January 1, 2016 early morning

Good morning. Happy 2016. Currently 37 degrees and overcast this evening but with a chilly breeze. So the new year is upon us, although honestly many of us would like to put it behind us, so that the political silly season is behind us.

My failing truck meant that I didn’t really get to do anything special for New Years. Damn thing wouldn’t start again when I got to Sears to buy shirts and I had to get it jump started and leave it at the garage. Being the holiday weekend, I won’t see the truck back until Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully things will be back running by then again. It could have been worse, I could have been stranded in the Adirondacks without cellphone service, hoping a trooper or someone else could give me a ride. Sucks, but I don’t think we are talking about thousands in repairs. Probably a few hundred at the most. I swear cars never work properly. I haven’t been posting much lately because of my frustration and need to cuss at the world.

Went out to my parent’s house today for their annual cheese fondue. They’ve been doing it for some three decades or so. It’s delicious as ever but rough on the stomach and rear end hours later.

Been working on some new code for the blog and map making, although I’m spending a lot of time just relearning the ins and outs of object oriented coding, because I have done much coding in a long time. I have a long list of blog fixes and improvements I want to make during the winter months of 2016.

I don’t think I missed that much not camping in the Adirondacks this weekend. My tent is not a four season tent, so I would worry that if we got a lot of lake effect snow while camping it could knock down the tent. The gray skies and wind wouldn’t make camping much fun at any rate. I looked at camping locally but that wasn’t as practical as first thought. We will see when the next time I’m out in the woods camping – the snow is getting deep in many places, seasonal places are closed, and the weather may be too cold. We will see. It’s January. I do have a three day weekend off for Martin Luther King Jr Day but that tends to be a quite frigid time of the year.

  • Dear Andy, Sorry about your truck. I looked through your website last night and saw all your winter camping trips to the east branch.
Wow- Impressed. By the way, there is no snow down here in Otsego County. You just visited Basswood- I had previously spoke to the ranger about the pit privy, and he had asked several times this year for facilities to clean it up. I saw it too, earlier in December- I got permission from the ranger to tidy it up.

Winter Tent? If you are interested, I just got this “fortress tent” from ebay: there are a few left:

It has a enormous vestibule on it. I’m hoping to use it in March/April when it is still cold and wet, in conjunction with my eureka timberline tent, which sleeps really warm.

Could you, at some time, show us how you do your tent “heating rig” for off season camping? I am curious what you do. Thanks. Teresa
