September 28, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Mostly cloudy and 52 degrees in Clay. ☁ A little bit of sun is peaking out to the west, but the clouds aren’t expected to last all day. There is a east-southeast breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 51 degrees. I might try to get out a little later on in the day and enjoy some of the sunshine, should it appear, before it gets dark out. Days are rapidly getting shorter, and I’ve just been so busy lately with work.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞 , with a high of 69 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 3pm. East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 83 was set in 2014. Autumns aren’t as cool as they once were, although today won’t be the warmest autumn day ever — but it should be nice once the clouds from last night’s rain pass-by.

The sun will set at 6:50 pm with dusk around 7:18 pm, which is one minute and 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies and 67 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 56 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy ☁, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6pm. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2000.

The USB-audio DAC converter I bought should finally arrive today. Somehow I was hoping it would arrive earlier, but that was not to be. I also bought another set of conventional wired headphones. 🎧 I think it will work well, and be convenient especially at home as I can leave it plugged into the USB hub.  Speaking of headphone issues, I lost one of the pads for the bluetooth headphones that I have and use with my phone. But i seemed to be able to fix that with some soft double-sided tape. 🀠 Hey it works, and provides a decent fit in my ear and is relatively soft. Eventually I will get better bluetooth headphones, but that will have to wait until I have more money. At $30

While the coming week looks fairly rainy in Syracuse, I am hoping to get out for some hiking for a while this weekend. 🌦 Probably not head too far away, maybe just a little farther west on Erie Canalway Trail or maybe Green Lakes. I haven’t done the trail around the lakes this year yet. At some point I want to do Jones Hill but not until the leaves are peak. The same is true with Clark Reservation, that jewel in Dewitt that isn’t well known. 🏞 At some point I also want to drive up to Chimney Bluffs State Park, although I may wait until late October (assuming I can get the time to do that), as the leaves won’t turn until late there.πŸ‚

Starting to think a little bit about my November trip. This year I am thinking of taking it a bit slower then in years, spending multiple nights in one campsite. That would mean less setting up and taking down of the campsite, especially if I camp places where I can walk to hunt, hike, or do other activities. 🦊 It’s kind of nice how with the solar panel on a sunny day I can easily generate all the electricity I need to top off the battery without ever going anywhere.

For the trip, I am thinking about heading out US 20, spending a night or two at Stony Pond, visiting parks and other areas near Cazenovia/Nelson, then head west to Montezuma, then down to the Finger Lakes National Forest. 🌲🌲🌲 I don’t expect to stay more then a night or two in the National Forest, as I want to spend a few nights camping in Bully Hill or Klipnocky State Forest and exploring more of Allegany County, heading up at least one day to Letchworth to see the new railroad bridge. Then maybe down to Pennsylvania for a few days, maybe to the Allegheny National Forest and then maybe — a definite maybe — to Elk Country, and camping at Hicks Run. This time, I’ll make sure to have a permit in hand in advance. It’s a long trip, but I think it would be a nice one.😍

Looking ahead, there are 8 weeks until Buy Nothing Day πŸ›οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.

I am a big fan of the LED streetlights they have in North Syracuse. They do a very good job illuminating the roads, with excellent color rendition even on dark rainy nights. They have flat lens, and very directional light, so very little glare from the light.

The purpose of street lights is to keep people from crashing, so brighter, better street lights are definitely worthwhile — especially when they use less energy then the older versions.

Only the devil drives across Devil’s Pass. Would you?

"Find the road. It's on the map It wasn't too long ago that people actually drove from one side to the other -- but we wouldn't. In narrow cars or buggies, they crossed the pass. Drive it now? Nope. Maybe the Devil drives across. He's not afraid to go straight down. It is called Devil's Pass. One misstep and you go straight down. [ 825 more words ]
