Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

February 16, 2016 Update

Good morning, again! I hope your commute is going well. At this point we are at 28 degrees with light freezing drizzle. We had a pause I’m the rain but now it’s picking up again. NOAA’s latest models show a slightly lower high this afternoon, they’re now saying look for around 50. Breezy, with a southeast wind 8 to 13 mph becoming south 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Heavier rain in the afternoon and warmer temperatures is expected to melt away most of the snow. It could cause localized flooding with the frozen ground.

Sunset will be at 5:28 pm with twilight at 5:57 pm which is one minute and 17 seconds later then yesterday. Tonight will be rain showers likely, possibly mixing with snow after 10pm, then gradually ending. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. Northwest wind 7 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

There are 3 months, 25 days until Flag Day. Always nice to enjoy those summer days in June.

Happy Birthday to the late Kim Jong-il, leader of the axis of evil, North Korea. Talk about a strange authoritarian society. I know I often are fascinated by seeing pictures of North Korea which is so different from the rest of the world.

Looking in the history books we can find out about other despots like Fidel Castro who became Premier of Cubaย on this day in 1959, after dictatorย Fulgencio Batistaย was overthrown onย January 1 of that year. They keep those old yank tanks running in Cuba to this day, although finally the embargo is slowly but surely coming to an end.

My sinuses are pretty plugged today. I took some cold medicine, which is helping a bit on this cold and snowy day. At least it will warm up later.

Presidents Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently light icy snow and 20 degrees in Delmar. The plows are out now, but I can tell you from walking home from the library, the roads are slick and cars are skidding all over the road. The sidewalks aren’t terrible but the road surface even on one’s feet are slick due to the action of the cold icy snow being ground down to ice by passing motorists.

As the evening progresses into night the roads are only expected to get slicker. Tonight will have snow and sleet before 3am, then freezing rain and sleet between 3am and 4am, then freezing rain after 4am. Temperature rising to around 33 by 5am. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

If you could see the moon through the clouds, we would have a first quarter moon, setting at 12:27 am. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:50 am with first light at 6:21 am, which is 1 minute and 25 seconds earlier then today.

By morning we will for the most part have rain. Warm day ahead after the frigid weekend with highs expected near 53. South wind 8 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Wet but not a real soaker for sure. Cooler but clearer weather for the second half of the week and a wet and warm weekend on tap, a bit more like Coors Light then a good beer of a weekend.

Spent a lot of time cleaning and picking things up this morning around the apartment. Cleaned up the closet, washed the bathroom floor, vacuumed, cleaned and oiled guns, caught up on dishes. Went to the library, researched Digital TV tuners some more. Went grocery shopping, put a trash bag in my truck full of ripped clothing and paper to take to the recycling center. Things are a lot cleaner and neater.

Got my clothes out for tomorrow, made lunch, and got the coffee pot ready for tomorrow. I’m tired but ready for the work week.

I hope you had a good Presidents Day. Sleep well!

Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Sunset will be at 5:27 pm with twilight at 5:56 pm which is one minute and 18 seconds later then yesterday.

Tonight will have snow before midnight, then snow and sleet between midnight and 1am, then freezing rain after 1am. Temperature rising to around 32 by 5am. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New ice accumulation of around a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. By morning commutes may be salt covered but mostly rainy and very wet. Mercury may reach the mid 50 by the afternoon.

Today in 1946, ENIAC, the first electronic general-purpose computer, is formally dedicated at theย University of Pennsylvaniaย in Philadelphia. Also in 2000, Indian Point IIย nuclear power plant vents a small amount of radioactive steam when a steam generator fails.

Happy Birthday to the late James Schlesinger, secretary of defense during the Dick Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter administrations in the 1970s.

There are 3 months, 22 days until Best Friends Day.

February 14, 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently fair and one below in Delmar. The lack of wind makes the cold more bearable.

Tonight will be clear, with a low around -9. Calm wind. First quarter moon, setting at 11:33 pm. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:51 am with first light at 6:22 am, which is 2 minutes and 24 seconds earlier then today.

Presidents Day will have a chance of snow, mainly after 3pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 26. Wind chill values as low as -8. Light southeast wind becoming south 9 to 14 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Today was a cold day but I didn’t notice it much as I was either in my truck or in buildings all day.
I went to the Adirondacks Outdoors Expo in Johnstown this morning. It was a nice little outdoors show, about what I expected at the fairly large Moose Lodge in Johnstown. It was pretty packed and had a lot of different booths. I looked at buying some traps and some books but held off. I was a bit disappointed that the DEC didn’t have a booth. Their office is just up the road in Northville. Then I went to John Wolcott’s House to look at some maps. He gave me several of his old DOT survey maps of the Albany Pine Bush. Most are large format, State Plane maps, all in feet scale from the late 1960s. Probably not much not available this day of age via free GIS data and software, but still nice to have. Then it was out to mom and dad’s house for Sunday dinner. Nice day even if it was a cold one.

I’ve not noticed a lot of difficulties from the cold, despite the hype. Compared to most winters, this one hasn’t been exceptionally cold. Even today wasn’t that bad. The hot water faucet was exceptionally cold when I first turned on this morning. But eventually hot water came out. The gas heat fell behind a bit but when I got up in the morning, I turned on the upstairs baseboard electric heat which quickly brought things to a comfortable temperature.

The truck kind of rumbled when I first turned the key from a lack of lubrication in the cold but the fresh battery started it right up and it idled smoothly. I let it warm up for 2-3 minutes but it still was a bit sluggish and the steering wheel and shifter seemed a bit hard until it warmed up. I890 was rough the other side of Schenectady due to frost contractions of the concrete panels. All and all the cold was not a big deal at least for me.

