Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

January 18, 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon. Currently a few clouds and breezy and 24 degrees in Delmar. This afternoon will continue to have occasional snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Breezy, with a west wind around 22 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Sunset will be at 4:51 pm with twilight at 5:21 pm which is one minute and 13 seconds later then yesterday. A week from today will have the first sunset after 5 pm.

Tonight we will have a waxing gibbous moon, setting at 2:20 am. Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13. Wind chill values as low as -2. West wind 15 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Been Unpacking the camping gear, doing some work on the blog. Working on my public comment on the state’s proposed ban on roadside camping in the Adirondacks and generally cussing out state leaders. Just generally hanging out as I’ve been feeling a little under the weather and have been tired. The weather looks kind of cold and miserable outside.

I’m kind of glad I came back yesterday. It’s possible the snow would have been minor but it still would have been cold and the night would have been really long. I like camping but the long nights are really for the dogs. Lanterns are fine and campfires are nice but after five hours by the fire it gets so long. Not to mention heading to bed at 9 PM and darkness when you awake at 7 AM. I like getting away to the woods but it still ain’t fun.

Big Red has been running great all weekend but it seems like all that road salt is gross and it’s making it hard to see out the windows when driving. I’m going to wash the truck in a bit.

The bits and pieces I’ve heard about the Democratic Party debate last night hardly inspired confidence in either candidate or inspired me to go out and vote Democratic this year, at least on the presidential line. We don’t need more wilderness areas or gun control. Public lands should be available to use by the public and not locked up as fee use parks. I would like to see more investment in infrastructure, more renewable energy efforts, and increased energy efficiency. Action on Climate Change is important to and the ignorance of the leading GOP candidates is obnoxious. Taxes on working folk are too high. I’ll have to learn more about the different candidates and maybe there is one I’ll like. I don’t know. Change would be good, I feel like we need fresh ideas in our country. One party shouldn’t rule forever. Competitive elections encourage better ideas to float to the top.

Too much of politics at least in the political news cycle and social media is about penis length measuring of the candidates and parties rather than real policy. It doesn’t matter if the other party’s candidate has a shorter penis. They have valid ideas too. People are too ignorant of what real state and federal agencies are doing to hardworking people just trying to feed their families.

January 17, 2015 Afternoon

Good afternoon. Currently overcast and 33 degrees in Delmar. This afternoon will have a slight chance of snow showers after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Light south wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunset will be at 4:49 pm with twilight at 5:20 pm which is one minute and 12 seconds later then yesterday.

Tonight we will have a waxing gibbous moon, setting at 1:21 am. Tonight will have snow showers likely, mainly between midnight and 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 19. Light and variable wind becoming west 9 to 14 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

I decided to come back home from the Adirondacks tonight rather than tomorrow. I heard that up north they could get 3-6 inches of lake effect snow tonight, and I was worried that the tent would likely collapse with the weight of snow. While the morning was nice, this afternoon was pretty gray, cloudy and only about 20 degrees up north. I was also concerned with the low temperatures impeding snow removal tomorrow morning in the Adirondacks.

It was a pretty nice morning to start out the day although a bit chilly. Clouded up midday and after hearing the Winter Weather Advisory, I decided to tear down camp. I was originally planning on going to Warrensburg to charge up the battery to be safe and buy firewood and a small propane canister, so I could run both the lantern and the heater.

The nights sure are long this time of year but actually somewhat shorter than a month ago.
Still darkness by 5:15 or so means a lot of camping after dark. Dinner is cooked after dark and by 9 PM I’m plenty ready for bed.

Not a ton of snow up here. About 4 inches of ice, topped by 4-5 inches of snow that I scrapped off in the campsite. I pitched the tent on a tarp above the cleaned off ice. Didn’t have any problems with moisture or wetness in the tent, the heater helped to evaporate any dampness. I parked out by the road to be safe and avoid the risk of getting stuck but I probably could have driven on back if I wanted to.

