Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

May 23, 2016 Morning

I think the synchronizer is kind of worn off as we shift down into the first gear of the week. 64 degrees and beautiful on this 23rd day of the month of May in 2016. Heading up to 79 degrees later. With a dew point maxing out around 50 degrees and mostly sunny skies predicted, it’s going to be a pretty amazing day.

You might say that going today is going to work inside today is cruel and unusual punishment. Why couldn’t we have had this weather over the weekend? That said, it’s only going to get warmer as the unofficial start of summer is kicked off with the Memorial Day Weekend. Hazy, hot and humid conditions expected this upcoming long weekend. That means thunderstorms in the afternoons.

Four weeks from now will be the official start of the summer. Something to definitely look forward to. But in the meantime, I’m focused on surviving the work week in favor of the long weekend. I just hope that the weekend forecast holds true better than last week.

I am pretty sure I’m off to Branch Pond Road or somewhere nearby for the Memorial Day Weekend in the Southern Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont. I think I’ll avoid the clusterfuck known as NY 7 aka Hoosick Street by taking NY 2 to Massachusetts and somehow heading north.

I still want to get up to Stewart Landing but I think I will hold off on that until June. Probably camp one night at the drive in sites at Stewart Landing and paddle into a site for the second night. I normally camp up at Powley Place when paddling Canada Lake but it would be nice to be closer to the water. I’m hoping to get a small inexpensive solar spotlight so I can light up the flag when camping lake side.

May 22, 2016 Night

As we head into the final hour of the weekend, it’s 61 degrees. It was a good weekend but time went by too quickly. I liked going up to the Adirondacks but those days flew by. But a got a lot of rest and both days I slept in quite late.

It was nice camping off of Pumpkin Hollow Road, but it wasn’t exactly quite. The campsite I was at was pretty remote but just down the road from a hunting camp, where they were shooting a 30-06 or other large deer rifle, fireworks at night, chopping wood, running chainsaws and ATVs for most of the time I was up there. Not right next to the property line but I could definitely hear them through the woods. I prefer to be more remote, as I too like shooting guns and listening to music well into the night. I can’t call a kettle black.

Fishing wasn’t terrible on Saturday when there was a good steady flow coming through the hydro plant. I wish I could have snagged more brown trout but I wasn’t really going to keep.

I like being relatively close to Wells, especially once things are warm up and the beach is open. I also want to explore Willis Lake with my kayak, although it’s pretty small and maybe somewhat over developed.

Discovered I have a problem with the propane ‘y’ splitter I have – it’s not a temperature/pressure issue as it was malfunctioning in the mild weather yesterday. I think the internal regulator isn’t working right. As much as I like free shipping from Amazon, I sometimes wonder about the quality of no name products, regardless of reviews. Maybe the splitter is just clogged. I should try some carburetor cleaner or see what the Internet suggests. Worse case scenario, I drop another $30-50 to get a better quality splitter. But hopefully the web will help me fix it.

Also did the Save the Pine Bush Hike today. Took lots of wildflower pictures and will be posting later. While mild, the weather turned out quite nice for the hike. Too bad it was very lightly attended.

Good night. Tomorrow is Monday. Sunny and mild.

May 18, 2016 Morning

Sunshine came softly through my window today. Take it Sunshine Superman. 54 degrees and cloudy partly cloudy this morning. 67 degrees and partly cloudy this afternoon. Almost seasonable weather for the third week of April.

The Altamont Fair opens in 90 days. Summer will come and go before you know it. That is depressing.

Today in 1896, the United States Supreme Court rules inย Plessy v. Fergusonย that the “separate but equal” doctrine is constitutional. That still rules the day with city school districts allowed to segregate “colored and poor” students from the suburban school district. They really should allow students to be bussed to any school within a 30 or so mile radius.

Today In 1980,ย Mount St. Helensย eruptsย in Washington, United States, killing 57 people and causing $3ย billion in damage. Nature can be a bitch.

Now the weather doesn’t look as great on some of the models, with clouds expected to prevail on Saturday in some models. We’ll have to watch that carefully. I still would like to get up to the Adirondacks.

The moon will be about 80% illuminated tonight, with the full flower moon on Saturday evening. 60 degrees and partly cloudy at dusk.ย Neil Gifford will be at the Save the Pine Bush Dinner tonight at the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Chesnut Street.

May 17, 2016 Night

53 degrees and clearing out to the west with stars shinning down. The moon is almost due south and about 80% full as we head to the full flower moon on Saturday. 43 degrees for the low tonight.

Dawn tomorrow is at 4:55 AM with sunrise at 5:28 AM. By afternoon look forward to partly to mostly sunny skies and 69 degrees. Going to be a nice spring afternoon. Save the Pine Bush Dinner is tomorrow evening. Should be a good one.

Sleep well. Good night.

May 16, 2016 Night

Heading into the 11 o’clock hour we are at 42 degrees and partly cloudy. Increasing clouds tonight, looking for the temperature to drop a few more degrees, but not much colder. Dawn at 4:58 am. Tomorrow will be warmer with a nearly seasonable 67 degrees and cloudy. Chance of rain in the afternoon.

May 16, 2016 9 AM Update

Not sure if I really needed my wool over coat today but I wore it. 46 degrees and mostly cloudy but the breeze doesn’t seem super cold. A lot of gray creeping in now. Running late for work, I’m taking the late bus downtown. I guess I can always stay late if I fall behind on work. It’s Monday.

I hope that the weekend remains as predicted. I could really go for a nice weekend in the Adirondacks enjoying the black fly season. This spring has been ridiculously cold and wet. I’m super happy for the second half of week and the weekend should the forecast prove true.

Sunset tonight is at 8:12 pm and dusk at 8:45. We are only five weeks away from the first day of summer, the longest day of the year, with an 8:36 pm sunset. At sunset tonight, we are looking at 54 degrees under mostly clear skies with a pretty good breeze. I’ll probably end up walking down to the library.

Today in 1960, Theodore Maimanย operates the firstoptical laserย (aย ruby laser), atย Hughes Research Laboratoriesย inย Malibu, California. Lasers are common place and used in a wide variety of applications, such as LiDAR.

Have a great day. Before you know, we will be out of crawl gear of the week and in over drive.

May 16, 2016 Morning

Good morning. Happy Monday. 44 degrees under partly sunny skies with blustery conditions. 56 degrees for the high which is 14 degrees below normal. Continued breezy and blustery downtown for the rest of the day. Rain showers for tomorrow.