It sounds like there is a fire somewhere in town based on the noise of fire trucks going by. It’s funny how colder weather than people are used to catches them off guard and pipes freeze and the alike. People don’t have proper insulation and undersized heating systems for the cold. Today is mild by Minnesota standards. Remember there are dairymen who milk cows at 4 in the morning in 40 below weather in Minnesota. They dress warmly and ruminating cows put off a lot of heat in the barn I guess.

Still thinking about getting a digital TV tuner to use with my monitor. But I discovered another hitch – I don’t know for sure if my monitor can decode HDCP encoded programs. A Google search suggests yes, but I need to download the manual and review carefully in the morning. I also wonder if the tuners will allow me to use the HDMI output for video and analog output for sound at the same time. Maybe it’s not worth all the time and research. I don’t really know if I want to have live TV in my home.

I hope you had a good day and stayed warm. I hope you had a good Valentines Day. Sleep well!

February 14, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Valentine’s Day this very cold and sunny morning. It is currently sunny and negative 13 degrees in Delmar. With the wind chill this morning, it feels like negative 30. That said, wind chill is not very accurate when it’s this cold out.

Today will be sunny and cold, with a high near 6. Wind chill values as low as -31. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Sunset will be at 5:26 pm with twilight at 5:54 pm which is one minute and 18 seconds later then yesterday.

Not quite as cold tonight. It will be mostly clear, with a low around -5. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Happy Birthday to Terry Gross of NPR’s Fresh Air Interview Program. She turns 65 today and has done countless fascinating interviews over the years.

This day in 2005, the popular YouTube website is launched making it easy for people to share and watch video. It’s hard to believe it wasn’t always around.

Have a great Valentine’s Day! Stay warm.

February 13, 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently a few clouds and negative six degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around -10. Wind chill values as low as -28. Northwest wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Pretty darn cold.

Waxing crescent moon, setting at 10:38 pm. Best enjoyed from indoors. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:52 am with first light at 6:24 am, which is 1 minute and 20 seconds earlier then today.

Sunday will be sunny and continued cold, with a high near 8. Wind chill values as low as -29. Northwest wind around 10 mph. Warmer weather but some snow and rain on Tuesday. Next weekend could be quite warm and rainy.

I plan to get a fairly early start tomorrow, so I can check out the Adirondack Outdoorsman Show. I have no reason to procrastinate. The morning is expected to start out below zero, but my truck is starting and running good in the cold.

The bathroom sink is unplugged and working well. Stupid shit like that can be a pain in the neck. I bought a hair stopper filter to put over the drain to avoid it plugging in the future. As noted previously, I got my flu shot and my truck is running well. I still can’t believe how easy it is to get your flu shot. Free too under Obamacare. Stupid not to do it.

I’ve been working on some miscellaneous coding projects this afternoon. Nothing too major. I thought about going out this evening to look at Digital TV tuners some more, because I noticed almost all of them now have HDMI outputs. Still undecided if I want to have TV at home, but on cold nights it might be entertaining at least for PBS.

I hope you had a good day. Sleep well!

February 13, 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon. Currently mostly cloudy and windy and 5 degrees in Delmar. This afternoon will be mostly sunny, with a high near 14. Wind chill values as low as -22. Blustery, with a northwest wind 23 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. In others cold, but if you are adequately dressed and going from building to building, it’s not that cold.

Sunset will be at 5:24 pm with twilight at 5:53 pm which is one minute and 19 seconds later then yesterday. Tonight we have a Waxing Cresent Moon with 39% illuminated. It will set at 10:38 pm. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around -10. Wind chill values as low as -31. Blustery, with a northwest wind 14 to 21 mph. Continued cold. The mercury can drop somewhat lower at times in Albany, but not much colder then this with the wind

In four weeks on March 12 the sun will be setting at 5:59 pm, which is 34 minutes later then today. There are 41ย days until Good Friday. when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm. It doesn’t seem like Good Friday is that far away, but we still have some frigid days expected before then.

Making progress on a bunch of things today. Picked up some drain-cleaning solvent to hopefully free up the bathroom drain. I poured it in and it seemed to be draining a little bit better, but the label said give it a few hours to dissolve the mess. As I believe it’s just soap and hair, hopefully it will be good by later. I may add more drain-cleaning solvent later and hold off using the sink until I feel fairly certain the clog is gone. I also bought a hair-stopper cover, so hopefully things will be good.

Got my flu shot.ย I have never gotten a flu shot before, but it was a painless process. I didn’t even have to show my insurance card or give a credit card. They just pulled my information up from the system after giving them my date of birth and name. It took only 10 minutes at CVS, and the shot wasn’t at all painful. My right arm feels a little tingly in a spot now, but the shot didn’t hurt at all. I barely even felt it. I’ve never gotten a flu shot before, but it was such a quick and easy process, I’m going to make sure to do it again the in the future. Last year, one of my co-workers got the flu, and it’s not just a cold. It’s two weeks of feeling likeย you want to take your own life because of the agony, or so I’ve been told.

Checked the oil in my truck, and it was exactly where it was last week.ย If I’m burning or leaking oil, it certainly isn’t major thing. I thought I saw some oil dripping the other day after the oil change, but that was just oil I must have spilled a bit. I feel better knowing I won’t have to make any major repairs to the engine in the next few weeks. I don’t know why I thought it was a problem, except for noticing the oil was low three weeks ago before I added some and did an oil change. But at any rate, I’m now carefully logging my oil levels and checking it every week or two, to make sure there isn’t an issue going forward.

I was going to go up to the Adirondack Outdoorsman Show today,ย but I got a late start today, and figured I’d be better off seeing the exhibits when they are freshly set up in the morning on Sunday. I have a lot planned for Sunday, but if I get an early start I can get everything done in a prompt manor..
