July 18, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Two weeks to August 1st.Β Foggy and 70 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends Monday around 10 pm.

Today will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high of 84 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 4pm. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953.

The sun will set at 8:28 pm with dusk around 9:01 pm, which is 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly clear conditions and 79 degrees. The dew point will be 70 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 1am. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low of 67 degrees at 4am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 6pm. Light southwest wind. In 2016, we had clear skies. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1875.

Walked down to the Park and Ride this morning. I am a bit sweaty from the moisture in the air but I still like stretching my legs before work. It doesn’t hurt to get into work a bit early too.

Last night I went out to Center Square Pub and then made I it home before the rain. And boy oh boy did it pour. The lights flickered on and off briefly, it got really dark and then the sky turned a bright orange. Not really severe weather but it did really pour at times, I’m sure making it very hard to see for those driving in it.

I was a bit tired after the evening out and my Monday,Β and while I had only two beers, I decided to skip going out to the store and wash my truck. It was a good decision, because it really poured. Tonight I will wash it and vacuum it out. And buy groceries, because I’m really starting to run low on supplies now.

Tomorrow I will be dropping off my truck to one of the local brake shopsΒ to find out what is making the noise. I’m definitely not convinced that it’s a serious issue, but I figure for a few hundred bucks I’ll have more piece of mind. It was annoying to listen to the squeak in stop and go traffic, and while maybe it’s not serious, I want to make sure my braking system is working well before I start heavily using it in the Finger Lakes and Pennsylvania. I can downshift, but ultimately brakes do to turn a lot of that forward motion into heat going down those steep hills, especially because low isn’t that low in my truck with the relatively low gear ratio on my truck.

Bought a new peace flag.Β That’s my last flag I plan to add to my collection. I will hang it up when I set up camp in the Finger Lakes next Saturday. I have plenty of flags now, I don’ t really need to set up any more flags.

On this day in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts drives his car off a bridge and his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, dies. And in 1984, there were McDonald’s massacre in San Ysidro, California: In a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. After that, California implemented strict new gun control in that state, and there have been no more mass shootings.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until August 1st when the sun will be setting at 8:14 pm with dusk at 8:46 pm. On that day in 2016, we had rain, drizzle, patches of fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 74 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 101 back in 1933.

Whitehouse to My Campsite

This past weekend I camped about 1 mile from the wilderness boundary and 1 mile from Whitehouse on West River Road. This well maintained road has been proposed to be closed for at least 40 years, but it's still a nice drive to many popular campsites.
