Is Lab-Grown Meat Really Meat?

Is Lab-Grown Meat Really Meat?

After centuries of a veritable monopoly, meat might have finally met its match. The challenger arises not from veggie burgers or tofu or seitan, but instead from labs where animal cells are being cultured and grown up into slabs that mimic (or, depending on whom you ask, mirror) meat. It currently goes by many names—in-vitro meat, cultured meat, lab-grown meat, clean meat—and it might soon be vying for a spot in the cold case next to more traditionally made fare. To put it bluntly: the kind that comes from living animals, slaughtered for food.

Cultured-meat manufacturers like Just Inc. and Memphis Meats are hoping to provide consumers with meat that is just like its predecessor, that tastes and looks and feels and smells exactly the same as something you might get in stores today but will be more sustainable. Whether that will turn out to be true won’t be clear for some time. But there’s another, more immediate battle heating up between the cattle industry and these new entrants into the meaty ring. So buckle up and put on your wonkiest hat, because the labeling war is about to begin.

Fare box recoveries are so low, they might as well make it free.

It costs a lot of money to collect money, while most transit systems are heavily reliant on state and federal subsidies -- CDTA relies on 85 percent of it's revenue from sources besides fare boxes. Smaller systems recover even less from the fare box.

January 15, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Save the Pine Dinner 🦋! Yes it’s back on as they canceled the Guilderland Zoning Board of Appeals after Crossgates was told they would need state permits to shade out butterfly hill and kill an endangered species. Yeah, it’s shocking 😮 when the government does its job. Usually it rubber stamps the wealthy interests demands to destroy our environment while relentlessly punishing the colored and poor, all while professing to be not racist or bigoted. I believe tonight’s topic is something on the proposal to burn tires at LaFarge Cement put on Paul Tick amd Tina Liberman of Paul. ⚫ I remember years ago when some farmer was burning a pile of brush with a tire in Berne. 🔥 Stuff stinks with lots of black smoke, even for a farm, although I expect a cement plant would burn them a lot higher of a temperature. Maybe it’s one thing if you have a big ol’ farm in Iowa or South Dakota and a big pile of brush to burn rather than a big industrial plant in a fairly populated area in an air basin with frequent temperature inversions. At any rate, lasagna dinner at six o’clock 🍲 at the Westminster Presbyterian by the Empire Plaza. They always have good lasagana. Two weeks to 37th Birthday 🎉. My gawd I’ll be old then. Only three years until my fourth decade. Next year will mark two decades since I graduated 🎓 from high school 🚸. It should be good decade if I work hard every day for a better tomorrow. 🔮

It’s purty cloudy but mild at 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 pm. ☃️ Nice that it’s so warm, assuming we see the sun later on. But what do I dare under those florescent lights. Hey at least it’s a distraction free room and ny productivity is high.

Neighbor most have blown out the candle before bed or at least her bedroom didn’t catch on fire 🕯. Maybe my fear is irrational 😱 but I know how easy it is to accidentally set something on fire and I’ve burned my share of things over the years. 🔥 Fire is a remarkably dangerous thing, once things get hot and start to oxidize, things around them can oxidize too. It’s always so important to keep an eye on things when your burning them.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 1pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.2° from the due south horizon (-44.6° vs. 6/21). The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:03 pm with the sun in the southwest (234°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (242°) starting at 4:44 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:17 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies 🌃 and temperatures around 41 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 37 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be sleet likely, possibly mixed with rain and snow. Increasing clouds ❄, with a low of 33 degrees at 8pm. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 3rd. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected. Mostly just slop. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

People are asking why I’ve been taking so much about Iowa lately. 🚜 It all comes down to that article I saw last night on the Iowa State Auditor, Rob Sand, the state’s highest ranking Democrat and his decision not to endorse in the presidential race. 🦌 Good for him, no need to take sides. 🐴 Those deer he’s harvested and mounted in his office a beautiful. They have some really big deer in Iowa to say nothing of geese, turkey, coyote and other game species thanks to their amazing soils that grow more than corn 🌽 and feed more than pigs and cows. 🌾

Cool and sloppy this MLK weekend before the big freeze next week. ❄ Saturday, snow, mainly after 1pm. High near 30. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Sunday, snow showers likely, mainly before 7am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees. It might be above normal for the next few days, but then we plow into an arctic blast going into next week, although relatively speaking it’s not going to be the cold. At least my gas and electric bill was reasonable last year — $86 dollars. I’d prefer it to be back closer to $50 but that won’t happen until the heat is off for the season. And spring is coming. But I don’t think I’ll be camping out at least this weekend, and next weekend is the Pine Bush Hike. At least I’ll be saving money by staying home.

🌹🌻🌼Only 64 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 37th Birthday 🎉 when the sun will be setting at 5:04 pm with dusk at 5:34 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow and temperatures between 29 and 5 degrees. And lots of awful gun bills. At least this year I’ll get to go home at five o’clock this year. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.
