October 16, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy ☁️ and damp and 44 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ.

I got a few things packed and are ready for tomorrow’s adventure. β›Ί Things have been scaled down as I think I’ll only get two nights camping with the forecast and because I’m busy with work and I have to be back for the work session and meetings on Tuesday. I’m thinking with the rain likely Monday after and because I want to avoid driving 🚘 home after dark I’ll probably come home Monday before work.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before 1am. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 19th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had rain in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1940.

Tonight will have a New 🌚 Moon with 0% illuminated. The Blue 🌝 Moon is on Saturday, October 31. Tonight will have 13 hours of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny 🌞, with a high of 57 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 22nd. In four weeks on November 13 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (246Β°) at 4:34 pm (Standard Time),πŸŒ„ which is one hour, 36 minutes and 43 seconds earlier then tonight. That’s depressing. In 2019 on that day, we had cold, mostly sunny and temperatures between 26 and 14 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 49 and 32 degrees. The record high of 69 degrees was set back in 1964.

170,000 More U.S. Deaths? What Experts Project For Pandemic Winter : Shots – Health News : NPR

Coronavirus cases are rising rapidly in many states as the U.S. heads into the winter months. And forecasters predict staggering growth in infections and deaths if current trends continue.

It's exactly the kind of scenario that public health experts have long warned could be in store for the country, if it did not aggressively tamp down on infections over the summer.

"We were really hoping to crater the cases in preparation for a bad winter," says Tara Smith, a professor of epidemiology at Kent State University. "We've done basically the opposite."

After hitting an all-time high in July, cases did drop significantly, but the U.S. never reached a level where the public health system could truly get a handle on the outbreak.

Now infections are on the rise again.

Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Delayed Until At Least Late November : Coronavirus Live Updates : NPR

Pfizer, the apparent front-runner in developing a COVID-19 vaccine for the United States, says its results won't be ready until mid-November at the earliest. That dims any lingering expectation that there could be a vaccine by Election Day, as President Trump has asserted.

Trump's hopes had been bolstered by Pfizer executives, who have said they could have clinical trial results sometime in October. Even if that were so, a pre-election vaccine would mean the Food and Drug Administration would have to give an almost immediate thumbs-up.

Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a public statement Friday that it is indeed possible the company could have enough data to know this month whether the vaccine it is developing actually protects people from coronavirus infection. But the company won't have data showing the vaccine is safe before the third week of November at the earliest.
