Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good morning! Today is Make Your Dreams Come True Day. It is currently mostly sunny and 22 degrees in Delmar. Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 23. Breezy, with a northwest wind 17 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. There are currently 300 days until Election Day when the political silly season comes to an end. I know a lot of people will be looking forward to Election Day coming and going. Partisans had a lot of fun spinning the president’s speech.
This day in 1966, Robert C. Weaver becomes the first African American Cabinet member when he is appointed United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development by Lyndon Johnson. He would be proceeded by Nixon appointee George Romney in 1969. Robert J. Wood was an interim replacement for about a month between the two. Funny to think our first black president is wrapping up his final year in office, while it was only fifty years ago that we had our first black cabinet member.
On this Make Your Dreams Come True Day, what are you doing towards that purpose? I suspect that buying a lottery ticket will not get you closer to your dreams but saving money and developing a plan for a better tomorrow will. I’m a bit short on plans for the short term but I want to eventually get away from the big city.
Good evening. Currently light snow is coming down and 27 degrees in Delmar. Heavier band of snow is coming, roads could be slick around 11 pm.
Tonight will be snow showers before 10pm, then snow likely, mainly between 10pm and 1am. A heavy band of snow is in the Heldebergs right now. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 21. Breezy, with a west wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
Waxing crescent moon has already set but it was pretty earlier. Stars are mostly blocked by clouds and snow showers. Another dark morning on tap tomorrow. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:23 am with first light at 6:52 am, which is one minute and 24 seconds earlier then today.
Continuing to work on fire tower maps. I have several done and will be posted later in the week. They aren’t perfect but they do give a lot of insight on what you are looking at from the summit of mountains.
Didn’t go to the library but I went for my evening walk. Seemed like a lot of police activity going on around the school. Not sure what was happening, maybe a security alarm went off. They’re so paranoid about security at schools these days.
Listening to President Obama’s last state of the union. While I haven’t agreed with all his policy proposals, especially those urban, socially liberal policies, he’s done a lot of good. Being the first African American president, he has broke down many barriers. We might next see the first woman president. I voted for Obama twice. He didnβt get a big energy and environment bill passed like Bush, but Obamacare helped ensure a lot more Americans had access to health care. It doesn’t seem important until your sprain your ankle. He does make a good point about how divided our country has become.
Good morning! Happy Tuesday. It is currently overcast and 22 degrees in Delmar. Today will snow, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 31. South wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. Sunset will be at 4:44 pm with twilight at 5:15 pm which is one minute and 7 seconds later then yesterday. The clouds will make it seem like sunset is earlier then in reality.
There are 8 days until Penguin Awareness Day. This year with the relatively mild weather the penguins can’t be that happy, although locally there aren’t that many penguins. Also on this day in 1991, Congress authorizes the use of military force to drive Iraq out of Kuwait (Gulf War). Worth noting.
Kind of a gray morning. It’s hard getting up in the darkness this time of year. The sun didn’t rise until 7:23 and was darker later then that with the clouds. Baked some muffins for breakfast and they were pretty good.
Starting to make some better maps with viewshed analysis but it taking to figure out the ins and outs of the plug-in. Depending when I get out of work tonight I might do some more work on it.
Good evening. Currently clear and 18 degrees in Delmar. A bit chilly but it’s January, normally the coldest part of the year. Beautiful stars on this very clear evening. All day has been quite clear and nice at least for scenic views if you don’t mind the cold.
Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 14. West wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Waxing crescent moon has already set. Around 9 PM that very slender moon was very pretty as it was setting.
Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:23 am with first light at 6:52 am, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier then today.
Been studying visibility analysis and how to make good maps from the peaks of mountains that shade out features not visible from the firetower or overlook. I’m kind of figuring out the QGIS visibility plug-in but it’s still new to me. As visibility / peak maps are a much larger scale then hiking and camping maps, like I usually make up, they require a lot less detail and things scaled differently which is a totally different effort from the ground up. Eventually I’ll get a template I like. I started working on a Stillwater Firetower map but switched to Wakely Mountain as I know the area better and are able to better gauge the accuracy of the visibility maps as I learn the settings. The first maps may be posted by this weekend if I can make a satisfactory product.
