The Elm Avenue Park and Ride offers a convenient way to get downtown without the hassles of urban traffic. Located next to the Elm Avenue Park at the end of the Delmar Bypass (NY 32), it is serviced by several buses that will quickly transport you downtown.
There is a new, expanded schedule for the Elm Avenue Park and Ride. 5 morning buses depart there, 5 buses in the afternoon plus a mid-day bus schedule. Very convenient. http://www.cdta.org/uploads/Route719.pdf
Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday is the Last Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐. Overcast and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 am. ๐
Five Rivers was nice yesterday ๐ธ although with less wildlife out and about compared to the spring. There was a lot of people out there too although not so much where I was hiking.
Today will have patchy fog ๐ and clouds before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 8th. This morning I’m working on various small improvements to the blog ๐ป and then I’ll probably go out hiking before heading out to the folks for the night. ๐ I’m dog sitting ๐ถ while they’re on vacation. Definitely a nice day.
The sun will set at 7:41 pm with dusk around 8:10 pm, which is one minute and 37 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ Those days of the 8:37 pm sunset are long gone. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 24 minutes of day, an decrease of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1942.
On this day in 1950, President Harry Truman orders the U.S. Army to seize control of the nation’s railroads to avert a strike. ๐๐So much for the boy from Missouri being a socialist, even if he was a really bad driver. ๐
As previously noted, next Sunday is Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:29 pm with dusk at 7:58 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 79 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Six weeks to Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐. Fog and 71 degrees at the Elm Avenue Park and Ride. ๐ซย There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐. The dew point is 66 degrees.ย Once the fog burns off, the skies should clear and it should be a pretty nice afternoon evening. Not a bad walk down to the Park and Ride, ๐ another big commercial inspection there today. It’s the only way commercial vehicles can get from Albany points South and West due to road restrictions and low bridges, so that’s why it’s so popular with the commercial vehicles.๐ฎ
Tonight at 7 PM I am leading the Save the Pine Bush Hike. ๐ฒ It’s going to be a night hike, but should be a pretty good one with clouds burn off an the humidity drops down. We will meet up at the Discovery Center and then hike for about two hours — until well after dark, and then do Blueberry Hill Dune to enjoy the stars after dark.๐ The reason for meeting at the Discovery Center is that the parking lot there is lit all night, which makes it safer to get back to the vehicles after dark.
Later on today, partly sunny ๐ค, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am, then dropping through the afternoon. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1916.
The sun will set at 7:45 pm with dusk around 8:15 pm, which is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ค and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Last night was the Save the Pine Bush Dinnerย featuring Professor Lou Ismay, which you can listen to the SPB Podcasts Page.ย Good lasagna and interesting lecture. I avoided drinking caffeinated coffee this time, โ but I sure was tired by the time I got home.๐ฎ I thought about getting milk when I got home, but I waited until this morning to walk over to Stewart’s and buy milk. It turned out I had enough milk at home from the past weekend, and it wasn’t spoiled, so I finished up this morning, and will have more of my favorite cow beverage for tonight.
Today in 1971, twenty of the Camden 28 were arrested. They were a group of “Catholic left” anti-Vietnam War activists who in 1971 planned and executed a raid on a Camden, New Jersey draft board. โThe raid resulted in a high-profile criminal trial of the activists that was seen by many as a referendum on the Vietnam War and as an example of successful use of jury nullification.โ
Should be a nice final weekend of summer — cool but sunny. ๐ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Maximum dew point of 58 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, the closing day for most of the state park pools, with many beaches already done for the summer.๐ Fortunately the Potholers don’t close until it gets too cold, so I might get one more trip up there this autumn.
One month ๐ from now will be Autumn ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:52 pm with dusk at 7:20 pm. The average high temperature is 70 degrees, with a record high of 95 in 1897.

