February 17, 2020 Morning
Good morning! Happy Presidents Day π΄! Or in the case of the federal government, Washington’s Birthday. Always a bit odd how the different governments declare different holidays for the sane day. Two weeks to Read Across America Day π. I really have made reading π a nightly priority of mine. Partly sunny and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. π. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β οΈThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. π‘οΈ
Washington’s Birthday will be sunny π, with a high of 35 degrees at 12pm. Typical weather for Washington’s Birthday. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. Lots of sun too. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1981. 11.9 inches of snow fell back in 2003.β
This afternoon I’m heading out to Rensselaerville to do some skiing. πBeen a long time since I’ve been out that way and it promises to be a real nice day. I’ll make sure to post some pictures and share my experience. Always pretty out there with the mountains and hills, plus the trails themselves aren’t that steep that you are likely to get speeding out of control even with my quite aggressive skis.
Solar noon π is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 35.3Β° from the due south horizon (-35.6Β° vs. 6/21). The golden hour π starts at 4:50 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (248Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west-southwest (254Β°) starting at 5:27 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 5:57 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 6:31 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies π and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 39 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have increasing clouds β, with a low of 23 degrees at 2am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 8th. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph after midnight. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1973.
A picture perfect weekend for next weekend on tap. π Saturday, sunny, with a high near 41. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees. I am definately thinking it’s possible that I could do a late winter camping trip somewhere — like Brookfield or may Route 8 in the Adirondacks if there isn’t too much snow and I can’t park. π I sure would love a nice night int he wilderness. I will evaluate once it gets closer — going to rain on Tuesday afternoon here, and that might really melt away a lot of snow, but it could leave very icy snow banks, making it even hard to find a place to park near where I would like to camp.
πΉπ»πΌOnly 31 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!πΉπ»πΌ
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Read Across America Day π when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. If the time had changed by then, and it was mild enough, I could be reading down at the park. Who knows though — a good spring thaw and I could be reading out back with the light in the evening. That sure would be nice. On that day in 2019, we had snow showers, cloudy and temperatures between 37 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 39 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 1991.
