August 22, 2018 Morning
Good morning! Today the State Fair Opens π‘. I’ve actually had very little interest in going over the years, not because I’m disinterested in agriculture but I’m not into those big kind of events. Six weeks to Last Sunset After 7 PM π. Autumn is also a month away. π
The rain appears to be done,π just clouds and 69 degrees in Delmar. β There is a south breeze at 13 mph. π. The dew point is 68 degrees. The skies will clear around 1 pm.
I walked down the express bus again this morning, and it was a smooth commute downtown. π Passed a car carrier and was looking at the cars, I don’t really know why. Pretty generic American sedans. In the Empire State Plaza, somebody cut off the bus and it slammed on the brakes and two other motorists got into a yelling fight. Kind of strange to see that kind of road rage, it’s why motoring is so unpleasant.
Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny π, with a high of 79 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 9am. South wind 13 to 18 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. It was sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1916.
The sun will set at 7:45 pm with dusk around 8:15 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. π At sunset, look for partly clear skies and 72 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. Breezy, 16 mph breeze β from the west-northwest. Great weather for the Save the Pine Bush Hike today. Today will have 13 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be partly cloudy β, with a low of 56 degrees at 5am. Three degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6pm. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1988.
Today in 1971, twenty of the Camden 28 were arrested. They were a group of “Catholic left” anti-Vietnam War activists who in 1971 planned and executed a raid on a Camden, New Jersey draft board.β The raid resulted in a high-profile criminal trial of the activists that was seen by many as a referendum on the Vietnam War and as an example of successful use of jury nullification.π¨
One month π from now will be Autumn π when the sun will be setting at 6:51 pm with dusk at 7:19 pm. The average high temperature is 80 degrees, with a record high of 93 in 1916.
Boredom
They say that boredom is an endangered species, one that most people don’t embrace these days. There is always smartphones, podcasts to listen to, activities to do. No time for boredom. But sometimes I embrace having nothing to do.
It’s not a bad thing to spend some time in the woods just listening to the birds, watching the flicker of the sunlight in the branches of the tree. Sit totally still, watch the deer walk by, the chipmunk rustle the leaves the barn owl hoot in the distance.
