January 25, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Already Wednesday or maybe the week is going too slow. Farmers Market Day, maybe I will get some apples ๐Ÿ to have in my office.

Mostly cloudy and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. There are 7 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Just remember that number come tomorrow. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Nice morning before the snow storm ๐ŸŒจ though kind of gray. But the mornings aren’t as dark as they were only a few weeks ago, and to boot I was out walking before 6:45. The skies to the southeast are very firery red. ๐ŸŒ…

Been trying to get out earlier for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ which the lighter breakfasts and less procrastination help a lot at that. I may also push back my first alarm โฐ to 5:45 am so I have more time to fool around before getting out of bed ๐Ÿ›.

Today will snow. The snow could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒจ High of 33 degrees at 11am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 8 seconds over today.

Cynthia Pooler of Focus on Albany fame ๐ŸŽค was going to have a fundraiser and recording sessio for her documentary on Reszin Adams but with the snow storm coming and the fact it’s all the way out in Colonie and no where near a bus stop ๐Ÿšmakes me think that it’s best to mail โœ‰ a check. If it had been in Albany I probably would have gone even if it was snowy, but I’m not driving in this crap or walking in a blizzard and suit and tie in the automobile ghetto.

Tonight will rain and snow before midnight, then a chance of rain between midnight and 1am, then a slight chance of rain showers after 1am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 32 degrees at 6pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. I am not really sure what to expect about the snow storm. โ˜” It’s probably going to be an elevation storm but lately a lot of people are saying more snow. I still am considering camping for my 40th birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ but Friday looks cold and there might be a ton of heavy wet snow to shovel out a parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ spot.

NOAA is still saying more clouds for the weekend. โ˜๏ธ But mild so the snow won’t stick around in any quantity. Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

How to calcuate what percentage income a person is using R and Census Microdata

Here is how to a create a table of percent income using R and Census Public Use Microdata and the Qauntile function.

library(tidycensus)
library(tidyverse)
library(hutils)
library(gt)

# Grab Public Use Microdata for Albany County, with
# PINCP = Total Personal Income see View(pums_variables)
# puma areas can be found with tigris and mapview for an interactive
# map of the puma areas: mapview::mapview(tigris::pumas('ny'))
aci <- get_pums(variables = 'PINCP', state = "NY",puma = c('02001','02002'))

# next use hutil's weight2rows to expand out the dataframe so that
# eached weighted observation has one row per observation
# then filter to only include persons with salary income, > $2
# extract out only the .$PINCP variable, then calculate quantile for
# 0, 5, 10, ... 90, 95, 99 percent
aci %>%
  weight2rows('PWGTP') %>%
  filter(PINCP > 2) %>%
  .$PINCP %>%
  quantile(c(seq(0,0.95,0.05),.99)) -> y

# create a tibble with the quantile ranges
# (what percentage am i)
# and calculated quantile values (how much income)
df2 <- tibble(
  x=100-c(seq(0,0.95,0.05),.99)*100,
  y=y
)

# Zero out the 100% value, to overcome
# how the Census stores $1, $2, etc.
df2[1,2] <- 0

# Create the table with gt
df2 %>%
  select( Salary = y, `Top Percent` = x) %>%