Last night was fairly dark with mostly just candlelight because I discovered that I could only run either the heater or the propane tank off of the tank when it was below freezing, as the propane lines were freezing up and not enough pressure to run either appliance at the same time. The lines, even when one appliance was on produced insufficient pressure for proper operation. It’s possible that the splitter has just froze up, but I think today when I’m in town I’ll buy a small bottle of propane to run the lantern. I have the white gas lantern but it needs fresh mantels and I good cleaning. Hopefully it will have enough pressure to work in the cold. Last night it was a pain switching the propane lines between the lantern and the heater, especially because in the cold the propane kind of made an icy, slushy mix on the fittings as the remaining propane on the lines expanded as connectors were removed. Liquid petroleum gas when chilled is kind of a substance like gasoline.

I left the step stool home so I had trouble getting the tarp up high enough.
I figured though that the lower tarp would keep in the heat. Hated banging my head into it. At times the wind was whipping around enough that eventually a grommet ripped out the tarp and the tarp went flying. By 8 o’clock any remaining rain had already become snow and sleet.

It was plenty warm in the tent. I turned the heat on occasionally through the night but under the covers it was plenty warm and snug. Mostly turned on the heat when I opened the tent to take a piss through the night. Although I woke up from time to time, it was a good long night’s sleep. Listened to podcasts throughout the night. Those USB batteries work pretty good, swapping them out as they run down.

Weekends rarely go entirely to plan. All the preparations in the world don’t always mean everything goes perfectly. It was pretty in the Adirondacks but it sucked that the lantern wasn’t working and I was too far from my truck to run electric lights. This time of year the nights are still so long. But fortunately, no major disasters occurred, and despite cutting the trip short, I’ll call this weekend a success.

Clean Off Your Desk Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently overcast and 31 degrees in Delmar. Without the wind and with my comfortable sweater, it doesn’t feel all that cold.

Tonight will have periods of freezing rain before 3am, then periods of rain. Gradual warming through the night. Rain stops during early to mid morning. Light northeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Not a lot of ice predicted. Rain by mid-morning then just cloudy with clearing late.

Earlier tonight you could occasionally see the first quarter moon. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:21 am with first light at 6:50 am, which is one minute and 30 seconds earlier then today.

Been packing and shopping for winter camping tonight. I do need to buy some food and a few supplies for tomorrow including batteries for the carbon monoxide detector. For safety in the colder weather demanding more heat and the greater chance of tent vents getting blocked by snow, I’m keeping my CO detector in the tent. The Big Buddy Heater doesn’t output CO under normal circumstances and it has a low oxygen shutoff but things can malfunction and I don’t want to die if I can avoid it.

I’ve been planning this trip for months. Probably the most difficult part will be digging out a parking spot . If I have to, I’ll camp near one of the plowed parking areas along with road. Those snowbanks can be hard to shovel through based on past experience winter camping up there in December. I will also have to shovel out the campsite – especially around where I pitch the tent, the fireplace and place for the table but even with the estimated foot of snow it should be manageable. Once I get set up I’ll have all weekend to dig snow.

I have a small $17 plastic child’s sled I bought to drag gear back to the site, especially the 20 lb propane tank which actually weights about 35 lb when mostly full and the bulky propane heater and relatively more compact lantern, tent, and tarps. I also am going to buy firewood that has to be dragged back. I also bought two more USB batteries that I will use to keep my phone and Bluetooth speaker charged. I already have one, I’ll rotate them out to the truck, charging off the accessory battery so I have music and radio throughout the weekend. I wanted to charge the phone off the propane tank but I couldn’t find any affordable and reliable piezoelectric or similar device to turn propane into charging power for the phone.

I’m not planning on getting an early start in the morning, as I want to leave after the roads are totally cleared up, but I do need to get some sleep.

I hope you had a good Friday. Sleep well!

Clean Off Your Desk Day 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Friday. It’s Clean Off Your Desk Day. It is currently overcast and 28 degrees in Delmar. Not the nicest morning but it is expected to get nicer as the day progresses.

Later it will be partly sunny, with a high near 42.
Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the morning. Sunset will be at 4:47 pm with twilight at 5:18 pm which is one minute and 11 seconds later then yesterday. It’s nice that we are picking up a minute or so of daylight every evening.

These dark and dreary mornings are tough and lately I’ve been in a fog at work. I bought some dark French Roast Coffee and put in three scoops for six cups of coffee. That gave me a much needed jolt of caffeine. I look forward to sunrises before 6:30 or so.

