Ice in Albany

The roads are now getting quite slick in the city. They are covered with a slick glaze of ice and sleet. They weren’t so bad in the suburbs. I heard the traction control kicking in hard and cutting the engine speed as the wheels of the bus started slipping by Hackett Middle School. Be careful out there on the roads.

February 7, 2017 9 AM Update

“Kind of sloppy out there although the road surfaces seem okay. It will be all rain by evening as we go through our Tuesday. Quite a bit of rain is expected this afternoon to night. If it was ten degrees colder it would be well over a foot of snow.”

Already the snow has turned to sleet and rain Β and thanks to aggressive salt treatment the roads are just wet. At 29 degrees the rain will freeze on contact for untreated surfaces but it is quickly expected to rise until we reach around 40 degrees later.

The sun will set at 5:17 pm with dusk around 5:47 pm, which is 1 minutes and 19 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 10 hours and 16 minutes of daylight, an increase of 2 minutes and 33 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. Low of 37 degrees at 8pm. 21 degrees above normal. Southeast wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2016, it got down to 25 degrees with periods of snow. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1950.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is Valentines Day when the sun will be setting at 5:27 pm with dusk at 5:55 pm. On that day in 2016, we had sunny skies and temperatures between 8 and -13 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.

February 7, 2017 Morning

“With 40 days and 15 hours of winter remaining, we have heavy snow falling a bit with smaller snowflakes then when it all started. While pretty now, going to turn to rain later. It would be a ton of snow if it was only a bit colder.”

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Next Tuesday is Valentines Day. Cloudy and 28 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a east-northeast breeze at 5 mph. The skies will clear tomorrow around 6 pm.

Today will have snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 11am, then freezing rain and sleet between 11am and 1pm, then rain after 1pm. High of 38 degrees at 6pm. Five degrees above normal. Northeast wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0. 1 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies and a high of 46 degrees. The record high of 48 was set in 2005. 12.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.

I Asked a Psychopath How to Stop Caring About Rejection

"Well, no. I'm a professor and a scientist so my whole life is about probabilities. Everything for me is a percentage. For example if I think something's against me at about 20:1, I'll put in 20 different proposals or versions to make sure I get what I want. Doing that trains your expectations too. If your chances are 20:1 and you only put in one attempt, then you can't get upset if it doesn't work."
