Luther King Jr Day but that tends to be a quite frigid time of the year.

December 31, 2015 morning

Good morning. Currently 40 degrees and partly sunny. Going to cloud up more for the evening, and drop down to 30 degrees. Not much lake effect snow, but it’s expected to pick up by evening, leaving 6-12 inches of snow in much of the Western Adirondacks as the new year gets underway.

December 29, 2015 night

Good evening. Currently cloudy and 34 degrees. Tomorrow will be 41 degrees and mostly cloudy. The warmer temperatures should help melt some of the slop on the sidewalks. Sunrise at 7:25 AM. Have a great night.

December 29, 2015 morning

Good morning. On this final Tuesday of 2015 it’s sleeting and around 29 degrees. The bus seems to be running on time but the untreated surfaces are somewhat slippery but not as slippery as if we had gotten freezing rain. The freezing rain will come later and transition over to rain, leaving us little slop left over.

I am still feeling a little bit sick but they are short staffed and at this point I’m mostly recovered and I need to get caught up on things at work.

A much as I hate living in the city, it sure is nice on icy days like today. I don’t have to worry about my commute and on nice weekends I can spend them out in the wilderness.

Still looking at heading up to the Adirondacks camping for New Years Eve.
This won’t require a lot of preparations. With the snow, it will likely involve tent camping, with gear dragged back into the woods. Another possibility is camping locally. I’m thinking about that too.

I am almost to work. Have a safe commute and enjoy your Tuesday.

December 28, 2015 evening

Good evening. 24 degrees and the snow has started. Snow before 5am, then snow and sleet. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Then in the morning… Snow and sleet before 10am, then rain between 10am and 1pm, then drizzle likely after 1pm. High near 38. Southeast wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. Most of the snow and ice will probably melt to a slushy mess by evening. The Adirondacks will get more snow.

Tomorrow morning may be a messy commute or it might be just rain. A lot depends on timing. My guess is it won’t be a big deal, but I could be wrong. The weekend looks good, although maybe a bit cloudy with typical temperatures for early January.

I’m still not feeling really good and everything I did today was a minor cluster but I survived my Monday and will be back at work tomorrow if all goes well. Coughing more in my apartment but it may be just because I’m lying in bed and not the mold I’ve mostly cleaned up. Going to get a good night’s sleep and see how I feel in the morning. They are really short staffed at work, so I will try to get in if possible tomorrow.

Lots of close calls today but nothing really bad happen.
Just lots of stuff to make me cranky. But I survived. Tomorrow is Tuesday and New Years will be upon us shortly. I am looking forward to welcoming New Years in the wilderness if all goes well.
