Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

March 23, 2016 Night

Good evening. It’s bedtime for me once this note is done. 37 degrees and cloudy, no view of the Worm Moon tonight. We may drop another degree before morning but expect near constant temperatures for most of the night. There is a 30% chance of rain showers tonight and tomorrow. 11 hours and 36 hours of darkness tonight.

Sunrise tomorrow at 6:49 AM with the first light of morning at 6:20.
Going to be another cloudy and gray day with only a slight chance of showers and a high around 53 degrees.

In two weeks the average low for Albany is 34 degrees, which means that a typical night in Albany will be above freezing. Granted we are already at that point, with the past few nights being 5-10 degrees above normal.

Went for my evening walk. Also went down to the library for a bit. Watched the PBS Newshour while working on some code. A pretty typical evening. Looking forward to camping this weekend. But first I must get some sleep.

Good night. Sleep well. Morning is rapidly approaching…

March 23, 2016 Update

As we head into the 9 o’clock hour, we are continuing to be cloudy with temperatures around 50 degrees. There may be a slight break in the clouds around 4 pm, and temperatures will reach 57. The best chance for rain showers is after dark. Full Worm Moon tonight. The next full moon is on Earth Day – April’s Pink Moon.

Last night I started working on a script to automate LiDAR downloads. While I use conventional DEM data a lot and LiDAR isn’t that different – the HSES data is in DEM format – the tiles are quite small due to the high resolution of the data, and manual downloads are a pain. I don’t need LiDAR detail for many maps but on the other hand for some projects produces a helpful level of detail.

Working on Easter Weekend camping plans out. I’m pretty sure I know what I want to do but things could change as things progress. I still have to consider my work schedule and the weather.

Today in 2005 was the Texas City Refinery explosion. During a test on a distillation tower liquid waste builds up and flows out of a blowout tower. Waste fumes ignite and explode killing 15 workers. It doesn’t seem like that was over a decade ago.

At any rate, not every day can be bright and sunny. A few more days until the Easter Weekend. Have a great day!

March 23, 2016 Morning

Good morning. We are at 49 degrees and cloudy. We may shortly get some rain showers, so bring an umbrella on your morning commute. We are looking at 57 degrees for a high with cloudy weather and a 30% chance of rain showers. Mild day today, about 10 degrees above average. Tonight will be cloudy so unless a worm cuts through the clouds, the March Full Worm moon will not be visible.

March 22, 2016 Update

As we head into the 9 o’clock hour, we are up to 34 degrees with mostly sunny conditions with some clouds creeping in from the west. Still lots of sunshine and blue sky this morning. This won’t last, as the skies will be about 50% covered by clouds by 1 pm and mostly cloudy by evening with temperatures around 50, which is 3 degrees above normal. A mostly cloudy evening with a sunset at 7:11 pm, with an 8 pm temperature around 46 degrees.

In case your feeling good, make sure to wish the late James Brown a happy birthday. It’s also the birthday of Wolf Blitzer, the CNN news host.

Today in 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was approved by Congress, but was later rejected by the states. And even farther back in 1765, the Stamp Act Tax was approved by the British on the American colonies, in an effort to recover costs from the administration and protection of the colonies. This among other things would lead up to the American Revolution.

The weekend can’t come fast enough. I don’t know if I will have Good Friday off but one can hope. We will see. It still looks like a nice weekend forecast.

The next stop is mine. Have a great day, and enjoy the sun as it lasts!

March 22, 2016 Morning

Good morning. It’s a Tuesday. 30 degrees and mostly sunny with a breeze from the southwest. Later today the breeze is expected to increase along with clouds and by the time you head home, it will be mostly cloudy and temperatures around 50.

Have a great day!

March 21, 2016 Night

Well, good evening. The wind has died down a bit but the temperature has dropped to 34 degrees. By morning th National Weather Service is now predicting the mercury will drop to 26 degrees with skies varying from mostly to partly cloudy to some snow squalls throughout the night. No snowfall accumulation predicted. Tomorrow, seasonable 49 degrees is expected with increasing clouds throughout the day. Rain showers possible on Tuesday night but quite mild for March.

The transit of the moon is at 11:30 pm tonight when the moon will be high over head and due south anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Over 90% of the moon is visible tonight, with the moon setting at 5:30 AM tomorrow. Full moon is officially Wednesday but we will be be very close to a full moon tomorrow but it will be mostly covered by the clouds.

The Young Democrats meeting was enjoyable this evening once we got let into the building, and I got to go for my evening walk after it. Also picked up some food I forgot to get this weekend at the grocery store. I think it wasn’t a bad day for a Monday.

Sleep well. Tomorrow is Tuesday. Good night!

March 21, 2016 Update

How is your morning going? Mine is okay, I had to run to catch the bus which was running a few minutes early and me a few minutes late. We are now up to 33 degrees and mostly to partly cloudy with increasing blue skies especially to points north and west. It looks like the right lane of Delaware Ave is closed near Delaware Plaza, and while traffic is moving well, you might want to consider alternative routes.

Today, the transit of the sun is at 1:02 pm, which marks the midpoint in the day, and when the sun will be due south. There is six hours and seven minutes until the sun dips under the horizon from them. The mathematically inclined can figure out the length of the day from that. 46 degrees and sunny by mid afternoon.

Happy Birthday to Jonah Goldberg of the National Review fame, the establishment conservative magazine that has a lot of disdain for Donald Trump. While I’m a liberal Democrat, I always enjoy him when he is on Cam Edwards program.

Today in 1965, Dr.Β Martin Luther King, Jr.Β leads 3,200 people on the start of the third civil rights marchΒ from SelmaΒ toΒ Montgomery, Alabama. The protestors this time would be escorted and protected by the National Guard, as called for by President Johnson to avoid the violent clashes of earlier marches. This March would prove to be peaceful, and with the large democratic margins in Congress, they would enact the comprehensive Voting Rights Act of 1965.
