Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

March 29, 2016 Night

Definitely warmed up this evening when the wind died down. 37 degrees now with a west – northwest breeze at 13 mph or less. Lots of stars up above on this clear early spring night. Going to drop to 26 degrees by daybreak, which is 6 degrees below normal but far above that cold night in 1946 when it got down to zero. The last quarter moon will be rising around midnight.

Tomorrow, 56 degrees and pleasant. Increasing clouds in the afternoon, not so windy. Sunrise in about eight and a half hours at 6:39 AM with first light around 6:10. Should be a nice day, consider eating your lunch outside tomorrow.

11 weeks from now is Flag Day, this year falling on a Tuesday, June 14th. The average high is 78 degrees. Dreaming of those warm summer days for sure….

Started playing with the CDTA real time bus info API. I have some interesting ideas for coding projects. I also went down to the library for a while then out for my evening walk. Bought some milk at Stewart’s, watched most of the PBS Newshour and now I’m in bed, ready for a good night’s sleep. Sleep well.

As Phil Ochs once sung, “Tomorrow will bring happiness or at least another day.”

March 29, 2016 Update

As we head into the 9 o’clock hour, we are seeing more sun peaking out from the clouds but we are still at 37 degrees with the wind whipping around. About 1 pm the skies will be partly clear and 42 degrees and by time we get out of work at 5 pm and he skies will be mostly clear and 44 degrees. Expect a sustained wind of 22Β mph with gusts up to 44 mph, which is good for the wind turbines but will make for a kind of cold day.

Today is Tuesday but it still is one more day closer to the weekend. I’m going to stay in town on what promises to be a frigid weekend but may go trout fishing in the Catskill Creek one of the days during the weekend. I also want to clean out the fridge, and take a bunch of bottles and cans to the transfer station. I also want to fix the wiring in the truck cap and finish organizing my camping gear.

Today in 1973, the United States starts withdrawing from Vietnam pursuant to the Paris Peace agreement signed in January of 73. Also in 1929, Herbert Hoover has installed the first phone in the Oval Office.

March 29, 2016 Morning

Just be glad you don’t need an umbrella this morning as the wind is whipping around on this Tuesday morning. Wind gusts up to 43 mph. The wind is roaring. Mostly cloudy this morning and 37 degrees. Feels cold with the wind. Later today will be mostly sunny and 44 degrees but breezy which is about six degrees below normal. Transit of the sun at 12:59 this afternoon and sunset at 7:19 pm.

We may be in the second gear of the week but you know it is passing gear and so well be up to speed on the weekend before you know it.

March 28, 2016 Night

Good evening folks. 41 degrees and blustery with on and off showers this evening. A 24 mph wind this evening with his gusts up to 44 mph. Hold on to your steering wheel when venturing out tonight. 36 degrees for a low.

11 hours and 22 minutes of darkness tonight with a sunrise at 6:39 AM and twilight at 6:11. It’s almost like there wasn’t a time change with all of the increase in daylight in the morning. Breezy conditions continue tomorrow and there will be lots of clouds to start out the day with increasing clearness by late. With the breeze tomorrow it will feel quite cold for late March, and the high at 45 degrees is about five degrees below normal. Wednesday will make up for it, with temperatures around 56 degrees and plenty of sun and just a modest breeze.

I hope you had a good Monday!

March 25, 2016 Morning

Good morning on this Good Friday, long considered one of the most holy of Christian holidays. It is 49 degrees and cloudy. At least one more line of showers I’d coming, that will briefly bring heavy rain We will continue to have showers through the morning.

62 degrees and some clearing in late evening, then temperatures will drop with a stiff frigid breeze with near seasonable temperatures in late March, low of 32 in the city. The wind at around 10 mph will make it feel cooler.

I am shortly going to start packing my pack. As I’m hauling everything back in the woods, things have to be fairly well organized to minimize the number of trips but provide the gear I need. I need sufficient gear to stay warm tonight, as it’s expected to be cold tonight.

Today in 1911 was the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in NYC which killed 145 workers when a dust rich environment combined with blocked exits made it impossible for workers to escape the inferno that ripped through the building. More recently in 1967, Martin Luther King leads a march to protest the Vietnam War.

Sunset tonight is at 7:14 pm and darkness is at 7:49 pm. So I better get going as its after 9 AM and I’m burning daylight. Once the front passes by and the rain is gone, it should be a nice weekend, even if this evening is expected to be quite chilly.

Enjoy your Good Friday!

March 24, 2016 Update

How is your morning going? Mine fairly well, although I was running a few minutes late, so my walk down to the Park and Ride was more of a sprint then a walk. We are now up to 34 degrees as we head up to 53 degrees around 4 or 5 pm. That’s 5 degrees above average. Still cloudy out this morning and the breeze is more northerly than motherly as my earlier post suggested. Auto correct.

Transit of the sun is at 1:01 pm again today and sunset is at 7:13 pm. 12 hours and 23 minutes of daylight. Waning Gibbons Moon, 96% illuminated, rising around 8:30 pm in the southeast. I don’t know how much we will see of the moon with clouds and rain showers expected this evening. But very mild, around 47.

Today in 1989, the Exxom Valdez ran aground in Alaska, setting off one of the worse oil spills in history, permanently coating vast sections of the Alaska wilderness. They spent billions cleaning it up but the disaster continues to impact the ecosystem and haunt people about the dangers of oil extraction and transportation.

Happy Birthday to the late Governor Thomas Dewey, the organized crime fighting prosecutor who went on to be governor until his retirement in 1954. He is most remembered for the NYS Thruway, which is names after him and was a priority of his administration. He also created what would become SUNY under Governor Nelson Rockefeller.

March 24, 2016 Morning

Good morning. Another cloudy and dark start to a day. 33 degrees with a light northerly breeze. 30% chance of rain showers this morning then mostly cloudy this afternoon. 53 degrees for the high. Then rain comes for the evening with a low around 47. Rain for the first half of Good Friday then gradual clearing.

You can’t control the weather but you can control your attitude towards it.
