A state Senate supermajority could force NY leftward | CSNY
The Empire State is on course to move even more to the political left just two years after Democrats won control of both houses of the state Legislature for the first time in a decade. The 40-member Democratic conference only needs to flip two Republican-held seats in the 63-member state Senate to achieve a two-thirds supermajority to accompany their existing one in the Assembly. No party has done that for at least a century. If it happens in 2020, New York could join California, Rhode Island and Hawaii as one of the states where Democrats have a governor in office and two-thirds of the seats in both houses of the state Legislature.
A state Senate supermajority for Democrats would certainly change the political landscape of Albany. Republicans would be more irrelevant in state politics than ever if they lose key races this year in Western New York, Long Island and the Hudson Valley. There would also be implications for the balance of power between the state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, since a supermajority can override a governor’s veto. Democrats would also control legislative redistricting because the current system allows a two-thirds majority of the state Legislature to have final approval of any redistricting plans created by a 10-person bipartisan commission.๏ฟฝ
October 26, 2020 Morning
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Despite the dark morning, I’m up and going. ๐ง๏ธ I think it’s a pay week, so good motivation to get going. ๐ต Plus next week we get to sleep ๐ด in one more hour with the time change. ๐ Five weeks to Cyber Monday ๐๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐. Rain showers and 40 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ง๏ธ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 8 pm. โ๏ธ
Kind of a chilly, wet morning but I woke up early and got some coffee โ going. A very dark for one more Monday until we set the clock back for extra daylight in the morning but very dark evenings ๐ ahead. Happens every year. That’s called changing the way time, something all the cranks hate but I don’t like going to work in the dark. ๐ฎ I had to walk to the store this morning to get milk ๐ฅ for the coffee. One benefit to living in the land of the suburbanite.
It’s a rainy morning โ with the drizzle but I’m out for my morning walk๐ถโโ๏ธbecause I didn’t get out last night. One advantage to walking in the rain, no joggers ๐งโโ๏ธto run you over.
Soon I expect to be working downtown every day, so on days I don’t have to wear my suit ๐จ๐ปโ๐ผ, I hope to be taking the express bus ๐ downtown. The walk to the park and ride ๐helps to clear my mind. Plus, it’s a one stop trip from the Park and Ride to the Emperors Plaza. ๐ On a nice day, the views of the mountains and Plaza are nice.

Solar noon ๐ is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 34.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-36.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). Back in 1970, Muhammad Ali faces off against Jerry Quarry in Atlanta, Georgia for the first time after Ali’s three-year hiatus from evading to be drafted in the Vietnam War. ๐ฅGood for him, the Vietnam War was evil ๐.
A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 48. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 54 degrees.
I am looking at the weekend forecast ๐ญ ๐ but the real question ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ is when will the rain and snow ๐จ depart on Friday and how truly cold โ will it be for camping if I go out to Brookfield and do some small game hunting ๐ฟ ๐ซ and enjoying the woods. ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฒ
One month ๐ from now will be Thanksgiving ๐ฆ when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:56 pm (Standard Time).

Twice a week, mathematics professor Andrea Bruder squats in the sewage tunnels below South Hall, a mostly freshman dorm at Colorado College. She wears head-to-toe protective gear, and holds a plastic ladle in one hand and a to-go coffee cup in the other. Bruder hovers above an opening in a large metal pipe, and patiently waits for a student to flush.
That flush will flood the pipes with just enough water to carry human waste down to her ladle, then to her coffee cup and eventually to a lab for processing.
