Fog in the Gorge
Hendrik Verwoerd – Wikipedia
"Dr. Verwoerd was an authoritarian, socially conservative leader and an Afrikaner nationalist. His goal in founding the Republic of South Africa, thereby leaving the British Commonwealth, was to preserve minority rule by white Afrikaners over the various non-white ethnic groups, including Bantu, Khoisan, Coloured and Indian people, who were the majority of South Africa's population. To that end, he greatly expanded apartheid (apart-ness or separate development), the system of forced classification and segregation by race that existed in South Africa from 1948 to 1994."
October 31, 2018 Morning
Good morning! Happy Halloween π. Next Wednesday is Day After Election Day. π Honestly, though all that campaign literature doesn’t burn that well in my experience, although maybe if you pulped them up into logsΒ like the videos on the internet show it might work better.Β π₯ We got more rain showers, breaks of sun, clouds, and 44 degrees in North Syracuse.Β π¦ There is a southeast breeze at 9 mph. π. It’s very rare that we have nice weather around these parts. Looking ahead to the next time of good weather, the skies will clear Sunday around 7 am.π€
Today will have showers, mainly after 1pm.π§ High of 60 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees above normal. South wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 54 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 1946. 0.1 inches of snow fell back in 1913.β
The sun will set at 5:57 pm with dusk around 6:26 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. π At sunset, look for rainΒ π§ and 58 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have showers likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy π§, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal. West wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1964.
There are 6 days,Β 11 hours and 2 minutes until the poll close on Election Day in New York. π³ Day by day it’s getting closer. All I can say is I will be glad once it’s over. I am already starting to carefully make my plans for once it’s over, the days and times of places where I will go and camp over the following week.π In the very long range, based on the 8-14 day outlook, the weather doesn’t look real nice but maybe it won’t be a wash-out. I guess I can take gray days for my trip, as that’s been about the best we can do in recent months. Hopefully there will still be enough sun that with a little driving I’ll be able to keep things charged up.
After giving it a lot of though, I decided not to head down to Elk Country this year on my November road trip. I thought about getting a permit to camp at Hicks Run, π¦ but I decided against it on grounds that it would be a much longer trip, and right the weather looks kind of marginal. plus I want to spend more nights at one place or another and less time driving, especially because now I don’t have to worry about topping off the starting battery.
As previously noted, next Wednesday is Day After Election Day π when the sun will be setting at 4:48 pm with dusk at 5:18 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2017, we had cloudy skies and temperatures between 43 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 51 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1938.
No washing machines
One of my goals when I eventually have my own land and live off grid is to live with as minimal electricity as possible. This means forgoing high amperage appliances like a washing machine and dryer. Being able to do your own wash at home is great if you have a family but as a single guy it seems like visiting the laundromat once a week is a fairly small price to pay for never having to worry about machines breaking down or having a big power and water supply.
People warn you that you should always stick around the laundromat to watch your clothes and make sure nobody steals them. But honestly most of my clothes are inexpensive and non fancy. I buy a lot of my casual clothes from Walmart. In most small towns people are honest and who is going to interrupt your wash at any rate? I make sure not to leave wash unattended when it’s not going, planning time accordingly.
That gives me time to go to the grocery store while I’m in town and also catch up on things that require wifi like uploading photos or videos to the blog. Most laundromats have free wifi at this point, so that means you can kill two stones at once. It beats having to pay to have high-speed internet at home, especially when most other things don’t require much bandwidth, and you can do them on your phone.
On a per wash basis laundromats are more expensive. But as a single guy I do maybe two loads a week, less in the summer, especially when I’m wearing shorts. Without the cost of utility bills via being connected to the grid though I think I would come out ahead just using the laundromat. There are options for home washing by hand or lower power solutions but honestly I think I prefer the traditional modern laundry methods because I get my clothes quite dirty and machines make them quite clean.
