A History of Patroons and Patrons at Bennett Hill – Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy

Guest Post: A History of Patroons and Patrons at Bennett Hill – Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy

"Recently, while working on the trails of MHLC’s Bennett Hill Preserve as part of my internship with the Conservancy, I became curious about the history of European agriculture and settlement on this land. The history of the small farm neighboring the property (while beginning your hike on the Gree..."

August 19, 2018 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Mostly cloudy and 77 degrees at the Bennett Hill Preserve. β›… There is a east breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 63 degrees. Out for a little hike this afternoon before heading out to my parents house for Sunday dinner.

I think it feels a bit humif because the ground is still so saturated from yesterday’s rain. 🐸 Bugs are kind of bad at Bennett Hill, I’m actually hiking along the trail as I write this. I’m hoping they won’t be so bad when I get out to mom and dad’s as I want to lie out on the hammock when I get there. Ton of people up here today but I guess I don’t usually come up here on nice weekend days in the summer.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌞 , with a low of 58 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. Northeast wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1998. Should be a very pleasant evening.

The sun will set at 7:50 pm with dusk around 8:20 pm, which is one minute and 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 Think that is an early sunset? Talk to me in three weeks weeks! Lol. At sunset, look for partly clear skies and 71 degrees. The dew point will be 57 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over yesterday.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞 , with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 4pm. Light and variable wind becoming east around 6 mph in the morning. I wish we could have had that weather for the weekend. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1937.

Next weekends forecast still looks really nice 😎 so I’m hoping for a nice one last summer weekend, well at least prior to the end of summer during Labor Day Weekend. 🏢 Crunch time at work really gets underway the following weekend and I’ll probably be busy through November. But I actually really like November and December camping. β›Ί It can be a lot of fun. I think though I might still have a chance to get away maybe a few autumn weekends 🍂 to hunt, fish and maybe camp depending on where I’m stationed for work.

On this day in 1955, severe flooding across the northeastern portion of our country caused by Hurricane Diane claims 200 lives. 💦 Mostly forgotten now, it devesated the Poconos of Pennsylvania, along with much of Connecticut and Massachusetts as rivers overflowed their banks and dams failed.🌀 They’ve had some pretty bad storms this year from rain in Pennsylvania, some very devastating but nothing like Hurricane Diane.

Looking ahead, there are 11 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends 🛥️ when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:13 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2017, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 50 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.

Thinking about taking off Friday to go up to the Adirondacks for a long weekend. Maybe Moose River and Cedar River Flow but I think I’m more inclined just to do Pisceo-Powley Road then drive down one day to Little Falls, hike Moss Island and paddle out along on the Hudson, maybe this time above the lock (boat launch) rather than below (off Old River Road by the waste water plant) .

After sitting for a week the magic pixies in my truck were a bit lethargic, dancing around at 12.53 volts. Not terrible, it would certainly start at that voltage but not ideal either. So I flipped switch connecting the solar panel to the starting battery, a loud clunk under the hood occurred and now I have have those magic pixies dancing around at 13.7 volts. This was when I turn the key in a bit those magic pixies will be at their maximum happiness level.
