Coal Plant Retirements Will Continue Despite Trumpβs EPA Pick – Brookings Institution.
December 22, 2016 8 AM Update
So it’s continuing to snow and the side roads are snow covered. The meat wagon came roaring through while I was at the bus stop so someone must have slipped off the road. We have dropped a degree in Delmar and now are reading 29 degrees as the snow picks up. The main roads though are just wet. The snow is kind of pretty but it won’t last through the afternoons. While we had some cold days earlier this month, winter lacks the fury it once had. Cold blasts are remarked as unusual events even though fifty years ago, they were the norm to happen in the winter.
Today will rain and snow likely before noon, then a chance of rain between noon and 5pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees above normal. South wind 6 to 8 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had fog, rain and a high of 53 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1990. 12.3 inches of snow fell back in 1969.
The sun will set at 4:26 pm with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 33 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daylight, an increase of 7 seconds over yesterday. The days are getting longer! Summer is on its way in like 179 days.Β
Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am.Β Fairly mild for December. Nine degrees above normal. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2015, it got down to 41 degrees with periods of fog and rain. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1955.
Last night was theΒ Save the Pine Bush Dinner.Β It was pretty good, we had some new volunteer cooking instead of Reszin and the lasagna was pretty good. A lot more dishes to wash, but we got it done and things were pretty well cleaned up by 9 PM.
It looks like I will be able to go out hiking and camping on Christmas Day through Monday.Β The weather should be pretty nice. I’m thinking about the Southern Adirondacks, but I guess I could also stay local and camp in the back country. We will see. I think they have too much snow to head out to Madison County, where I have drive up Brown Road which may or may not be plowed. I will watch the weather and make some decisions later on.
Greenville.
Heading up to Kaaterskill Falls on Tuesday afternoon, I drove through Greenville, the town outside of the Catskills Mountains that I went to High School in. It was kind of a cloudy mid-winter afternoon, but it driving through the town brought back many memories of childhood, including Bryant's Supermarket (now a Hannaford), the Westerner shop, Scott M. Ellis Elementary School, the library, the Town Park, and other lands. And the Catskill Mountains directly to the south. A lot has changed in the town, while a lot has remained the same.
December 22, 2016 Morning
Dark out and snowing this morning. The snow isn’t that heavy but there is good glaze to make untreated surfaces slick, so use a little a little care this morning. The temperature is 31 degrees in but will push towards freezing as morning comes. Sunrise came and went but with the snow and weak sun angle, you wouldn’t know.
Today will have continued snow with rain mixing in as we head into noon, then a chance of rain between noon and 5pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 39 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. So it’s impossible that we will get a foot of snow today.
So Happy Thursday! And only 87 days and 15 odd hours remain to calendar spring. Enjoy the winter. Stay safe.
