Almost Taste This Picture

A few weeks back I was driving through Madison County smelling what you normally smell in farm country – dirt, mud, manure and fermented grain. Farmers hauling out their hundredth load of manure and bed pack from the barnyard, recycling the rich organic matter back into the earth so it can grow more corn and silage, more hay and alfalfa for high quality forages that power that cows thar make the milk and the steaks and the beef we all enjoy.

Dairy country has its smells especially during the fall and spring when fallow fields are rejuvenated with nutrients which help them grow. Fresh slurry can particularly tickle ones nose. But the smells of the working land represents a rural life sustained, a land put to use, a healthy and diverse habitat that remains largely open and green.

Why Americaโ€™s New Apartment Buildings All Look the Same

Why Americaโ€™s New Apartment Buildings All Look the Same

These buildings are in almost every U.S. city. They range from three to seven stories tall and can stretch for blocks. They’re usually full of rental apartments, but they can also house college dorms, condominiums, hotels, or assisted-living facilities. Close to city centers, they tend toward a blocky, often colorful modernism; out in the suburbs, their architecture is more likely to feature peaked roofs and historical motifs. Their outer walls are covered with fiber cement, metal, stucco, or bricks.

They really are everywhere, I discovered on a cross-country drive last fall, and they’re going up fast. In 2017, 187,000 new housing units were completed in buildings of 50 units or more in the U.S., the most since the Census Bureau started keeping track in 1972. By my informal massaging of the data, well over half of those were in blocky mid-rises.

May 7, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ•! Been so cold fewer flowers ๐ŸŒท then normal this time of year but still quite nice. Sunny and 51 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. A beautiful morning. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Saturday around morning. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Beautiful morning. โ˜บ. Started my day with a nice walk ๐Ÿšถ around the super block and then I’m planning to work outside most of the day. ๐Ÿ’ผ Maybe go down to the library books ๐Ÿ“š where I can work with the faster internet and upload new stuff to the site blog. ๐ŸŒธ

Feeling quite well now ๐Ÿ’Š with the doxycycline doing its magic. Aches and soreness in my legs are mostly home not as tired ๐Ÿ˜ด. Lyme disease sucks. Heck even my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ autocomplete knows that now. I was told that the reason I was so much more tired and sick from the doxycycline this time was the Lyme disease infection was recent and the disease was much more of a fight. Pretty good now but still a bit sore.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. I’m thinking about going down to the Pepscanne Preserve ๐Ÿฆ this afternoon if the weather is nice. I really enjoy seeing all the birds down there and sitting out by the river especially on such a beautiful day. Then get groceries at Aldi’s and gas. โ›ฝ
