KMZ county files make progress

After spending too much time on it this past weekend, the first of a batch of county-wide state land tracks and waypoints are going up on the blog as KMZ files. I probably will put them up over the next month but I might also zip them together as a big file for easy download.

I already have put them on my phone GPS Topo Maps application and they seem to work well. It kind of makes sense to have a single archive, so that’s a feature I may implement next week.

Not everything is perfect yet. Some of the KMZ files have minor styling glitches as displayed on Google Maps. The trail colors and icons don’t always show up perfectly. A few state parks have geometry or projection errors. The Greene County file is too big to properly display on Google Maps as breaking up the multi geometry into separate linestring really made the uncompressed file grow. I have to strip that file down somehow.

But it’s definitely getting there. I used the Rensselaer KMZ file quite well in my GPS at Schodack Island State Park on Saturday. When you load multiple county tracks up, it works really well.
