Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest, spanning an impressive 10,588 acres, proudly holds the distinction of being Schoharie County’s largest state forest. This natural haven has garnered immense popularity among enthusiasts of outdoor pursuits such as hiking, camping, and various recreational activities.
Traversing a segment of this expansive landscape is the Long Path, a trail adorned with aqua blazes, stretching over 350 miles. Within this forest, the Eminence Lean To stands as a notable point of interest along the Long Path, positioned roughly 0.5 miles to the east of Old Cemetery Road. A crossing of Old Cemetery Road can be spotted just to the south of an ancient burial ground.
Among the captivating features of the forest are the campsites discreetly nestled along Betty Brook Road, as well as the inviting spots found at Duck Pond, situated along Burnt Hill Road.
For those with a penchant for angling and boating, Looking Glass Pond, located along Rossman Hill Road, offers an inviting prospect. This charming pond not only facilitates fishing and boating but also boasts well-maintained fishing platforms courtesy of the Fulton Fish and Game Club.
Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Rise and grind on this Tuesday. I don’t know but I think thr synchronousizer is a bit worn out on second gear. ⚙ I woke up and was like darn still only Tuesday, let’s git r dun.
Mostly cloudy with some clearing to the south at the freezing point. 🌥 There is a light southwest breeze at 3 mph. 🍃. There are 7 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌡️
Nice morning today especially to the south 🌅, with lots of red. I was actually out walking 🚶 before 6:45 which is unusual for me on these dark mornings but it helped that I had the left over pancakes 🥞 and sausage and coffee ☕ from yesterday that I could just reheat. Fewer calories, time saved, and less trash – what’s not to like?
That said, I think I’m going to put a fruit bowl 🍐 🍏 in my office so mid-morning if I’m hungry or feeling a bit light headed I can have a bit to eat. One of the reasons I’ve been doing the big breakfasts – besides availability and not wanting to waste 🗑 – is sometimes I feel light headed by lunch time. I can always keep an extra container to bring home the banana 🍌 peels and apple rins for compost.
The communications line the came down yesterday 📞 still hasn’t been repaired. I assumed it was a copper cable line abandoned by the telephone company but it looks like fiber as there is no wires in the cable. I bet there are unhappy customers but it doesn’t impact me as the police officer 👮 tossed it off the road and sidewalk. I’ve noticed most of the underground 🚇 copper phone repeaters locally have been smashed and grabbed for their copper. Apparently Verizon doesn’t use them or care any more and copper is valuable as scrap. I guess it’s recycling ♻.
Today will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 37 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. West wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 20 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1999. 7.6 inches of snow fell back in 1948.❄
Ironing my muzzle and shirt 🕴️showering 🚿 and it’s off to work. Probably another busy day ahead.

The record low of -12 occurred back in 1963.
Going to snow 🌨 again tomorrow but only an inch or two, so whatever the buses 🚍 will be running. Probably won’t last for long especially with rain and warmer conditions expected come Thursday. Should help clean up the sidewalks the rain, assuming it doesn’t freeze up to black ice. Hopefully the town will plow again today and lay down some salt.
Cloudyand mild for the weekend. 🌥 Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. Sunday, cloudy, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I’m still undecided about the weekend though I need to decide today if I can want a personal day come Friday m
Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Valentines Day ❤️ when the sun will be setting at 5:27 pm with dusk at 5:54 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 28 and 15 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.

I’m surprised as anyone that we got as much snow 🌨 as we did. It’s winter though but after being so mild and snow free since mid December it was kind of a shock 🤯 for a change. I thought it was going to be more of a rain event. At least I didn’t need my umbrella for the evening commute. I was fine leaving it home.
While there was some snow on the sidewalks and a few icy patches, they weren’t bad for the evening walk 🚶. Made pasta for dinner 🍲 but I enforced the one bowl, eat only until I’m full rule and save the rest in the refrigerator. I won’t call it a diet but like everything with inflation I’m trying to tighten my belt. I don’t want to be cheap and miserable but I do want to build a good future 🔮 for myself in all aspects of life. 40 is such a critical age, to really set yourself on the right step to the future.
Dug out my truck and cleaned off the solar panel ☀ so things will get charged up hopefully starting tomorrow and I’ll be ready the next time I need to drive somewhere like the dentist on Friday or maybe sooner if I need groceries especially if I decide to go camping 🏕 for my birthday. You never know it might be fun, especially if there is snow for skiing.
Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 7% illuminated. The Snow ❄ Moon is on Sunday, February 5. The darkest hour is at 12:08 am, followed by dawn at 6:48 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:19 am in the east-southeast (116°) and last for 3 minutes and 14 seconds. In four weeks on February 20 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (256°) at 5:34 pm,🌄 which is 36 minutes and 22 seconds later then tonight. That’s it? Ugh. Although at least by then the evening commute won’t be so dark. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny skies and temperatures between 28 and 13 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 37 and 19 degrees. The record high of 66 degrees was set back in 1930.

