Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

May 15, 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon. Cloudy and cold morning today around 51 degrees. Blustery with a wind from West-Northwest 22 mph, with gusts up to 32 mph. Definitely watch for the cross winds on the roads especially if you have a big jacked up truck. Going to be a gray day, I don’t expect a lot of sun today but maybe it will peak out for a while this afternoon. Regardless it will be cold with the wind, gray skies and a chance of rain throughout the day.

Yesterday was the Lupine Festival at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission headquarters. It turned out to be a nice day, getting fairly warm and the rain held off to evening. I was dead tired last evening and slept for a while then played on my laptop and watched a rather strange program on race on PBS World Channel.

Made pancakes this morning. Then a few more maps for the blog. Then fixed the messed up maps. This week will feature Southern Madison County and Northern Chenango County. Also Pennsylvania Census data. Been cleaning up around the apartment.

May 13, 2016 Morning

Good morning folks. Happy Friday. The weekend is just around the corner. Currently 60 degrees and cloudy in Delmar. Going to get up to 67 degrees with showers moving in during the next few hours. It’s going to be a wet one today.

It is going to be fairly cloudy and rainy the next few days with 1/2 inch or more expected by Sunday when a front will come through and give us sunny but cold weather. The best chance for thunderstorms is tomorrow afternoon, but we might have some today too.

Yesterday we got to 80 degrees in Albany, for the second time of the year but with the breeze and low dew point in the 30s it felt pretty nice. Those hazy, hot and humid days are still just around the corner.

Two weeks until the start of the Memorial Day Weekend. I think I can already see the traffic building on the Adirondack Northway for the weekend. Although a lot depends on the weather, but I’ve seen years when traffic for holiday weekends is backed up on the Northway from the Warrensburg exit. I am leaning against the Adirondacks this year, instead thinking about the Kelley Stand section of Green Mountain National Forest, but that’s still to be decided on. One problem with the GMNF is getting out there on the holiday weekend, and limited routes with traffic and the alike.

The average high for Memorial Day Weekend in Albany is 73 degrees with a low of 51. Sunset is atΒ 8:23 pm on Memorial Day Weekend with dusk around 8:56 pm. Not too bad, but it can be kind of chilly up north, and the black flies can be bad. With such cool, damp weather, I don’t know if Moose River Plains will be open this year for Memorial Day Weekend, or if it is, there may be various road restrictions.

Today in 1960,Β Β Hundreds of University of California, Berkeley students congregate for the first day of protest against a visit by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Thirty-one students are arrested, and the Free Speech Movement is born.

In 1963, the Earl Warren court announced theΒ Brady v. Maryland, 373 U.S. 83 (1963) decision that lead to the Brady rule, which is standard in courts today. It was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the prosecution had withheld from the criminal defendant certain evidence. The defendant challenged his conviction, arguing it had been contrary to the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Happy Birthday to Darius Rucker.Β I still associate his song Wagon Wheel with that awful bar with the same name in Niagara Falls which has now long closed down.

May 11, 2016 Night

Sitting out back right now looking up at the moon and stars above. In the hour or so past dusk the temperature has dropped a bit, we are now down to 58 degrees. Still a quite pleasant evening. I hear deer crashing through the woods where the marshy, partially piped under Phillipin Kill runs. Not quite the wilderness but still some solitude out back.

I went down to the park for a while this evening after the town board meeting. Nice evening down at the park. The passed a resolution condemning the Pilgrim Pipeline and I had no problem speaking against that. I had no idea why I was invited to the meeting by my friend, but it was worthwhile. Passing a strong anti-Piligrim pipelines law with a lot of public support sends a message. A lot of municipalities have been voicing their opposition to this pipeline.

While I watched the PBS Newshour tonight, I on put together some more Google Maps. Tomorrow I’ll start featuring them. I made maps of farm wineries, median income of Pennsylvania, and one of income by block group in Clinton County. Should be real interesting to look at during the coming week. A week from Friday the local April unemployment numbers come out and they’ll be fun to map too.

Well have a great evening. Sleep well.

May 11, 2016 Morning

Good morning on this beautiful Twilight Zone Day. 56 degrees and sunny. Looking at a beautiful day with a high around 74. That’s about seven degrees above normal. We enter the twilight zone at sunset around 8:07 pm and it concludes at dusk around 8:39 pm. At twilight it will be 66 degrees under clear skies. A low tonight of 45 degrees which is one degree below normal.

Spring has arrived. Sunday will already be May 15th. 40 days until the official start of summer. Five months until September 11th. I look forward to getting up to the Adirondacks next week or maybe Memorial Day Weekend. Assuming that the weather doesn’t return to frigid conditions or rain. This year I’m not going to sit up at Moose River Plains for three days in 40 degrees pouring rain.

May 9, 2016 9 AM Update

As we head into the 9 o’clock hour we are up to 51 degrees on our way up to 61 or maybe 64 degrees. Things are really greening up in the city and there are nothing but fair weather clouds this morning. There are too many months of brown without leaves in Albany.

Definitely a nice day. I know when I have to head between buildings at work today, I’ll go above ground rather than the dark and dank tunnels downtown.

Three weeks from now will be Memorial Day with all the parades and such. While I’ve been waiting for summer forever, it still seems like Memorial Day is early this year with the cold April and May. I wonder how much of Moose River Plains will be open this year, I’ll though I doubt I’ll be heading up that way this year for the holiday weekend. In related news, six weeks until the official start of summer and eight weeks until the fourth of July. All Mondays this year, although since early 1970s, Memorial Day has been a Monday.

Today back in 1964,Β NgΓ΄ Đình CαΊ©n,Β de factoΒ ruler of centralΒ VietnamΒ under his brother President Ngo Dinh DiemΒ before the family’s toppling, is executed. This would be a factor that would lead to the American involvement in the disastrous Vietnam War.

Almost to work. Have a great day!

May 9, 2016 Morning

Good morning. Happy Monday. The weekend will be here before you know it. 43 degrees and sunny this morning. The wind is whipping around a bit. Looking at 62 degrees but with a stiff westerly breeze this afternoon that will make it feel somewhat cooler. Cold tonight with frost expected in the outlying areas and temperatures in the city expected to drop to 36. Tomorrow continued sunny and seasonable warmth around 67. Less breezy too.

Being a cereal killer this morning, chopping down on Cheerios for a change. Nice thing is cheerios don’t involve much dish washing. They don’t require the stove which is good especially when the mornings get warm in a few weeks.

Have a great Monday. Tomorrow is Tuesday!
