While at times when the sun comes out I dream about being up north, truth be told, today isn’t a particularly nice day — either here or int he Adirondacks

The routine software update may be one of the most familiar and least understood parts of our digital lives. A pop-up window announces its arrival and all that is required of us is to plug everything in before bed. The next morning, rather like the shoemaker and the elves, our software is magically transformed.
Last spring, a Texas-based company called SolarWinds made one such software update available to its customers. It was supposed to provide the regular fare — bug fixes, performance enhancements — to the company's popular network management system, a software program called Orion that keeps a watchful eye on all the various components in a company's network. Customers simply had to log into the company's software development website, type a password and then wait for the update to land seamlessly onto their servers.
The routine update, it turns out, is no longer so routine.
Hackers believed to be directed by the Russian intelligence service, the SVR, used that routine software update to slip malicious code into Orion's software and then used it as a vehicle for a massive cyberattack against America.

Songs and calls of some New York State birds
Starting to clear
April 17, 2021 Morning
Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Two weeks to May π . Overcast, cold and gray around 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. β Maybe a few breaks of sun π₯ but hardly a banner day. There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. π. No snow locally, but certainly kind of a gray and cloudy day. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.
Today will be mostly cloudy π₯, with a high of 53 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. Northwest wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2002. 0.3 inches of snow fell back in 1965.β
While not the greatest day after π₯ it looks like it is relatively dry and will be warm enough later on to go out to Five Rivers for some bird watching π¦ and wildlife observation. πΈ Been working on learning my bird calls better so I can spot the birdies without seeing them first. Not sure with the clouds, cool condition and breeze though I’ll see all that much.
I think I made the right decision to stay in town this weekend, π‘ even thought I would have liked to gotten out of town. Next weekend though will be probably the last week without many black flies π in the Adirondacks, although if they are bad out come I can use the screen tent. πͺ Next week looks better, although who knows it looks like we are heading to a cold and damp late April in long range. π§ πΊ When there is no hope, there is spring. Before you know it we will have 80 degree days and the muggers will be back. πβοΈ I guess rain is good in the sense it reduces the fire risk, but none of this clouds and no sky pee-pee, please.
Solar noon π is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 58° from the due south horizon (-12.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 7:02 pm with the sun in the west (279°). πΈ
The sunset is in the west-northwest (285°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:40 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:09 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. π At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter π Moon in the west-southwest (256°) at an altitude of 52° from the horizon, 247,967 miles away. π The best time to look at the stars is after 8:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies β and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy π₯, with a low of 37 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 15th. Light north wind. In 2020, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1948.
I am watching the weekend forecast π for next week, and while it looks a bit too promising at this point — usually a sunny weekend forecast turns to rain over the next 6 days — I am hopeful, and these days, one can only have hope for a better future. Maybe I can go north or west after my therapy session, as the days have gotten longer and I can buy wood so I have what I need for a fire π₯ or maybe leave early Saturday, hike πΆβοΈ then camp. π I would kind of like to do the hiking option, kind of interested in exploring Pine Orchard, although I might want my muck boots with the mud being as deep as it likely is this time of year. π’
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until May π when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. It’s coming, note the black flies. π On that day in 2020, we had rain showers, partly sunny and temperatures between 61 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001. We could certainly hit 80 degrees before that, although with the current weather pattern that seems unlikely.