Good morning! Snow and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ There is a north breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌡️
Out for the morning walk 🚶, the snow is quite wet and sloppy. Sticking to my boots it’s would seem. Sidewalks are plowed which helps. But it’s still pretty wet and slushy. There was a either a telephone or cable line that came down on Elm Avenue this morning, there was already a police officer directing traffic around it, 🚨 but I stayed well away from it, just because you never know how much voltage it could have. If it’s a telephone wire, it could be as much as 90 volts when ringing, and I don’t know how much voltage is used for cable lines, or if they are all fiber optic at this point. I don’t own a TV or have internet at home, so I don’t know what’s up and down. Kind of sucks for people though who plan to work from home.
Today will snow before 2pm, then rain and snow likely. 🌧 High of 35 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 14th. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1906. 10.6 inches of snow fell back in 1963.❄
Maybe it was mistake to leave my umbrella home. ☂ I did plan on bringing it but I was already on my way down to the bus stop 🚏 when I realized I didn’t pack it with my lunch. Not a big deal, but I am hoping the snow doesn’t turn to rain and it’s wet by evening. That said, it seems like it will be clearing as the day progresses. Another mild night ahead, which is good, because you know how much I love to pay for heat.
Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 27.9° from the due south horizon (-42.9° vs. 6/21). Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 44 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over today.
I’ve decided to continue on my journey through more-mindful eating, 🍽 which means eating only when I’m hungry and not stuffing my face when I’m already full. Walking is great, but it doesn’t necessary translate to lost weight, nor does it save money. If I try to be more careful on how much I eat, then I can stretch food further, 🍎 put more away in the freezer to eat a later date. Might not add up to a lot 💰 but with inflation, you really have to stretch every dollar as far as it can go. Plus less food consumed means less food packaging to burn or take to the transfer station, which is better for the environment. 🌎 Kind of a win-win for a better tomorrow. Little things, done over a decade, can really add up. Worse thing is that it seems like the veggies and fruit get eaten up before I’m ready to shop, but I can buy more.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 27 degrees at 11pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 10pm; Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -17 occurred back in 1948.
Maybe my fears of having to walk home in the rain with an umbrella are overblown. 🌧 That’s good, as it should be good for walking tonight, assuming the sidewalks aren’t too icy. I don’t know how late I’ll get home tonight, but I don’t think it will be super late.
Another mild and cloudy weekend ahead. ☁️ Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I would like to get out of town this weekend for Friday into the weekend, but I want to give it one more day to decide what my plans are for sure, as if looks cloudy I might hold off. 🌲🌲 But it would be fun for my 40th birthday.
Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 🦋 when the sun will be setting at 5:16 pm with dusk at 5:44 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 36 and 12 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 55 back in 1991.
Good evening! Snow showers and 33 degrees in Delmar. ❄ Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. ☃
I went for my evening walk 🚶 right after I got home from my parents house as I was sure it would rain this evening. But it looks like we got a dusting of snow 🌨 though it didn’t really start until around 8. Still not much. Mom was pushing me to leave early after lunch due to the snow but it just kept getting pushed back in start time.
Tonight will snow. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 Low of 31 degrees at 11pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 11 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.
It’s winter, it snows. 🌨 Worse comes to worse I won’t be able to do my morning walk before work but that’s fine. Chances are that it won’t be that much snow and the sidewalk plows will be out early. Bus 🚍 runs regardless. It’s nice living in the city.
Tonight will have a New 🌚 Moon with 2% illuminated. The Snow ❄ Moon is on Sunday, February 5. The darkest hour is at 12:08 am, followed by dawn at 6:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:19 am in the east-southeast (117°) and last for 3 minutes and 14 seconds. Sunrise is 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:02 am with sun in the southeast (124°).Tonight will have 14 hours and 19 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 59 seconds over last night.
I’ve decided I’m going to try to become a more conscious eater, 🍲 as I think my calorie intake is too high now that I’m getting older. I already eat a lot of veggies and fruits and I don’t do fast food but I’m guilty as anyone of stuffing my face when I get home from work. I often make up too much food and rather than freezing it I stuff my face. I do walk a lot and I want to be full but not to extent it makes me sick. Improving my physical health and losing a bit of weight needs to be part of Mission Fifty.
Tomorrow will snow before 2pm, then rain and snow likely. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌧 High of 35 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 9th. North wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1906. 10.6 inches of snow fell back in 1963.❄
It’s going to be so mild that I can’t image the snow will cause too many problems. 🤷♂️ I don’t think they’ll close the office downtown 🏢 or that things will be that bad on the roads. I have my dress boots to wear with my suit and tie. Works well keeps my feet dry until I get into the office and put my comfortable loafers on. 👞

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Cloudy around the freezing point for the morning walk down to the town park this morning. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. ☃ The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 pm.
Another chilly, cold and gray day 🌫️. I think with the rain coming and all of the rain we’ve had lately it makes it extra cold. Maybe I’m just chilled through due to the heat being kept low where I live. But the calories burnt while walking 🚶 should warm me up a bit.
