Essential Workers Plan May Day Strikes; Others Demand End To COVID-19 Lockdowns : Coronavirus Live Updates : NPR

Employees at many online retailers, grocery store chains and package-delivery services are planning labor actions Friday to protest what they describe as unsafe working conditions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, while others, put out of work by the disease, are using May Day to demand an end to stay-at-home orders they say are ruining livelihoods and irreparably harming the economy.

Meanwhile, nurses at scores of hospitals across the country plan to take to the streets to protest a lack of personal protective equipment; and independent truckers, fed up with low freight rates, plan a congestion-inducing "slow roll" in their rigs through parts of Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington and other major cities.

The May Day protests come as the country is on edge, with more than 1 million confirmed infections and some 63,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19 and after weeks of stay-at-home orders that have put a fifth of the nation's workforce out of a job, while employees deemed essential risk exposure to the novel coronavirus just by showing up to work.

Rent Is Due Today, But Millions Of Americans Won’t Be Paying : NPR

More than 30 million people have applied for unemployment as of April 30, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Many are falling behind on their rent and are being evicted, despite new rules designed to stop evictions. Experts say the moratoriums by state and local officials don't go far enough and are leaving tenants vulnerable.

"My main concern is that I'll be evicted," says David Perez. The self-employed father of one sells artisanal wares, like wallets and sandals, at a flea market in Elkridge, Md. "What's going to happen to my family?" National Activists Refuse To Pay Rent As New York Struggles With The Coronavirus Outbreak

Perez hasn't had any income since the end of February because the flea market closed, and he says that he and his 14-year-old daughter are living off food donated from his church. He has already lost his van because he couldn't make his monthly payments.

May 1, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy May ๐Ÿ•Š! Five weeks to 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ. Cloudy, gray but no rain and 58 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” Calm wind. The dew point is 53 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 pm. I am feeling somewhat better this morning, but I have a doctors appointment this afternoon so I hopefully then I’ll be feeling better after I get doxycycline or whatever I need for the tick bite.

I have a long list of things to do this morning from home, ๐Ÿ  and I ended up having to drive the library as my work laptop wasn’t working and apparently I had to connect to the wi-fi to get it up working again. ๐Ÿ’ป Things though are up and working again, which is good.

Today will have a chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 63 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 10am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:17 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:56 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:26 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (180ยฐ) at an altitude of 63ยฐ from the horizon, 228,988 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:05 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 60 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees.

It does sound like a nice weekend on tap ๐Ÿค  so I’m thinking about weekend plans. Maybe I’ll head out of town, but I better be real careful, as I don’t want to get sun burn or drink alcohol if I’m on medication for the Lyme. Plus who knows how sick I’ll be feeling this weekend or how bad the bugs will be. But on the other hand, I don’t want to miss a nice weekend, as the rest of the month may be rainy and miserable or things get shut down further. I’ll have to think about it some more.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be June ๐Ÿน when the sun will be setting at 8:26 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm.
