Ending the postal convention with China
I am very disappointed with the president’s decision to end the really inexpensive postage for small trinkets like electronic components from China. For many people it’s not a big deal but for me is kind of a big deal because I like the selection of very inexpensive components I could get direct from the factory in China on AliExpress.π
I can understand why the president wants to crack down on tax and duty free imports as part of his effort to crack down on global trade but honestly the things covered by the low cost postage from China usually are very inexpensive and small lightweight packages. π¦They are things like a bag of 100 electrolytic capacitors, a small batch of resistors or some LEDs. You’re not able to get the dirt cheap shipping on anything much bigger than that.
Inexpensive China imports of small orders electronic components are good for the hobbyist. We should be doing more to teach our youth about electricity and electronics.π I think it’s problematic we are cutting hobbyists out of their goods. Already you pay much higher shipping for larger orders and are required to pay tariffs on imports greater than $1,000.
Nobody in America makes the inexpensive electronic components widely used by hobbyists. π¦ Inexpensive direct-from-China components aren’t hurting American businesses. Sure you can buy electronic components from US retailers for a higher price and get next day or shipping within a week.Β π¨ But sometimes for the hobbyist waiting a few weeks for a package from China is a lot of fun.
