Good morning! Happy Monday. Six more weeks until calendar spring ๐. Probably best considered in relationship to a week before trout season. ๐ฃ Or as my dairy farming colleague from years ago told me he counted down the weeks until spring based on the loads of manure spread. ๐ฉ Seems appropriate for a winter Monday where the ground is likely to be thawed out by afternoon.
Partly cloudy at the freezing point in Delmar for the morning walk. โ Calm wind. The full ๐ moon is pretty overhead. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธNot a half bad morning for a walk. It’s February so the standards are pretty low. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ก๏ธ
I accidentally made biscuits with pancake mix ๐ช which didn’t turn out that bad although I should have taken them out of the oven a bit sooner. ๐ฅ I thought about getting eggs yesterday when I got milk ๐ฎ at Stewart’s as their price wasn’t that bad relatively speaking but I always associate eggs with greasy camp breakfasts with sausage and lots of cheese and vegetables ๐ณ and I’m trying to cut calories in my forties. I do like eggs when camping ๐ and want a heavier breakfast before a busy day of chopping wood and hiking.
Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ฅ, with a high of 40 degrees at 12pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Light north wind increasing to 8 to 13 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 36 degrees. Warmer than last year today. Makes up for Saturday. The record high of 55 was set in 1991. 10.8 inches of snow fell back in 1978.โ
I have a few projects on my desk ๐ and an afternoon meeting so it should be a busy day though I don’t anticipate working late, though I’ll be taking the local ๐ as it’s a session day. My goal ๐ฅ is to get my steps done ๐ฃ which if I head over to the Capitol or run some errands and then do my evening work I should be good.

Maximum wind chill around 15 at 3am; North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1995.
Certainly a bit cooler tonight ๐ but it’s February and I’m not complaining as I’ve backed down my heat and it’s not so cold. The moonlight should be nice for the evening walk ๐ถ and then I’ll retire to bed ๐ fairly early. When I go to bed early even if I do wake up during the night I usually feel well rested the next day.
Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐ Still mild. Saturday, a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 36. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees. No real plans for the weekend ๐ฆ though Five Rivers is always a nice walk ๐ถ and I like seeing the cows ๐ฎ on Meads Road. Maybe a good weekend to observe the birds.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Presidents Day ๐ด when the sun will be setting at 5:34 pm with dusk at 6:01 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 28 and 13 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 37 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1930. Maybe a good week to head out of town.
In these inflationary times, always looking for lower cost ways to pass the time. Walked along Meads Road and out to Five Rivers for a while today. ๐ถ
Walking, bar of course the wear and tear on the boots is free and a good way to see things. No need to hop in a car to drive somewhere when there are scenic views and nice places to walk and explore not far from home. That said by late afternoon it was starting to get a bit chilly with the breeze and the mercury dropping. With the wind, not a lot of wildlife out and about but at least a lot of snow was gone. Cows though were out by the road at Meads Farm.
Good morning! Happy Sunday. Mostly cloudy and 28 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ There is a south breeze at 14 mph. ๐. The current wind chill is 17. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ก๏ธ
Still kind of cold โ this morning but I guess it’s an improvement from what it was yesterday. Still with that breeze it’s an improvement from what it was yesterday. I’ve turned down the heat, closed the cabinets under the sink and aren’t wearing a full face mask or gloves ๐งค for the morning walk ๐ถ which I delayed for a bit.
Today will be partly sunny ๐, with a high of 41 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 3rd. South wind 10 to 14 mph. Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Daylight Savings Time ๐ when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:25 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 60 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 44 degrees. We hit a record high of 69 back in 2012.
Good morning! Happy Saturday. Why so negative? โ๏ธ I mean it’s a beautiful day, just cold as shit. I think it was about negative eleven when I woke up, but it’s warming up fast I tell myself. My bedroom was only 45 degrees at six o’clock when I awoke though I didn’t notice it at all until I actually looked the thermometer in my bedroom. ๐ I am just used to the cold, after all this winter camping and because I keep my heat low as I like to keep my heating bills down. I left the cabinets open under the sink, and there were no issues with frozen pipes, though the water was cold coming out of the sink for a few seconds before hot water arrive from the hot water heater. I have to admit I probably let the water run more washing dishes then I should have ๐ฝ but the warm water was nice. Probably won’t take a shower ๐ until tomorrow, just because I’m not going anywhere, and it would be cold getting out of the shower.
Sunny and -9 degrees in Delmar. ๐ There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐. The current wind chill is -26. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ก๏ธ I am waiting a little bit on my morning walk, until it’s at least zero degrees on and I can put on the face mask, gloves and thermal underwear. I don’t think it’s as windy as they say from looking at the trees, though there was some good good gusts for a while yesterday. Going to be in the 40s tomorrow, and most of the week.
Things warmed up quickly though inside โจ๏ธ when I turned on the portable electric space heater. Technically my bedroom has baseboard electric heat to supplement that gas radiators downstairs, but I never use them. They smell so bad until the dust burns off, are expensive to run, and don’t put the heat right where I want it like a little electric space heater. Electric heat is much quicker then gas for sure, especially with the 220 volt 40 amp circuits or whatever they are. Maybe I could make it even warmer in here, but I don’t want to pay for the heat in this cold weather. I did patch up more air leaks around the door, it seems pretty good now. What can I say, it’s an inexpensive, run down apartment.
Today will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 15 degrees at 3pm. 19 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -26 at 8am; Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph becoming south in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1991. 15.5 inches of snow fell back in 1926.โ
Until it warms up, ๐ค I am working on some maps and data analysis using my laptop. Already the wind is slowing, so I am hopeful to get out in a bit. But I have some interesting ideas of maps and data I can extract. I noticed that NYSUT has posted electronic spreadsheet versions of the school aid runs, ๐ค so I can use it to make maps. Also, I want to do some things with sunset and length of day and make some interesting maps. But I am hoping it will be warm enough, I won’t be spending all day inside. That would be a bummer for a Saturday. But it’s so cold right now.
While my plans aren’t set in stone, ๐ฅ I am leaning towards a hike out to Five Rivers today, ๐ฆ assuming it gets warmer, the wind remains calm and I can bundle up. I want to get my steps in. I did go to library last night to work on some projects for a while, and I don’t like going there on the weekends when it’s crowded, but I’ll see how cold it is later on. Maybe at least I can go for a walk ๐ถโ๏ธ around the superblock, and get 2 1/2 miles if I wear gloves ๐งค and my full-face mask. ๐ซ Maybe Meads Road, I like seeing the farm country and cows at that way. ๐

