Burnt-Rossman State Forest ๐Ÿ“

Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest, spanning an impressive 10,588 acres, proudly holds the distinction of being Schoharie County’s largest state forest. This natural haven has garnered immense popularity among enthusiasts of outdoor pursuits such as hiking, camping, and various recreational activities.

Traversing a segment of this expansive landscape is the Long Path, a trail adorned with aqua blazes, stretching over 350 miles. Within this forest, the Eminence Lean To stands as a notable point of interest along the Long Path, positioned roughly 0.5 miles to the east of Old Cemetery Road. A crossing of Old Cemetery Road can be spotted just to the south of an ancient burial ground.

Among the captivating features of the forest are the campsites discreetly nestled along Betty Brook Road, as well as the inviting spots found at Duck Pond, situated along Burnt Hill Road.

For those with a penchant for angling and boating, Looking Glass Pond, located along Rossman Hill Road, offers an inviting prospect. This charming pond not only facilitates fishing and boating but also boasts well-maintained fishing platforms courtesy of the Fulton Fish and Game Club.

January 11, 2023 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. As Macías once played during his Christmas Day rock and roll concert in the stadium, Those were the Days. Talk about pure evil in a rather hilarious way redefining a song.

Partly cloudy and 22 degrees in Delmar. โ›… Calm wind. What you might expect for a January morning but doesn’t feel really cold because it’s not and there is no wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

A pretty sunrise ๐ŸŒ… for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ though I’m running a few minutes late so I’m walking briskly but it feels good. Got to get my steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ in although so far this week I’ve successful at that. As I know to well if I fail my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ will know and report it to me and I’ll be deemed an object failure who is obese and eats too much dairy. ๐Ÿฎ

Feeling better today, I think I was cold last night because it was a cold evening. โ„๏ธ I could turn up the heat, but once I was in bed under my heated blanket for a few minutes, I was plenty warm and left it for the balance of the night at the lowest setting. The heated blanket ๐Ÿ›Œ is still a lot cheaper then turning up the heat.

Today will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 34 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 17 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.โ„

Caught another two mouseys last night ๐Ÿ in the trap. Fished them out, wrapped in some paper and tossed them outside in with the rest of the burnables. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Works for me. So far I’m happy with the trap. It is doing it’s job, though I am not sure how many more mice there are to catch. I’ll dump out the water out back when it starts to stink. Trap: 3. Mousey: 0. Now I’ll have to patch that mouse hole again in the wall.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.6° from the due south horizon (-45.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Sun angle is finally starting to increase a notable amount. Another sign of the coming days. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:58 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:43 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:13 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:49 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 26 seconds over today.

After work I promise myself I will go to the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘” I am running out of shirts to wear to work at this point. But it’s good as I know what I will need for the weekend and next week, and by washing my dress clothes they’ll be ready when I come home on Monday from camping.

Tonight will have a chance of snow, mainly after 3am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 21st. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1968.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 33. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 36. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I’ll take it. Figuring only a few days ago they were predicting super shitty. I’ll take it as NYE sucked this year. I think I have a nice plan, with some hiking and enjoying some starry nights for Kings Weekend planned out.

Looking ahead for y’all honey lovers, next Wednesday is Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ when the sun will be setting at 4:52 pm with dusk at 5:21 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 34 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1973. I like honey especially on my pancakes ๐Ÿฅž.

January 10, 2023 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar for the evening walk. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The moon ๐ŸŽ‘ is rising on this starry evening. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธCold by recent standards.

Today was everything I expected it to be. ๐Ÿ’ผ Busy for a while then quiet during the Governor’s speech. I thought it ordinary for the times we live in. Still ambitious climate change plans, it will be fascinating how it all works out. Went to a public hearing on yet another development proposed in the Albany Pine Bush. ๐ŸŒฒ it was everything you expected, the decision was made in advance. I get tired of being such a looser all the time but if nobody objects nobody will listen. Rushing out to the bus I left my headphones on my desk at home. ๐ŸŽง I normally swap between two sets so one is always charged, but I managed with the set I had at my desk.

This evening I’m feeling chilled โ„. I think we stood outside talking too long after that meeting and my suit and tie isn’t that warm even with the wool overcoat. But I was cold after I got on the bus ๐Ÿš and when I got home. I know the COVID has been going around Albany, hopefully I don’t have it. I’ve been wearing my muzzle and I’m boosted but I had that work holiday party ๐ŸŽ‰ and mom’s birthday after that. I’ll have hot coca โ˜• and hop under the heated blanket when I get home from the walk.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ with a low of 19 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. North wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 3 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 85% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:03 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:25 am in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:10 am with sun in the southeast (128ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 39 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 21 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 34 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 17 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.โ„ Before my time.

