It is not surprising to learn that the Hudson River is filling with plastics. But scientists are discovering that the plastic we can’t see — tiny particles, or microplastics, created when larger pieces break down or are inserted into cosmetics as exfoliants — are easily absorbed into fish and humans. What is the effect? Scientists aren’t sure yet, but no one thinks it’s good.
You can find the pieces in the deepest trenches of the ocean, nearly 7 miles down. You can find them in the most desolate parts of the Arctic, in the rain over the mountains, in the fish, in the water. And, yes, you can find them in your poop, because you inhale and consume tens of thousands of pieces each year, which is probably a gross underestimate because scientists haven’t yet inventoried all the animals and food that can absorb them.
Microplastics are defined by scientists as objects that are 5 millimeters or smaller. They are created when larger pieces of plastic, such as water bottles, are broken down by sunlight or the rocking of waves. Others are included as exfoliants in cosmetics such as facial scrubs and whitening toothpastes — they’re often visible beads.
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Yes it has but I have tomorrow off as it’s Election Day. Doesn’t feel like Election Day though a I early voted last Monday. Next Monday is Veterans Day ๐บ๐ธ. Mostly sunny and around the freezing point at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐.
A beautiful morning. But it’s not expected to last. As the day progresses we will have increasing clouds โ, with a high of 50 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 10th. South wind 6 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 76 was set in 1994. There was a dusting of snow in 2006.โ
Definitely nice having that extra hour โณ in the morning to get going but the commute home will be dark on the express bus ๐. But daylight is so limited this time of year so it’s best to take advantage of it fully.
The sun will set at 4:45 pm with dusk around 5:14 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over yesterday.
I remembered to turn on my porch light before leaving. ๐ก It’s on a daylight switch to save energy, so it won’t light until dusk as it seems wasteful to leave it on all day. I should see how much power the daylight switch uses itself but it may be a few milliamps or less as it’s probably a small photo cell that turns off a transistor.
Tonight will be cloudy โ, with a low of 42 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 9th. South wind 10 to 13 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 17 occurred back in 1951.
I had a nice dinner ๐ฒ of stuffed peppers at my parents house but I left my laptop charger there. They plan to drop it off at my house after their doctor appointment.
Cool this weekend with temperatures running 13 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees.
Assuming that it doesn’t snow I’m thinking about Madison County and probably Stoney Pond. โบ I thought about leaving work early on Friday but I don’t want to get caught in a snow squall on Friday so I’ll leave early Saturday and come back Monday. My propane tank ๐ฎ is full and my truck almost full of gas โฝ so all I’ll need is any extra food I may need for the trip. If I go Saturday I should have time to find firewood to burn although Stoney Pond is often well picked over for wood.๐ฒGoing to be a crisp weekend but if the wind ๐ isn’t too bad and there is lots of sun it should be nice.
As previously noted, next Monday is Veterans Day ๐บ๐ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:37 pm with dusk at 5:07 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2002.
Good morning! Happy Election Day 2019 🗳๏ธ! I voted over a week ago. Five weeks to 7:15 AM Sunrise (again) 🌅๏ธ. Cloudy, dark and a mild 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 2 am. โ๏ธ
I have today off from work. 🚶 I thought about volunteering on a local campaign but I’m not still feeling that good and I’ll save gas if I stay home. 🏡 Not that nice of a day and I have some electronics projects to work on at home. 🔬 I might also just ride the exercise bike and catch up on the YouTube videos I downloaded.
I am finally recovering from my colds 😷 but the more rest the better I figure. I want to healthy by the weekend if I’m heading up to the Adirondacks this weekend. It should be interesting to see how much of NY 30 and NY 8 are patched up. 🚧 I think it will be hot tenting especially if there is a bit of snow up north. โ
Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 11am. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 57 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 24th. Cool this weekend with temperatures running 10 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 39. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Chance of precipitation is 30%. At least that should help the snow melt. โ Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees.
It looks we will get our first snow storm of the season โ come Thursday into Friday. I might put aside the Madison County trip in favor of heading up to the Adirondacks on NY 8 on the East Branch during Veterans Day Weekend. โบ Brown Road while occasionally plowed most of the way to the campground can still be pretty icy.
One month 📅 from now will be Repeal of Prohibition Day 🍺 when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm.
