June 5, 2019 Night

Good evening! Rain and 70 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees. First real summer night for sure. Long day at work, I ended up taking the nine o’clock home. 🏑

I really like how they have displayed the pride flag over the Capitol πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewell Rebellion. Certainly in some ways society has come so far in the past half century, even if in other parts like race relationships or even the rural urban divide we’ve made a lot less progress. Too much of society is about our own tribes and forcing our will over other tribes, too little is about mutual respect for diversity and people different than ourselves. Later in the week I want to bring in my high resolution camera and get a picture of the flag. It’s really a beautiful flag, especially when blue skies return.

Tonight will have showers likely before 11pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 11pm and 3am, then showers likely after 3am. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1971.

The sun will rise at 5:18 am with the first light at 4:43 am, which is 20 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 48 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 59 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly before 2pm. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing 🌦, with a high of 76 degrees at 5pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 7th. Pretty close to summer weather. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7am. Light and variable wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1925.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 56 at 6pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees. Definitely going to try to maximize the weekend even if I’m not heading out of town to camp. Hopefully this nice weather will be back for a second round the following weekend.

How A Fight Over Beef Jerky Reveals Tensions Over SNAP In The Trump Era : The Salt : NPR

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps, delivers about $60 billion in aid each year. And retailers that accept SNAP benefits are required to stock a variety of staple foods — including a minimum number of fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and grain options. Now, there's a controversy brewing over which foods count as staples. Should beef jerky, spray cheese and queso dip count? The Trump administration has proposed a rule that would allow retailers to include these items.

A rule written during the Obama administration would require retailers to stock at least seven different products in each of four key food categories — fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and grains. Under the change proposed by the Trump administration, retailers could stock dried meats — such as beef jerky — and shelf-stable, processed cheese products to help them meet their meat and dairy requirements. And this may offset the need to offer as many fresh meat and dairy products. Wootan's complaint about this policy: "Very few families would serve up a Slim Jim as the main course in a meal," she says. It's a snack.

It’s Always Wildfire Season Now, Says Forest Service Chief : NPR

The chief of the U.S. Forest Service is warning that a billion acres of land across America are at risk of catastrophic wildfires like last fall's deadly Camp Fire that destroyed most of Paradise, Calif. As we head into summer, with smoke already drifting into the Northwest from wildfires in Alberta, Canada, Vicki Christiansen said wildfires are now a year-round phenomenon. She pointed to the hazardous conditions in forests that result from a history of suppression of wildfires, rampant home development in high-risk places and the changing climate. "When you look nationwide there's not any place that we're really at a fire season. Fire season is not an appropriate term anymore," Christiansen said in an interview with NPR at the agency's headquarters in Washington.

June 5, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Today 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️. Two weeks to Last Day of Session πŸ›. Maybe there is hope. Looking forward summer and getting out of town. But not this weekend. I noticed that there is still three weekends after this weekend in June so I’ll still have a chance to get out at least once in June. Hopefully once it warms up and the water isn’t so cold and the black flies are done. 🏊 The Mine Kill pool opens in two and half weeks on June 22nd.πŸ– That could be a fun weekend, hiking in the Catskills, swimming, fishing, and camping up at Burnt-Rossman.

Partly cloudy and 61 degrees at the Elsmere. NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 2 pm. It was a pretty cloudy day but it seems like we’ve had some more clearing. Maybe it will be a day that is kind of gray with haze in the sky then a real cloudy and dark day, but I brought my umbrella — ran upstairs for it –which ensures no rain today.β˜”

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 14th. Maximum dew point of 62 at 4pm. South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 64 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1925.

The sun will set at 8:29 pm with dusk around 9:04 pm, which is 41 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look out for thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 72 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and one second over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 7pm and 1am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 64 degrees at 3am. 10 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 8pm. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1971.

I decided against getting a USB flashlight that I could charge in my truck, although it looks like there are lots of options. πŸ”¦ I really have quite a bit of flashlights, and those LED flashlight batteries last quite a long time. I really should switch over to rechargable batteries though — I some mains have chargers around — and it looks like they make buck-converter based USB chargers or even 12 volt that I could use for easy plugging into my truck. Still haven’t decided on the hammock. Maybe tonight — as I sure would like to have it if I go camping next weekend, especially if I do end up going up to that site up in Perkins Clearing where I was on Labor Day last year.πŸ’€

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Last Day of Session πŸ› when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. Almost the longest day of the year — that Friday is the first day of summer. On that day in 2018, we had humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 83 and 64 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1995.

This evening I’m hoping to get out for my evening walk, but it all depends on the timing of the thunderstorms.β›ˆ I expect in two weeks I’ll be getting home earlier much more regularly. I really haven’t spent much time at the park after work, πŸ“— because I’ve either been at work or it’s been cold and rainy in the evening. 🏞
