Cumberland, MD

Cumberland, officially the City of Cumberland, is a western gateway city and seat of Allegany County, Maryland, United States and the primary city of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 20,859, and the metropolitan area had a population of 103,299. Cumberland is a regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. Cumberland is commonly referred to as “Where The South Begins,” as official United States Census Bureau records place it below the Mason Dixon line.

The amount of rail infrastructure remaining around Cumberland and this part of the Alleghenies is impressive, but then again, coal made a lot of it possible.

Lock Keeper’s 75 House

I was surprised to read that some of the lock houses along the canal still had people living in them into the 1960s before it became a National Park.

Cumberland Notch

The notch gets quite narrow but they manage to get a rail line, a tow path and road in there, and some businesses in wider parts of the notch.

Downtown

Better color this year riding along the rail trail in late October then November 2 years ago. I find the notch in the distance to be such an interesting back drop.