Other than that, I walked down to the library for a bit and then went for my evening walk. Nothing too exciting. Had fish sticks and sweet potato fries and veggies for dinner and a few beers. All and all a decent Monday. Tomorrow evening I get paid which is nice, as I can retire some credit card debt from the rather costly past month. Oh, well. You got to live and that costs money.
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again.Β Snow flurries Β currently coming down and 25 degrees in Delmar. The snow flurries make the gray and dark skies seem less depressing, and to the north there is some sun. Normans Kill is raging after yesterday’s rain.
Today will have a slight chance of snow showers before 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 29. West wind 14 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20% .Sunset will be at 4:42 pm with twilight at 5:14 pm which is one minute and 6 seconds later then yesterday.
There are 7 days until Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Depending on which model you look at we may have a snowstorm that day. Regardless, the weekend looks frigid but that’s to be expected this time of year. It’s winter after all.
This day in 1960, Henry Lee Lucas, once known as America’s most prolific serial killer, commits his first known murder. Some cheery history news to start out your Monday. At least it shows that crazy murders aren’t a new thing in America. Kind of a dark way to start the this day in history part of the blog, and indeed it wasn’t intentional. I had written the feature last week but today was when it came live on the server. Also, I brought back the countdowns and automated weather templates to save some cutting and pasting and switching between apps on my phone.
Spilled my dinner I packed all over the bag that contains, leaking pasta sauce a little over everywhere, including one overcoat. I’ll clean it off when I get to work and will have to drop it off at the dry cleaner on Thursday. So be it. I will have to be careful carrying it the rest of the way into work. I’ll clean the mess up at work.
Other than that, it’s a Monday. I caught the bus on time, so I can’t complain that much. Have a great Monday and have better luck then me.
Good evening. Currently mostly cloudy and fairly breezy and 39 degrees in Delmar. At times though you can see the stars, although maybe the have been crowded out by the clouds.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. West wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. The wind and dampness will make it feel chilly.
It’s pretty dark our there. Β Waxing crescent moon has already set.Β Mornings also continue to be fairly dark, although slowly but surely the sun rise is happening earlier. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:24 am with first light at 6:52 am, which is one minute and 19 seconds earlier then today. Still going to need that alarm clock come morning.
Went out to Mom and Dad’s for Sunday dinner. Mom still makes good lasagna. Certainly much better than I could ever make and certainly better than any restaurant. She’s a pretty amazing cook. I made chocolate brownies topped with M&Ms. I also did my wash out there. Nice fresh sheets in bed. Got home went for my evening walk. Nice evening for a walk. Folded my clothes, made my bed. Took a sleeping pill and now I’m in bed. Pretty tired now.
I hope you had a good weekend. Kind of went by quickly, but so be it. Sleep well!
Good morning! Happy Sunday. It is currently a wet start to our morning with times of heavy rain and some fog/mist with temperatures around 39 degrees. Kind of wet out there for sure, I can hear the rain pounding on the roof.
Today will have rain and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 5pm, then a chance of rain and thunderstorms after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 56. Southeast wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. So pretty wet.
Sunset will be at 4:41 pm with twilight at 5:13 pm which is one minute and 5 seconds later then yesterday. Before you know it, sunset will be after 5 PM and we’ll have some sun in the evenings.
There are 1 month, 5 days until It’s Presidents Day. It will be here before you know it. I hope to take a long weekend and maybe a few days added on to go winter camping and ice fishing at Balsam Pond in Chenango County. It would be nice to get out of town for a few days.
Been researching making concentric circles and viewshed analysis in QGIS because I want to start making maps that show what one can see from a top of a mountain or firetower. Maps of a region are great but it would be nice to hide or at least mark peaks and lakes that are invisible to the viewer. Fortunately, they make QGIS plug-ins that make such things easy to do. I got to get down to the library to download those plug-ins at noontime today.
