Expressway of Life

“Take your time, think a lot, for you may still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.”
Father and Son, Cat Stevens

At age 35 — going on 36 come January — suddenly I’m realizing that I’m getting old. Not that old — still another 30 years until I’m officially a senior, but as time passes more doors close on life, roads not taken are forever gone, just like a missed exit on an expressway. People warn me all the time. Things you can do at 35, will no longer be available in your 40s and 50s, or so I’m told. As life goes on, your list of “permanent disabilities” only grows.

But I’m not ready to give up on the expressway I am on carefully, for some far out dream that I don’t have the resources or the knowledge to fully implement. Usually when you exit the expressway in your life, there is no way to get back on it.

A Visit to Opioid-Country

A Visit to Opioid-Country

"In early November, I got a mild cold. I felt bad for a day, then felt better, then started coughing and didn’t stop coughing for a whole month. As if by way of compensation, the doctor gave me an orange flask of codeine cough syrup. This was a problem for me because I’m a recovering addict. But I didn’t mention this, because I’m a recovering addict. I said to myself: Think of it as medicine."

"I was supposed to take 5 mL every four hours, β€œas needed.” I knew 5 mL was either one teaspoon or one tablespoon, and this confusion was more or less genuine, but I strategically avoided looking up the answer and chose the larger dose. This led predictably to a drug experience. My eyes turned red, I felt a buzzing sensation, I stumbled and walked into walls, I couldn’t relax enough to pee, I couldn’t speak at the right volume, I craved sugar. I was aware that I was behaving more cheerfully than usual, but I did not experience a feeling of good cheer. My head hurt very much. After four hours, I drank what I judged to be a second tablespoon directly from the flask."

I just saw an advertisement for fluoride-free tooth paste on Facebook. I am glad the John Birch Society is still concerned about the Russian mind-control plot using fluoride, rather then the one involving Facebook. That or maybe it’s just the dentists who want more cavities, as more cavities equals more profits.
