October 18, 2018 – Next Sixteen Weeks

It’s that’s time of year when we get into the colder part of autumn and winter is just around corner. The good news is that in 16 weeks, the weather will slowly but surely start moderating, with longer days and somewhat warmer weather by mid-February. And who knows, winters generally aren’t as cold as they once were.

Ending the postal convention with China

I am very disappointed with the president’s decision to end the really inexpensive postage for small trinkets like electronic components from China. For many people it’s not a big deal but for me is kind of a big deal because I like the selection of very inexpensive components I could get direct from the factory in China on AliExpress.🎎

I can understand why the president wants to crack down on tax and duty free imports as part of his effort to crack down on global trade but honestly the things covered by the low cost postage from China usually are very inexpensive and small lightweight packages. πŸ“¦They are things like a bag of 100 electrolytic capacitors, a small batch of resistors or some LEDs. You’re not able to get the dirt cheap shipping on anything much bigger than that.

Inexpensive China imports of small orders electronic components are good for the hobbyist. We should be doing more to teach our youth about electricity and electronics.πŸ“Ÿ I think it’s problematic we are cutting hobbyists out of their goods. Already you pay much higher shipping for larger orders and are required to pay tariffs on imports greater than $1,000.

Nobody in America makes the inexpensive electronic components widely used by hobbyists. πŸ‘¦ Inexpensive direct-from-China components aren’t hurting American businesses. Sure you can buy electronic components from US retailers for a higher price and get next day or shipping within a week.Β πŸ“¨ But sometimes for the hobbyist waiting a few weeks for a package from China is a lot of fun.

I really don’t like the fact that the president is ending the postal convention with low-cost shipping for small packages from China.

October 18, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Two weeks to November πŸ₯§. Mostly sunny and 33 degrees in Clay. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. Just barely above freezing now, it got below freezing and was at 32 according to Big Red’s DIC this morning. Come tonight, temperatures could drop below freezing at around 2 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Definitely a real cold morning. Not only was it below freezing, when I started out, it was cold enough to kick the alternator in Big Red up to 15.2 volts. πŸ”‹ The Silverado has a temperature compensating alternator that when it’s cold out and the battery is taking in more current, it will push extra voltage into the battery. That’s ton of power when you think about it — the 145 amp alternator is putting out 2,240 watts or 2.2 kW. But accessories and the second battery are power hungry, especially in the cold weather. Winter’s coming. When I’m parked at home for extended periods, in cold weather, I’ll leave the batteries connected so solar power can top both of them off. 🌞

Today will have a slight chance of sprinkles after 3pm. Mostly sunny 😎, with a high of 42 degrees at 3pm. 17 degrees below normal. Northwest wind 8 to 16 mph. Cold but sunny. At least no blowing snow yet, but it will be blustery and cold. I hope if your out hunting, your well prepared for the cold weather, wearing layers of warm clothing. It’s gets very cold sitting in the woods at times.Β That said, today in recent memories, has been quite warm according to the almanac. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 84 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 2015.❄

The sun will set at 6:16 pm with dusk around 6:45 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies β›… and 41 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 11 mph. Going to be a cold one for sure. Today will have 10 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ☁, with a low of 36 degrees at 2am. Two degrees below normal. Southwest wind around 8 mph. In 2017, we had clear skies. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1974. It’s a little hard to say for sure.

There are 19 days, 13 hours and 19 minutes until the poll close on Election Day in New York. πŸ—³ We are now down to the teens for days left until the polls close. The mercury is dropping, autumn is well underway. I am sure in the outlaying areas, the leaves are quickly dropping. Maybe we’ll even start to see some leaves turning color here in the Syracuse-area soon. πŸ‚ I guess in some places that’s already happening.

Today is going to be a busy day. πŸ•΄Just a lot of things on the calendar. Tomorrow, I’m hoping to take off mid-day and maybe go down to Green Lakes for an extended lunch break. We will see how things go. It’s just getting to that point with things.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until November πŸ₯§ when the sun will be setting at 5:55 pm with dusk at 6:25 pm. Then the following Sunday we set the clocks back an hour. On that day in 2017, we had rain, drizzle, cloudy skies and temperatures between 49 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.
