More about Slide Mountain...
The Slide Mountain Wilderness, encompassing over 47,500 acres, is the largest and most popular wilderness area in the Catskills. Extensive foot trails provide access to the remote interior, often climbing over lofty peaks with spectacular views. Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in all of the Catskills, inspired poet and naturalist John Burroughs to write: "Here the works of man dwindle, in the heart of the southern Catskills." A plaque commemorating both the man and the mountain graces the face of the summit rock, in tribute to Burroughs and his vision.

I am a nephew of Jack Zammiello of Poughkeepsie, NY. He is an insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company-since 1966. His favorite place in this world is the Catskills Mountains; and he has, over the years, shared his Love of that region with me- via stories and unforgettable trips into the Catskills that have broadened my knowledge of those special Mountains; and helped me appreciate and understand my Uncle Jackβs lifelong love affair with the βKaaterskills!β Back in the 1980βs, Jack and I first hiked Slide Mtn.- in the Winter, and I read the words on the plaque there re John Burroughsβ¦ I will always remember that day; and many other sublime visits into the Catskills with Jack- who I consider my Papa in Poughkeepsie!
