77 WABC-1965 Northeast Blackout-DAN INGRAM

Today marks 54 years since the Great 1965 Blackout. The power didn't go instantly, instead the frequency of the alternating current dropped as parts of the grid failed and remaining generators still online tried to crank out sufficient current to keep the lights running. As radio stations were using tape decks back then, as the frequency of the alternating current slowed, you can actually hear the tape recording of Jonathan King's "Everybody's Gone to the Moon" slow down. It was a perfect song to be playing on that night, because it was a full moon.

November 9, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Another Saturday while I feel like shit. 😷 At least it’s a three day weekend. Three weeks to Small Business Saturday 🛍️. Mostly sunny and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃.

I was going to head out to Madison County to camp β›Ί but I’m increasingly worried about running into Lake Effect snow ❄ on Monday so decided to stay home. Still a bit congested and achy from my cold and I had a terrible migraine yesterday so I don’t spend a day or two out there and only get sicker. 😰 I will go to the doctor if this progresses well into next week but im not going to pay $25 after sitting for an hour to be told to rest up more.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 39 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 6th. South wind 5 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1975. 10.0 inches of snow fell back in 1900.❄

The sun will set at 4:39 pm with dusk around 5:09 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 10 hours of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. South wind around 8 mph. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1965.

Nice day today but tomorrow will be cloudy ☁ and lake effect could make US 20 dicy. And it’s so cold up north in the Adirondacks. I’d rather save my money 💵 for a nicer weekend. I’m not convinced that the snow is here for the season even if we do get more snow on Tuesday. β›„ If it’s snow free then Thanksgiving weekend on Black Friday I would really like to get up to Stoney Pond in Nelson. Or possibly the Adirondack – hike one day, hunt one, camp two or three nights.

Next weekend though I’ll be staying in town 🏡 as I’m to be tabling for Save the Pine Bush 🌲 at the Green and Renewable Fair that they having this year at Sage College near the hospital. I might just be able to take the bus up there. 🚍 Make it really easy for sure. Looks like a nice weekend though but cold ❄ as will most of the coming week.

I was going to return beer cans yesterday 🍻 from vacation but that didn’t happen as I had the headache after work. I have a ton of them to return which is good as I need more space in my recycling β™» trash can. Once I return them I’ll have room to avoid a trip to the transfer station for a while.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Small Business Saturday 🛍️ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 45 and 18 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 67 back in 1933.
