How Social Media Exploits Our Moral Emotions

"This wasn’t the first time caprice was punished with viral outrage. Sacco’s tweet is just one of countless examples of provocative online behavior drawing a seemingly disproportionate social punishment. Why does this keep happening? Because the architecture of social media exploits our sense of right and wrong, reaping profit from the pleasure we feel in expressing righteous outrage. The algorithms that undergird the flow of information on social media are, like the sensationalist print media and incendiary talk radio that came before them, designed to maximize ad revenue by engaging consumers’ attention to the fullest extent possible. Or as novelist John Green puts it, β€œTwitter is not designed to make you happier or better informed. It’s designed to keep you on Twitter.”

May 19, 2018 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Rain showers but clearing and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 48 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 2 pm. Kind of a rainy spring afternoon, not to be unexpected though by the forecast we’ve had the past few days for the weekend. I’m glad I got out and enjoyed the nice weather on Friday, as today is not a good day to be out int he wilderness. Hopefully this nasty weather will be done by Memorial Day Weekend, as it would be nice get out and enjoy the weekend somewhere fun.

Went down to the library, and was having a lot of problem with the WiFi on my laptop. πŸ“Ά It’s working well now that I moved somewhere else, and it’s super fast. I think the Linux driver doesn’t play nice with the wireless network when other people are on the network. It’s fine, I wish I had known at earlier on and just moved to another part of the library and connect to a network with just less traffic.

Did a little bit of cleaning and working on some maps this morning, πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»Not a very nice day, so nothing real excited. At least the rain is clearing off the solar panel. I just need to get a few more parts before I can make this live tomorrow. I am going to go shopping later on today, probably after dinner.

The sun will set at 8:15 pm with dusk around 8:48 pm, which is one minute later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ☁ and 57 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before 7pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 9pm. Patchy fog before 9pm. Otherwise, cloudy , with a low of 55 degrees at 6pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6am. South wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2002.

I’m a little sore with the damp weather. I don’t know it just happens. Like so many Americans I have aches and pains – minor but still. I guess it’s all the chemicals we are exposed to or maybe it’s lyme disease or something else. Not a big deal, I’m sure if I was out in the wilderness I’d feel better. Hopefully next weekend. 😐

I noticed where I parked I have really good sun exposure in the afternoons. That’s good as during the weekdays my accessory battery should always now be close to topped off which will ensure plenty of power for running the lights, charging my phone and sitting out back in the evenings.:idea:I can’t wait to find out how well it works starting this week. Or maybe be disappointed by something not working or the sun angle on the roof not as good as I had hoped.

I’m increasingly thinking about adding fender extender things over the wheels of my truck to reduce the number of rocks it kicks up, ♦ as I’m a bit worried that throwing gravel with the wheels that stick out beyond the truck could hit the panel, although maybe I’m over estimating the risk. I mean my truck sometimes throws rocks but the panel is up so high. I don’t know, it would look nicer and cover the wheels well rot but it’s an expense I’d rather avoid. I’ve priced them out online, I should find out what the local shop charges.
