Americans harbor strong fear of new infections
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Strong concern about a second wave of coronavirus infections is reinforcing widespread opposition among Americans to reopening public places, a new poll finds, even as many state leaders step up efforts to return to life before the pandemic.
Yet support for public health restrictions imposed to control the virus’s spread is no longer overwhelming. It has been eroded over the past month by a widening partisan divide, with Democrats more cautious and Republicans less anxious as President Donald Trump urges states to “open up our country,” according to the new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
It's probably quite reasonable to be concerned about the second wave as 13 of the 14 respiratory pandemics have had second waves, usually more severe than the first, according to the Skeptics Guide to the Universe. But life must also go on because life is short and shouldn't be wasted. Take reasonable precautions but move forward.

Despite the obnoxious Eastern Towhee waking me up early… π¦
Today is an incredibly nice day and waking up early got me out before the crowds so I could enjoy the fresh air on my morning. Tons of birds out back and it’s going to be a nice day.
I’m thankful for beautiful spring and autumn days
I’m thankful for…
Beautiful sunny mornings in the spring time and autumn with my windows open, listening to the birds chirping, green grass and blue skies. As they won’t be here forever as winter will eventually return.
May 21, 2020 Morning
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Sunny and 44 degrees in Delmar, NY. π Calm wind. Cool start to the day but a nice one this morning. I’m going to head out for my morning walk πΆ shortly and get the day started. Already had a big pan π³ of eggs and bacon, and of coffee β.
Tomorrow at this time β I plan to already be in the city beyond the pines, Schenectady, π²π²π²π²π and well on my way to the Adirondacks. I’d like to be to camp by 8:30 and at least have a table set up and power cords run by the time I clock in a nine. I will bring a dress shirt and an old blazer to toss over my t shirt and Permethrin sprayed jeans πwith my office background picture for any Zoom meetings I may have during the day. πΉ Bird noises and gun shots in the background during the meeting? The chimes of freedom. π₯Must be because the windows are open. π¦ I may make a second pot of coffee this morning β and refrigerate it for tomorrow for a better jump start.
I am done with the doxycycline again πbut I’m shit scared of ticks. That’s why I am bathing myself in chemicals hoping to avoid the next biting. π I know that the black flies will be insane up north but they only work during the daytime hours and hopefully the screen to tent will work along with the DEET, PMD and Picardin and clotheses covered by Permethrin.
Today will be sunny π, with a high of 76 degrees at 4pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 7th. Light south wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Another beautiful day.π Better put sunscreen on my truckers arm from working in my truck. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1941. There was a dusting of snow in 1895.β
Today I will work down at the laundromat π midday then later get groceries and gas for camping. It should be a nice day as long as I don’t make my shotgun arm any more crispy from working in the truck. I was pushing 75 watts out of the panel for a good portion of the day charging both my personal and work laptops.π
Next week I am expecting one of those reflective wind shield screens that I ordered, mainly because I’m working in my truck office and it gets hot. π Plus I tend to now camp in sunnier campsites so I can have the solar power for the battery π bank. The cooler I keep my truck the better especially if my coolers are up there. Back to two coolers now – one for beer and cold cuts and the other for real cold stuff now that summer is here.
Solar noon π is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.7Β° from the due south horizon (-3.1Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 7:37 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (292Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west-northwest (299Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:18 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 8:50 pm, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 9:33 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies π and temperatures around 68 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 48 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be clear π, with a low of 50 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 24th. South wind 6 to 8 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 2002.
Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. π Saturday, a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 57 at 10am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 48 at 6pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.
It looks like the forecast is better up north. βΊ That said, following weekend looks rain