The dew point is 62 degrees. I’m kind of dripping from the sweat ๐ฐ walking down to the express bus. The skies will clear Sunday around 7 pm.
I went to bed early last night and got up early today ๐ thinking I would finish packing and then hit up the grocery store and then head to the Adirondacks after work. ๐ญ Looking at the forecast this morning I changed my mind as Saturday doesn’t look great up north so instead I think I will get up early tomorrow and head north.
That way I’ll only be gone three nights so I expect the ice will last and I won’t have to worry about moving my campsite after three nights. โบ I don’t expect a lot of people up north tomorrow being it expected to be cloudy and mid August when few people vacation. This way too I can head up on Saturday morning when traffic is light, not have to set up gear in the darkness or buy firewood. Money is a bit tight so everywhere I can save a few bucks it helps.
It will be four days at the potholers through Tuesday cooling off ๐. Should be nice to lay back on the hammock with a cold one and a book ๐ and be off the grid for a few days. Have nice fires every night ๐ฅ, listen to music ๐ถ as loud as I want, maybe set up targets and shoot guns. ๐ฏ Basically just get away from it for a few days.
Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Partly sunny โ , with a high of 82 degrees at3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 69 at 3pm. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Today in 1916, the Migratory Bird Treaty between Canada and the United States signed. ๐ฆ It was designed to save Migratory Birds by giving them international protection for the first time by placing limits on hunting and other means of taking. Gotta buy your duck stamp if your hunting migratory birds.
In 1989, a solar flare from the Sun creates a geomagnetic storm that affects micro chips,โ leading to a halt of all trading on Toronto’s stock market. I notice with my display that I built in my bedroom, sometimes in humid weather I have a lot of errors, although in the winter I have less. Not sure if that’s humidity causing shorts and bad connections or if its the lack of shielding on the wires.
Also, in 1993, Debian Linux is announced, it would become the basis of many forms of Linux like Ubuntu Linux, ๐ป which is currently what I run on my home computer.
And in 1966, the House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigations of Americans who have aided the Viet Cong. ๐บThe committee intends to introduce legislation making these activities illegal. Anti-war demonstrators disrupt the meeting and 50 people are arrested.

The plan is next weekend to stay in town. ๐ก But this weekend I’ll head north. I might take the Friday off before Memorial Day Weekend, although it depends if I can get coverage for my clients at work. I also want to take some time off in September and October plus the week before Columbus Day off. Labor Day Weekend I was originally planning on Piseco-Powley Road, but maybe I’ll do what I did last year with that campsite I really like on Jessup River Road or maybe I’ll head back to Vermont. Depends on the forecast.๐

I decided today to hike up to Hunter Mountain along the West Kill trail. ๐ถ Later on I plan to see Pratts Rocks in Prattsville and then head up to Burnt Rossman. โบ Tomorrow I’ll do some fishing ๐ฃ in Looking Glass Pond and hit up the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley and then swim ๐ in Mine Kill State Park.
I fully admit if I was a responsible adult I would have gone to the Save the Pine Bush organizational meeting ๐ฒand stayed in town to save gas on my limited budget. But summer is rapidly fading away and I wanted to get out of town before its done and I’m sure rainy weekends aren’t that far off. โ I don’t feel that guilty though, I’ve spent more time on that map and researching things over the past few weeks than anything else I’ve been doing.

Driving through Greenville and stopping at the grocery store ๐ฌ I had forgotten what a hick town I grew up in. Fun place although I don’t know if I’d ever want to go back now with all the gun restrictions ๐ซ and regulations today on open burning ๐ฅ – and I was surprised how expensive things were at the store. But then again in Albany I mostly shop for things on sale at Walmart. I do like the small towns and spend most of my vacation time there but its still cultural shock to go back to the community I haven’t been in regularly for going on two decades now. I’ve worked in other hick towns but the hometown is strange. The girls at the grocery store with their Irish red hair are very cute. ๐ But as I like to say, their husbands own more guns than me. Fit in well with my big jacked up truck ๐ though. That said, I can’t see moving back to the country until I can live in a place where I can have fires and burn whatever I want on my own land. ๐ More on that later.
I forgot how popular the Catskills are these days ๐ป but they sure are beautiful. I should do some more Catskill peaks this fall, maybe truck cap camping in Schoharie or just do day trips. I’ve been taking a lot of pictures but mostly on my 35mm camera ๐ท so it will have to wait for posting until Sunday or Monday. I’m also making a ton of videos. Fortunately, despite hitting a lot of traffic around the fire tower ๐ผ the ledge I’m on is relatively quiet and has nice views when you peer over the tree line. ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฒSun is coming out โ and I’m lazy so I’m procrastinating a bit but I should hurry up so I also have time to see Pratts Rocks.

I decided not to pack for heading out of town last night. ๐ป That said I’m not committed to staying in town this weekend but I doubt I’ll go anywhere before tomorrow morning. I’m actually kind of leaning towards hiking on Saturday ๐ถ in the Northern Catskills ๐ and then Sunday swimming at Mine Kill State Park one last time before it closes for the summer. I’ve been thinking about visiting Pratts Rocks which surprisingly enough I’ve never been to.

I need to find my battery ๐ charger, I’m sure it’s around somewhere before I head out for the weekend. I’m sure the weekend will come and go quickly – I’m thinking about doing at least one more long weekend before the summer comes to a close and September rolls around. โบ Maybe I’ll take the Friday before Labor Day Weekend off and head up to the Pisceo Powley Road early. I think if it’s hot that weekend, the Potholers would be nice. Amazing to think about summer coming to a close and September just around the corner.
