Greene County

Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. Its name is in honor of the American Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. As of the 2010 census, the population was 49,221. Its county seat is Catskill. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Greene County is located in southeast central New York State, just west of the Hudson River and south of Albany.

The northern and eastern regions are mostly low-lying flatlands. Along the Hudson River the lowest elevation is at sea level. The southern and western areas rise sharply into the Catskill Mountains.

Catskill Park takes up much of the south central region. The park contains some of the tallest peaks south of the Adirondacks. For example, the highest elevation is Hunter Mountain, at approximately 4,040 feet (1,232 m) above sea level; In addition, there are many picturesque waterfalls in the park such as the famed, Kaaterskill Falls.

Leonard Hill

You can see the fire tower on Leonard Hill from this range. I hope some day they open that tower up, because I'm sure it has some great views of the Catskills.

Red Dirt Road

This is the spur off the main DEC Road up and over South Mountain. It leads part of the way up Richmond Mountain before it peters out to a logging road. Notice how the DEC has clear cut this area.

Along the Long Path

This is up on the ridge of South Mountain, below Ashland Pinnacle. The trail was hard to follow through this section, as a lot of trees that had blazes on them where long fallen, although for a while the trail followed the log haul road.

Thomas Cole Mountain

Two weekends ago I went out hiking on a portion of the Blackhead Range, known for it’s Rooster Comb that it visible from most of the Catskills and Albany. Heading down there, I missed the turn-off to Barnum Road, which is a side road marked with a “Forest Preserve Access” sign from County Route 40, just as you head south out of Maplecrest.

Finally Found the Trailhead

The first part of the trail follows the right of way of the Old Barnum Road, until you access the Blackhead mountain Wilderness, and the kiosk welcoming you to the trail.

The trail up the mountain starts out gentle, then follows a series of switchbacks.

Then there is one steep portion, with some beautiful broken views of the East Kill Valley.
