American toddlers are eating more sugar than the amount recommended for adults β€” Quartz

"The study, conducted by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, looked at added sugar consumptionβ€”sugars in your diet that are not naturally occurring, like those found in fruit and milk, but rather added into foods during preparation or processing. Researchers used data collected from a nationally representative sample of more than 800 kids between six and 23 months old who participated in the 2011 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Parents were asked to record every item their child ate or drank during a 24-hour period, and the researchers calculated a mean sugar intake based on these testimonies."

"The study found that toddlers 12 to 18 months consumed 5.5 teaspoons per day, and that toddlers 19 to 23 months consumed 7.1 teaspoons. This is close to, or more than, the amount of sugar recommended by AHA for adult women (six teaspoons) and men (nine teaspoons). Parents of more than 80% of kids aged six to 23 months reported their children consumed at least some added sugar on a given day."

June 18, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Hello, summer. The calendar doesn’t say summer until Thursday but today will certainly be hazy, hot and humid. At the nine o’clock hour it’s partly sunny and 80 degrees in Delmar, NY. Lots of haze though. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 8 am. 😓

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny and hot 🌞 , with a high of 93 degrees at 3pm. 14 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 11am. Heat index values as high as 99. Going to be a hazy, hot and summer day although the breeze will help. Southwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 88 degrees. Hot and humid weather is not unusual in mid June. The record high of 97 was set in 1957.

I should get used to these hazy, hot and humid days of summer, because eventually I want to move out of the snow belt as I hate the winters with all the salt. ❄ That said with proper design and planning living with the heat is quite bareable. Air conditioning is a crutch, plenty of people have lived without it. I’ve drawn the curtains in my apartment and when I get home late tonight I’ll fire up the fan and have a cold glass of orange juice. 🍶I’ve tried to cut back on drinking alcohol as it’s expensive and not that healthy either.

The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 18 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for thunderstorms 💦⚑ and 84 degrees. The dew point will be 70 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 77. β›± There will be a west breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 10 seconds over yesterday. I forgot my umbrella which is the most unfortunate thing but hopefully it won’t be raining when I get out of work.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Cloudy β˜” , with a low of 69 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 6pm. West wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1950.

It wasn’t a bad weekend. I went out to my parents house for Father’s Day👦 and went for a paddle and did some fishing in Lawson Lake.🐳 Not many bite though with the heat, the water temperature was warm in that shallow lake. And obviously on Saturday the Gas Up and Thacher Park. It would have been a nice weekend to hit up the Potholers but that was not to be.

On this day in 1971, President Richard Nixon declares that illegal drugs are “public enemy number one”, which becomes popularized as the “War on Drugs”. Also in 1983, Astronaut Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space.

Looking ahead, there are 11 weeks until Labor Day 👨‍🏭 when the sun will be setting at 7:25 pm with dusk at 7:54 pm. On that day in 2017, we had rain, drizzle, heavy fog, shallow fog, patches of fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 58 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 100 back in 1953.