On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 26 and 12 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. Good morning! Yeah, it’s a Frigid Friday! Mostly because that’s all the radio news wants to talk about. Dress in layers, avoid exposed skin and you’ll be fine. Bye, bye America Pie. ๐ฅง Do you recall what was revealed the day the music died? ๐ถ That was 64 years ago today, which means there are fewer and fewer people can remember that day. But it’s still a good song by Don McLean. It’s a song that one can sing along withand it opened up the then new Empire State Plaza during the bicentennial. It’s amazing to think America ๐บ๐ธ turns 250 in 2026.
Okay, it’s winter. โ But I left the heat turned up so it was plenty warm inside. Too warm for my tastes but along with leaving the cabinets open I wanted to prevent the pipes from freezing. Come Sunday I’ll back the heat down to 48 degrees. I have gas heat so it’s not really expensive but I’ve grown to like the cold. Skipped my morning walk ๐ถ in favor of taking the time earlier express bus ๐ and walking laps in the Concourse. I’m going to try to get as many steps as possible inside the Concourse today.
Today will be mostly sunny, with a temperature fallivng to around 3 by 5pm. โ Breezy, with a northwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 2016. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2004.โ
Yesterday I did 17,000 steps as I visited a friend at the hospital ๐ฅ midday. It’s different now with the COVID, you get screened before entering and are given a paper muzzle. I’ve never worn a paper muzzle ๐ท only a cloth one though I stuck it under my cloth one.

What can I say, it’s going to brutally cold โ this evening. I might actually take up the express bus ๐ drivers option to get dropped off closer to home. And I might not do the evening walk ๐ถ though I am thinking about walking ๐ down to the library for a while. That said, so much of it is hype because people aren’t used to the cold. I checked the voltage and my truck starting battery ๐ is happy with the cold. โบ The solar panel is dumping the excess voltage into the starting battery. When it’s very cold out, it’s almost always sunny out and the trickle charge keeps things floating along at a nice voltage โก.

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. โ South wind 13 to 16 mph. The cold will have broken but it will be still cold with the wind. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who wants to remove fossil fuels from buildings to fight climate change, unveiled proposed legislation Wednesday that lays out details and answers a question many have asked: What about cooking with gas?
In short, Hochul’s new bill would ban cooking equipment that uses natural gas or other fossil fuels, but only in new construction. People who already cook with gas could continue to do so indefinitely, even if they have to replace their existing stove someday.
Hochul’s all-electric building legislation, part of her sweeping state budget proposal, generally follows the plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions finalized in December by the state Climate Action Council.
Good morning! Happy Ground Hog Day. ๐ป He didn’t see his shadow, six more weeks of winter. Though maybe NOAA does not agree ๐ as they’re talking about the upper forties and maybe even fifty come mid next week.
