Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

April 11, 2016 Update

I’m glad the rain stopped by the time I walked out to the bus stop as I seem to to have misplaced yet another umbrella. I don’t know how this always happens. Now we are up to 45 degrees on the way up to 54. We certainly are not done for the rain for the day but it looks like the wind will drop down a bit.

Tonight sunset is at 7:33 pm. Waxing Crescent Moon with 1/3 visible until 10:30 pm. More rain tonight, 43 degrees. Kind of a wet start to the week but the week will get progressively nicer.

Today marks 10 weeks until the first official day of summer. It will be here before you know it. It’s also seven weeks until Memorial Day and 12 weeks until Independence Day. But who’s counting? Lots of Monday holidays this year.

Today in 1970, Apollo 13 launches. Things would go disastrously wrong on this space mission but due to some fly by the seat of your pants engineering, everybody would make it home alive.

Today in 1968 the housing discrimination law was passed ensuring equal access to housing to a wide variety of minorities. It was the last major piece of civil rights legislation approved as part of the Great Society package promoted by Lyndon Johnson.

April 11, 2016 Morning

Light rain and 44 degrees to start out our Monday morning. A bit of a breeze so an umbrella may be of limited use. 54 degrees and more rain later. Ditto for Tuesday. Sunny but cool conditions begin on Wednesday with progressive warming and sunny weather through next week. A long needed break from the cold.

I hope your Monday morning is going well… Have a good one.

April 10, 2016 Night

It was a pretty busy weekend but the weather was pleasant but cool and I got a lot done. About an hour ago, the Waxing Crescent Moon could be seen softly through the overcast skies but now it has set for the evening. Somewhere around 25% of the moon was visible tonight, by Wednesday we will be at the First Quarter Moon. The full pink moon is on Earth Day which this year falls on Friday, April 22nd.

Currently 43 degrees and mostly cloudy. For most of the night we will have overcast skies with an increasing chance of rain near daybreak. Low tonight around 38 degrees, which is 3 degrees above normal. Sunrise tomorrow morning is at 6:18 AM which is 1 minute and 40 seconds earlier then today. Tomorrow periods of rain are likely with a high around 54. Bring an umbrella, as we aren’t expecting a washout but you could get wet when it rains unexpectedly.

Today I went up to Saratoga with my parents to meet my new niece. She’s a cute little girl but tiny. Only two weeks old. But it seems like my sister and her fiancΓ©e are quite happy with their new kid. Not my kind of thing for sure. Then again she has the big fancy TV and stereo when I’m quite happy with for the most part living without such things. I don’t like being tied down to so many things. I’m happier traveling place to place in the wilderness.

In the afternoon I tried my unsuccessful hand at trout fishing the Ten Mile Creek in Rensselaerville. It was nice getting out there, a scenic creek, and an even more scenic drive out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. I also went down to Lawsons Lake and pulled out some sunnies but tossed them back in because I didn’t want to clean them once home.

I’m increasingly looking at going to the Finger Lakes for my April Road Trip. I kind of wanted to fish the Beaver Kill in Roscoe but I think I’d rather go to the Finger Lakes. By the end of April, there should be a lot of green out there. And if I really want to go trout fishing, I bet somewheres south of the Finger Lakes there must be some good cold water creeks for fishing. I may bring my kayak for paddling in one of the Finger Lakes along the shore if the wind is calm enough – or even the Montour Falls – Watkins Glen canal. Nothing is final yet. I might end up going to Pennsylvania to see the Pine Creek Gorge in spring. That would be pretty.

Somewhat tired, but I got nearly everything accomplished I needed to this weekend. Just laying in bed, under the dull red light that I use to help me go to sleep. Soon I’ll kill the light and go to bed. Good night.

April 10, 2016 Morning

Sunny but cold this morning. 25 degrees and breezy. High later of 46. Increasing clouds this afternoon, rain showers for Monday and Tuesday. Low tonight around 33 degrees with scattered showers. Sunset tonight at 7:32 pm for 13 hours and 12 minutes of daylight. While the clouds will likely block it, Waxing Crescent Moon with about 20% visible, setting in the west around 9:40 pm.