After work tomorrow I’ll drive down to the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘• That way I’ll have the clothes I will need for the coming week and weekend. Then be set maybe for next too as I wear different clothes for session days then ordinary days.

The weekend forecast keeps improving โ˜€ though it’s going to be seasonably cold. But I’m excited about the chance to get out of town for the long weekend. I often feel so trapped in the winter. โ„

In four weeks on February 7 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (250ยฐ) at 5:17 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 34 minutes and 57 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 26 and 10 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 16 degrees. The record high of 48 degrees was set back in 2005.

Looking ahead, Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is a month away, Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ is in 7 weeks, First Day of Spring ๐Ÿ’ฎ is in 10 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ is in 11 weeks, 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 months, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 4 months, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 23 weeks, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 25 weeks, World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง is in 26 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 29 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 8 months, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ is in 42 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 44 weeks, Election Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 44 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 47 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 11 months and Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 50 weeks.

Did you see ten weeks until calendar spring? ๐ŸŒท I know that they were talking about the compressed budget schedule this year with the new governor, at least on paper. April will be here before you know it though calendar ๐Ÿ—“ spring comes about a week quicker. I am still expecting colder winter weather to eventually arrive though come February.

New York has an in-migration problem, not an out-migration problem

New York has an in-migration problem, not an out-migration problem

New York State is home Ellis Island the first stop to coming to New York State historically. People come to New York State first after immigrating from overseas. Our state is a state of immigrants, not a state of long-time residents. Refugees come to our state seeking safety. New York has long been the place where people come to get a foothold in America, make some money, and then leave.

It is foolish to think the state can stop out-migration. The weather sucks in New York. It’s cold and snowy. The taxes are high, the government policies draconian and backwards. But it is a state that is famous for being welcoming to immigrants and downtrodden. The state benefits with immigrant that moves in, as not only do they contribute to the economy, they come attached with billions in federal funding.

The state should push for as many refugees and immigrants as possible to make our state their first choice. And not just downstate — immigrants could do much to revitalize our Upstate cities, which often have significant amounts of vacant housing and buildings that could be their next stop on their journey to build a better life.

January 10, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Cloudy with snow flurries and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It is State of the State Day in Albany, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝ‍๐Ÿ’ผ the day of the year I always take the local to work to avoid the traffic and get off the bus five feet from the door of my office and head straight upstairs to avoid the protestor half of which probably have the COVID, which the politicians don’t talk about anymore.

Today will have patchy rain and snow showers before 9am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 14th. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2016. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 1984.โ„

The Rhinne Trap caught one mouse ๐Ÿญ though somehow I was hoping to catch more in one night. Somehow I find it hard to believe there is only one mouse. I know how this shit goes. But I didn’t hear any this morning. Easy enough I dumped it out with the water ๐Ÿ’ฆ outside. Seems wasteful with the water, I might try next time to fish out the mouse rather than dump the full bucket. Or may put less water in the bucket. I know some people use anti-freeze and similar substance so the water doesn’t get nasty if you don’t get rid of the mouse right away, but I’m not really into dumping anti-freeze in the woods, even if I’m no greeny. ๐Ÿ’š

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.4° from the due south horizon (-45.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:57 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:41 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:12 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:48 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 22 seconds over today.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 17 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 11th. North wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 3 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968.

Been working on FreeCodeCamp again. ๐Ÿค– I was a bit tired of some of the classes for a while, but I am deep into the D3 module again. I probably should try to make more time to do it and go back and finish the data libraries class projects but I don’t really like it much.

Seems like the holiday weekend is improving. ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I am more worried about snow and ice on Saturday heading out then anything else during the weekend. Saturday, a decreasing chance of rain before 1pm, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 35. For the King’s Day, sunny heading up to forty. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

As it stands it would be a good weekend to head out of town. โ›บ Where exactly to go is up in the air, the lack of snow opens up some various options. Might be muddy or icy in the higher elevations though. I still like the idear of Madison County, and hiking around the various roads of the Horse Camp on the weekend with binoculars and probably microspikes, but I am still worried about the roads being icy driving out there. I could do NY 8 again, or maybe Rensselearville State Forest, but I’m kind of bored with camping there, and I might be back out there for Presidents Weekend. I want some good snow, to ski and winter camp again. Another option, is that campsite at Burnt-Rossman that isn’t far off the road, but my only concern with that is I prefer to have cell service, as it makes the long nights go by faster, especially as my portable radio is broken as I usually just stream radio programs.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน when the sun will be setting at 5:21 pm with dusk at 5:49 pm. By then, things will be warming up a bit with average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. Although that’s still cooler then it’s been lately. I still think the hot weather will break down before too long.
