Meltdown Showed Extent of NSA Surveillance — and Other Tales From Hundreds of Intelligence Documents
The problem had been brewing for nearly a decade, intelligence sources had warned, as the National Security Agency vacuumed up more and more surveillance information into computer systems at its Fort Meade, Maryland, headquarters: There just wasn’t enough power coming through the local electric grid to support the rate at which the agency was hoarding other people’s communications.
“If there’s a major power failure out there, any backup systems would be inadequate to power the whole facility,” a former NSA manager told the Baltimore Sun in August 2006.
“It’s obviously worrisome, particularly on days like today.”
It turns out that manager, and other sources quoted in the Sun piece, were even more correct than was publicly known at the time: The NSA had, just the prior month, already experienced a major power outage and been forced for the first time to switch over its most critical monitoring — its nerve center, the National Security Operations Center — to a backup facility in Augusta, Georgia, according to an internal report classified “secret.” The culprit: hot weather and electric company problems generating sufficient power, according to an article posted on the internal agency news site known as SIDtoday.
Good morning! Talk about a beautiful Tuesday morning. Three weeks to Primary Day 🗳️. It will be summer by then. One of these days I’ll have to research the primary candidates. I kind of like voting for interesting people. 😂 If you’re going to vote ❎ for the grafter they should be at least colorful and fun. Like Mike Connors. Plus Independence Day is a month away. 🎇 I think soon they’ll be selling fountain fireworks and sparklers. Yeap, I need some to light off in the wilderness and disturb the peace.☮
We may lose and we may win
Though we will never be here again
So open up I’m climbin’ in
I heard the lady in the flat bed Ford was in her mid 70s at this point, hands calloused from years hauling slop buckets and working with heavy machinery on the farm. 🚜 I bet she packs too. 🔫 Probably if she’s in New Mexico she has solar on the house.
Sunny and 52 degrees at the CDTA Bus Stop #10595. 🌞 There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. Still need to figure out how to get that temperature probe working in my apartment so I don’t really have an idea on the temperature at home. I’ll probably have to desolder things and test with a voltmeter. ⚡
Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds 🌞, with a high of 65 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 2nd. West wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1919.
Heading in somewhat earlier than normal 🏢 because I have a project to do this morning. At least it’s a nice morning for a change, not too cold or rainy. And it’s amazing we haven’t had any super hot and humid days. 🔥 But I know those days are coming as are days at the Potholers. 🏊
The sun will set at 8:28 pm with dusk around 9:03 pm, which is 43 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 60 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Duck, I didn’t bring my umbrella ☔ by I might have one in the office for what’s it’s worth. Today will have 15 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 5 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have showers likely, mainly between 7pm and 11pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 50 at 4am. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1990.
I have narrowed down my list of camping hammocks 📃 to replace my torn one. They really are quite affordable and they do provide a lot of pleasure 😌 up at camp. Forty or fifty bucks doesn’t go that far anymore. I want to finalize my decision by mid week so I have it for the following week should I go to either Piseco-Powley Road or Perkins Clearing. Probably the later as I need cell reception 📶 for work and there is no reception at Piseco-Powley Road or very spotty, although I might spend my day down in Little Falls should I go up to Piseco-Powley Road during the third weekend of June.
I’ve continued my search for USB rechargable flashlights on AliExpress and EBay. 🔦 Ideally I’d like something that I could plug directly into one of the many the USB ports on my truck for charging, 🔌 although I guess I could use a cable. A lot of them are based around the 18650 rechargable lithium ion battery that has the advantage that many chargers are available, and they are easy to swap in and out of the flashlights, although they make things more bulky. I just want something I can keep fully charged up at camp when I need them when things are dark, so it’s ready with bright light.
While I guess CDTA has had this for a while on their website, I noticed just yesterday if you go to their mobile website or website, they will show you the estimated position of buses along the line. 🚌 (Look for the bus icon along the stop) That’s a feature I’ve looking for for years, if only for a psychological benefit of having something to look at on my phone while I wait for the bus. Real time bus information is nice — with a minute delay, but I think I kind of prefer to see the estimated bus location. It’s not perfect as the buses only ping the bus service servers once a minute, and sometimes downtown the signal is blocked by the buildings.
As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Primary Day 🗳️ at least for us democrats locally when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 78 and 55 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1898.