I didn’t sleep well last night 🛏 mainly because I was in bed by seven 7⃣ because it was cold, dark and damp last night and had no reason to stay up later. Ended up waking up in the middle of the night and listening to podcasts under the warmth of the electric blanket. With inflation, I’d rather cut the lights early and keep the heat as low as possible.
Today will have a chance of rain after 5pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 21st. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1906. 12.9 inches of snow fell back in 1987.❄
Usually I do Bennett Hill ⛰ on a Sunday but with the snow 🌨 coming I think I want to try to get out to the folks house for Sunday lunch 🥩 a bit earlier and it looks like there is a fair amount of snow out there. Might be difficult to get my steps 👣 in today without hiking the mountain or the evening walk. If it snows this evening then walking will be fine but I’m not sure if I will walk in the rain ☔.
Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 27.7° from the due south horizon (-43.1° vs. 6/21). Tonight will rain and snow. 🌧 Low of 31 degrees at 6am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 11 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1970.
Won’t impact me much even if we do get some snow 🌨. I got those dressy boots 🕴️that I wear with my suit and tie. The bus 🚍 will running. Maybe it will impact my morning walk but only if it’s rain not snow. Can’t control the weather only my attitude.
Next Sunday before dawn I will become a officially a quadragenarian. I figure the news loves to talk about octragenarians so I can use my proper prefix too. 🎂 I’m actually thinking about taking a personal day on Friday after my dentist cleaning 🪥and heading out to the woods for two nights. ⛺ Depends on how much snow there is and how cold. I can always pop on remotely from camp to work on Friday afternoon if need be if things are busy.
So yes, next Sunday is 40th Birthday 🎉 when the sun will be setting at 5:06 pm with dusk at 5:34 pm. On that day in 2022, we had very cold weather, partly sunny and temperatures between 14 and 0 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.
I can pour over spreadsheets and try to figure out everything for age 50 🤔 but I know not all the answers are apparent now. But I know choices now are particularly important, as everything you do compounds as time goes by. I’m well aware of this being a decade of enormous change but it’s one I should embrace and do what is right for me. Browsing catalogues and learning is largely free so I should take advantage of it as much as possible. 🧑🏫 Try to get out of my comfort zone more. Eat a little less.
The trend looks much colder for February ❄ but the good news is we are heading towards spring. We’ve had an exceptionally warm January and at some point the pattern had to change. Spring will arrive. 🌷
Good afternoon! Mostly cloudy and 34 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. ☁ There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. There is a inch of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. ☃️
Kind of a cold and gray Saturday. ☁️ There is just enough of a breeze this afternoon to make it rather unpleasant out. I started the day out the library, doing some research and playing with R Studio 🤖 specifically as it relates to urban planning data from the Census Bureau. I am continuing to learn more about the Census and it’s data both for a practical perspective and so I can develop skills for my future. It’s good to know what data is out there, so I can whip up some quick code and get some data out to clients who need it. Plus it’s a great way to fill space on the blog.
This afternoon will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 35 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 9th. Northwest wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2006. 7.2 inches of snow fell back in 1990.❄
The plan for this afternoon is to bundle up and get some exercise by walking out to Five Rivers. 🐸 It’s a cold and gray, nasty day but I always like walking out along Meads Road, seeing the cows 🐄 and then observing nature at Five Rivers, followed by hiking back along Fisher Boulevard. This way I don’t have to worry about walking along the road as dusk approaches. 🌆 Plus it’s a great chance to get caught up on podcasts.
Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 27.4° from the due south horizon (-43.4° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 55 seconds over yesterday.
Also been continuing to run the numbers 🔢 and think about my Mission Fifty Plan. I think my financial plan as it stands is fairly secure, though having to replace my truck in a year or two will have a temporary dip, though I don’t plan to have something has a fancy or nice for my next truck. Thinking small, though I do want a truck cap for camping. I kind of like the Toyota Tacomas, as they are easier to drive and park, though I might consider another regular cap-short bed Silverado if it means I can reuse my cap. The other thing I’ve been thinking about is how to get more involved and knowledgeable about homesteading and off-grid living — I should look for events and classes to participate in. I am also thinking about taking a class in welding. 👩🏭 A lot though should involve stay the course.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 23 degrees at 2am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 5th. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1984.
Looking, there are 3 weeks until Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 when the sun will be setting at 5:23 pm with dusk at 5:50 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 26 and 12 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1981. Do mop up milk though, as it kind of stinks when spoiled, but maybe compost those milk-soaked paper towels, as it’s good fertilizer.
David Crosby, the “young rock n’ roller”, in words of Pete Seeger, who through the Byrds made Ecclesiastics 3 famous passed away recently.
Eccelesiastics 3 has a word in it you might not be familiar with — “to rend”.
Rend is a word that has fallen out of popularity since the 1960s, but it means to violently tear apart something like a country, often in a sorrowful fashion.
You might say the “American Civil War rend the United States”.
