Junius Pond Unique Area
Junius Ponds was carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago, are meromictic, meaning that the pond waters do not mix. This unique characteristic has led to an abundance of rare plants and animals, including the endangered bog turtle.
The combined 200 acres over two parcels, near Waterloo Premium Outlets and the Junius Ponds Rest Area on the Thruway, once was the water supply for Lyon, but had been abandoned by the town, which transferred it to the state for conservation purposes.
