Why Do People Say Muslim Now Instead of Moslem? | History News Network

When Baby Boomers were children it was Moslem. The American Heritage Dictionary (1992) noted,"Moslem is the form predominantly preferred in journalism and popular usage. Muslim is preferred by scholars and by English-speaking adherents of Islam." No more. Now, almost everybody uses Muslim.

According to the Center for Nonproliferation Studies,"Moslem and Muslim are basically two different spellings for the same word." But the seemingly arbitrary choice of spellings is a sensitive subject for many followers of Islam. Whereas for most English speakers, the two words are synonymous in meaning, the Arabic roots of the two words are very different. A Muslim in Arabic means"one who gives himself to God," and is by definition, someone who adheres to Islam. By contrast, a Moslem in Arabic means"one who is evil and unjust" when the word is pronounced, as it is in English, Mozlem with a z.

April 27, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Arbor Day 🌳! Without trees to burn fires wouldn’t be nearly as much fun and probably smell bad with all that plastic crap. Next Saturday is 8 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡. Rain showers, blustery and a colf 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a west breeze at 14 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 5 am. β˜ƒοΈ We haven’t talked much about freezing weather in a while but it returns to Delmar at least briefly. Next Wednesday is May. 🌼

Last night I ended up working on some mapping projects and working on some code too. πŸ“Ή I also watched some YouTube videos and fell asleep pretty early as I was tired. 😴 That said I think lately I’ve been sleeping better.

This morning I’ve made up some coffee β˜• and are riding the exercise bike. I honestly don’t think I’ve missed much by leaving the wilderness early. It was a pretty raw day out yesterday with some times of very heavy rain and today is cold, damp and windy. I have my camping gear put away for the most part although a lot of it I will probably leave in my truck for now.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 47 degrees at 7am. Temperatures continue to fall as the afternoon progresses. 16 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 23rd. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1962. There was a dusting of snow in 1946.❄ But the war was over. For now.

The sun will set at 7:51 pm with dusk around 8:21 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 43 degrees. Breezy, 22 mph breeze β›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 38mph. Today will have 13 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 34 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 38 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 18th. Breezy, with a west wind 16 to 21 mph decreasing to 6 to 11 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. In 2018, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1947.

In a little bit I’m going to take a shower and then head down to the library πŸ“š so I can upload some of the stuff I’ve created to social media and the blog. I don’t regularly update my social media but when I stuff that is ready to go I do upload it.

As previously noted, next Saturday is 8 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:59 pm with dusk at 8:30 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny skies , warm weather with some rain showers and temperatures between 84 and 58 degrees. I doubt it will be that warm next week due to the 8-14 day outlook. Typically, the high temperature is 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1944.