Later in the week look for more seasonable weather and sunshine (finally!). In the extended forecast, Wednesday through Saturday will either be sunny or mostly sunny. Wednesday and Thursday will only be in the low fifties for highs, but seasonable warmth returns for Friday and Saturday. 56 and 61 respectively. Sunday may reach 68. Going to be a nice spring weekend.

April 9, 2016 Night

34 degrees and partly cloudy. Decreasing clouds as the night progresses, and a cold night with a low around 24. The Waxing Crescent Moon set around 9 pm. First quarter moon on Wednesday. Sunrise at 6:19 am. Tomorrow will be sunny but cool, with a high only around 44 degrees. A bit of a breeze but the most day but with the bright sunshine should make it feel warmer.

It was a nice hike down along the rail trail. The gorge and waterfalls under the bridges is quite beautiful. I definitely want to do the hike again once it greens up.

Made some really good quiche with a pie crust mix, about a pound and a half of sliced mushrooms, about a dozen eggs, three cheeses and breadcrumbs.

Adding to my list of accomplishments, I got my wash done too.

Sitting in my room dimmed with the red light bulb. The dim red light seems to really improve my sleep and seems to improve my mood. I use the red light when watching TV or using my smartphone, as it seems to improve my sleep. The past few mornings I’ve been waking up so much more rested. Maybe it’s just a placebo. But it seems to work.

Good night. Sleep well.

April 9, 2016 Afternoon

It got nice for a while, although now it is partly cloudy. 43 degrees but feels warmer when there is no breeze. More clouds mid afternoon and some clearing before sunset at 7:32 pm. Thinking about going out to Rensselaerville to hit up Ten Mile Creek but we will see, it depends if it’s cloudy enough as its a bit of a drive from here. Alternatively maybe I’ll go for a walk and explore more of the Normans Kill ravine.

Busy morning. First cleaned out my truck, took a load of bottles and cans to the transfer station for recycling. Guy at the booth said I could park the truck over there and he’ll give me a ride home. Sweet truck he said. I couldn’t believe how many of the cans I had for recycling were burnt out – I only burn cans I use when camping – but I guess I’ve spent a lot of time camping.

Then I cleaned out my truck, sweeping the bed down, fixed the wiring on the truck cap to the shelf and gun rack that had pulled loose, running it this time in conduit to make it less likely to get tangled in gear. All the lights work again, although I do need to get some better super glue to re-glue down the power outlet. Put most of the gear back in truck.

I don’t think I’ll be out truck cap camping until the last week of the month but I may set up a tent at a local state forest and camp overnight next Saturday. 61 degrees and sunny next Saturday with a low of 39. A week from Sunday may reach 69. Which sounds hot but the reality is that the average temperature by next week is in the upper 50s, so 60 odd degree weather shouldn’t be rare.

April 8, 2016 Morning

Good morning, Happy Friday. 40 degrees, damp and cloudy. Earlier this morning we had a brief time of sunshine with a bit of blue sky. Looking at 46 degrees with clouds and a 30% chance of rain. Not a washout but still cold and cloudy. But a spring warm up is expected for the second half of the month. Sunset at 7:30. Keep your eyes peeled to the west shortly after sunset tonight in case it’s clear to see a beautiful Waxing Cresent Moon.

I was going to catch the express bus downtown but that didn’t happen because I made eggs for breakfast and didn’t get an early enough of a start. With the dampness, it probably would have been a cold walk down to the Park and Ride.

Seven weeks until the start of Memorial Day Weekend. 73 degrees is the typical high for the unofficial kick off for endless summer. I look forward to the nicer weather of summer. I could take a warm summer evening sooner than later.

But first the April trip. I have many different priorities, so I’m fairly undecided what I will do. I kind of want to fish the Beaver Kill. Part of it depends on the forecast and general conditions. I’m hoping by the end of the month at least in the low lands, it will be rapidly greening up. I thought about driving down south to see more of the Blue Ridge Parkway but I think I’d rather wait until November for that trip.

Today in 1935 was the start of the Works Progress Administration. It employed nearly one third of the unemployed during the Great Depression, and was a wildly popular program, that helped Franklin Roosevelt get re-elected with large margins in 1936.
