North Country farmers face difficult fall harvest | NCPR News

Oct 16, 2019 β€” At a time when many North Country farmers are struggling economically, they’ve also faced a tough growing season. There was a rainy spring, then a dry summer and back to a rainy fall. That’s taken a toll on the corn and hay crops farmers feed their livestock through the winter. It’s harvest time now, and many farmers are worried.

A 1,600-pound bull ventured on a short-lived quest for freedom Wednesday in West Baltimore, spending about three hours on the loose before finally succumbing to tranquilizers and being put back into the trailer whence he came.

If I hike up Hoyes Crest, I can say I’ve been to the highest point in Maryland at 3,360 feet. Driving up Spruce Knob will get me to the highest in West Viriginia at 4,862 feet, and then I just have to hit Meyersdale PA to hike up Mount Davis to hit the highest part of Pennsylvania 3,213 feet.

This weekend we head down to move the bulls off of the cows and end the breeding season on the ranch. After a rain delay, we are struck with good luck and bad as life on the ranch continues the only way it knows how.