Today is Clean Your Desk Off Day. Not a bad idea, because I don’t know about your desk but my desk always gets pretty covered with papers and miscellaneous junk as the week progresses. Organization makes Mondays go by much smoother. Do you want to come back after a long holiday weekend to a messy desk?

There are 3 months, 10 days until Arbor Day. Arbor Day is April 22nd. Depending on how early spring comes, things may start to green up a bit in the city. Every year is a bit different but I’m recent years except last, spring has been coming earlier then in the past.

A few notable things happened on this day in recent history. This day in 2001, Wikipedia, a free Wiki content encyclopedia, goes online. It’s hard to imagine the Internet without Wikipedia. Also this day in 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 makes an emergency landing in the Hudson River shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York, New York. All passengers and crew members survive. I remember that day well. It was the first day I got on Twitter or shortly thereafter when people were posting pictures of wreck on the new social media service

Orthodox New Year 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently we have a brief snow shower coming through and 29 degrees in Delmar. Warm enough this evening I saw a kid and running outdoors on the sidewalk with nothing but gym shorts. Then again, when you run like that you must burn a lot of calories. But even for me on the evening walk, I needed no more than my Carhartt vest unzipped and a sweater. No breeze this evening makes it feel a lot warmer than recent nights.

Tonight will have occasional isolated snow showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation, most likely snow showers, is 20%.

Earlier this evening we had a rather pretty waxing crescent moon which was quite pretty but now has set. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:22 am with first light at 6:51 am, which is one minute and 28 seconds earlier then today. It certainly is a good thing the days are getting longer as these dark mornings are darn hard to wake up to.

Went down to the library and wasted some time on the Internet. Downloaded some updated GIS data from data.ny.gov website . Read a few articles but mostly killed time on Facebook as I’m fried from work today.

Tomorrow I’ll probably go to the store and go shopping for this weekend camping. Not perfect weather for winter camping in the Adirondacks but it will be decent. If the weather doesn’t work out or it gets too cold, I’ll just come home. I’ll be tent camping and will have to carry my gear back to the site, by fortunately where I plan to camp, the sites are all close to a state road that is regularly plowed and sanded all winter long.

I hope you had a good Thursday. Sleep well! Friday and the weekend are rapidly approaching.

Orthodox New Year 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Orthodox New Year! Currently mostly cloudy and 20 degrees in Delmar. Today will have a slight chance of snow before 9am, then a chance of flurries after 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. Light and variable wind becoming west around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.Sunset will be at 4:46 pm with twilight at 5:17 pm which is one minute and 9 seconds later then yesterday.

There are 1 month, 1 day until It’s Presidents Day. Every day we get closer to spring time. This day in 1969, An accidental explosion aboard the USS Enterprise near Hawaii kills 27 people.

Dropped off my jacket and overcoat at the dry cleaner to get cleaned. Apparently they are open on Martin Luther King Day, so I can pick it up after I return from camping. Also bought more coffee from Hannaford. Most of the way to work today.

While it’s an early start this morning, I expect today will be a lot less crazy at work today. The day should go by quickly. And then the weekend should be upon us before you know it.

Make Your Dreams Come True Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently cloudy and 13 degrees in Delmar. A bit chilly tonight on the evening walk but if you keep moving, it’s not that bad. No wind makes the temperature fairly bearable.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 10. South wind around 6 mph. Waxing crescent moon has already set. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:22 am with first light at 6:51 am, which is one minute and 26 seconds earlier then today.

33 degrees tomorrow with clouds. Typical for this time of year about nine degrees warmer than today .

Evening walk was nice but cool. Tomorrow is Thursday, I got to get up a bit early to drop my sport coat and overcoat to the dry cleaner. Boss also wants me in early as things need to get done first thing in the morning.

Based on the latest forecast I’m pretty sure I’m heading up to the Adirondacks for the weekend. Looks like it will be decently warm for the weekend although Martin Luther King Day will be cold. Probably do some hiking / snowshoeing while I’m up there and just enjoying the wilderness in the winter.

I hope you had a good Make Your Dreams Come True Day. Did you take any steps towards making your dreams a reality? At any rate, pleasant dreams tonight !
