October 1, 2019 Night

Good evening! Muggy, cloudy and 72 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. Probably the last real muggy evening of the year. The skies will clear Friday around 2 pm. Sitting out back for a while, went to the library earlier and played on the internet for a while.

It was a busy day at work. ๐Ÿ’ผ It just seemed like things were non stop for all day. I’d reply to one email and two more would come in. ๐Ÿ“ง I have an assistant who could help but sometimes it’s difficult to delegate, especially when I have the relationship with the client and know what the client wants. Next week though, especially in the National Quiet Zone I’ll be entirely off the grid. โ›”

There was a big bus ๐Ÿš and some kind of event at the park and ride for the town Republicans. ๐Ÿ˜ They really don’t like the street calming measures on Delaware Avenue. I honestly think it will make the street a lot safer and less crazy. ๐Ÿšง Potential traffic delays are much overstated. One of the Republicans helped me back out and said I had a nice truck. I don’t know but I’m not particularly inclined to vote โŽ republican on the local level, I’m mostly satisfied with the incumbents. I’m a Democrat after all and do a lot of walking ๐Ÿšถ and using public transportation around town. I don’t really get involved in politics or have strong ๐Ÿ’ช views, I’m mostly focused on s and investing for a better tomorrow when I can own my own land.๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ„ I honestly hadn’t followed the latest controversy in the Adirondacks lately – if they lock ๐Ÿ”’ down the entire park โ›ฒ I’ll recreate elsewhere.

I am glad that the truck issues are worked out. ๐Ÿš™ Now I just got to find a way to put those heavy junk rotators to use. Not bringing them to West Virginia but I could see using them some point in future as weights for tying things down at camp. So heavy. Put them away in the attic for now. Tomorrow after work if it’s not pouring rain โ˜” I want to get my propane tank filled and maybe buy some food and a few supplies for use at camp. Then Thursday pack, pack pack ๐Ÿ“ฆ. Friday night laundromat, final review of the trip plan. And early to bed as I want to leave before dawn and get down to Pennsylvania early enough to have scrapple before lunch time.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 65 degrees at 6am. 20 degrees above normal. Definitely mild. Maximum dew point of 67 at 9pm. South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1972.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 24% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:21 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Friday night with a slight chance of rain. The Hunter Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Saturday, October 12th. The sun will rise at 6:52 am with the first light at 6:24 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 15 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 65 degrees at 6am. Typical for tomorrow. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6am. West wind 7 to 9 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1927. There was a dusting of snow in 1899.โ„

I think this is my best planned trip to West Virginia ever. โ›บ So much detail and plans this year, I really know where I’m going and what’s worthwhile and whats not. 2017 was kind of a mess with my mom being in the hospital, ๐Ÿฅ and really involved minimal planning. I just kind of coasted on my knowledge from 2015. That year was my first trip to West Virginia – it was fun but I didn’t really know my way around. Late 2020 or maybe autumn 2021 I’m thinking about a trip to Warren National Forest in Ohio which will be a totally new place to explore. Eventually I want to go spend a week in Missouri but that’s in the out year.

Definitely now would like to hit both the high peak of Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia on my trip. ๐Ÿ—ป They’re all within 50 miles of each other in the Appalachian high country so very doable and the only real hike, which isn’t long but is steep is the Maryland Peak. I probably would want to visit the Pennsylvania peak either on the way down there or up because tats a bit out of the way.

The first half of the week could be dreary and cold but if necessary I’ll camp up in the Mountain Laurel of Cannan Heights and pitch a tent, โ›บ and use the heater to get warm with a good book. Then if necessary, hang up a tarp and have a nice fire and head to bed early. I got to make sure I have mantles for my lantern, ๐Ÿฎ especially eoyj long nights now coming up.

In four weeks on October 29 the sun will be setting at 5:52 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 46 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain showers, partly sunny skies and temperatures between 52 and 42 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 55 and 36 degrees. The record high of 77 degrees was set back in 1946.

Despite the hick ups in my budget lately, I think it will prove to be a good year for my retirement and mid term savings goals. ๐Ÿ’ธ I’m really hopeful for a better tomorrow, especially as I save for retirement. It’s going to take many more years but the off grid property will eventually become a reality, ๐Ÿก where I can farm, burn, and hopefully protect myself from the worst consequence of climate change. Cows and goats are a lot of fun to watch, solar power is fun to watch on the meter, and it’s fun to watch the discarded bottle shrivel up in the fire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Fortunately in Pennsylvania and West Virginia I’ll get a good respite from the city and get to enjoy country living. ๐Ÿšœ For at least a week. Western Maryland has some pretty redneck country too.

Looking ahead, November ๐Ÿฅง is a month away, Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 5 weeks, December ๐ŸŽ„ is in 2 months, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 10 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 12 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 13 weeks, New Years Day 2019 ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 3 months, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 15 weeks and Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค is in 16 weeks.

It’s raining again. I’m heading inside.

Payne Mountain From Wakely Pond

September 29, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures are dropping quickly tonight, I wore a t-shirt ๐Ÿ‘• out hiking earlier but by evening heading home it was cold enough to warrant turning on the heat in the truck.

Sunday dinner at the parents house was good. ๐Ÿ Mom and dad made spaghetti and meatballs, only the way a mother could make them. Yummy ๐Ÿ˜‹. I also got the inside of the truck picked up, floors vacuumed and things cleaned up a bit around the apartment. This week after work I’ll work on packing and finalizing organizing for vacation. ๐Ÿ’ผ Blodgett Hill was pretty neat to explore, I’d like to explore it more come the winter or maybe next year.

I rode the exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ for a while while watching YouTube after getting home from the folks house ๐Ÿก. Now I’m laying back in bed working on the blog post. My neighbor isn’t home so I don’t have to worry about the noise from the bike. ๐Ÿ”• Took a sleeping pill ๐Ÿ’Š and I have set alarm โฐ for 6:30 in the morning so I can drop off the truck in the morning. The wheel noise has gotten louder, I’m pretty sure it’s a failing wheel bearing but I’ll let the mechanic figure it out ๐Ÿ”งand not guess myself. Hopefully it will get fixed and vacation will go well.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 10th. North wind 6 to 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1991.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 8% illuminated. The moon will rise at 8:55 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Friday night with showers likely. The Hunter Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Saturday, October 12th. Perfect timing for my trip. The sun will rise at 6:50 am with the first light at 6:22 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 10 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming south in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1905.

Midweek looks like it will be quite rainy. ๐Ÿ’ฆ We could use the rain. West Virginia is particularly dry but the fire risk is still quite low probably because the Mountain Laurel stores a lot of moisture and the fields are still quite green. No fire bans down there, I checked ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Not sure how good the colors will be down there. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚

I am thinking about visiting Hyner View on the way down to West Virginia next Sunday but I might wait until the trip back north just because I don’t know how good the colors will be there ๐Ÿ‚but it should be good by Columbus Day Weekend. Plus it’s a bit out of the way and I’m probably going to be a rush to get down to West Virginia. First few nights in West Virginia I’ll probably be Cannan Heights.

In four weeks on October 27 the sun will be setting at 5:55 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 45 minutes and 31 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 43 and 37 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 56 and 36 degrees. The record high of 79 degrees was set back in 1963.

Looking ahead, Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 2 weeks, Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 6 weeks, Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ is in 7 weeks, Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 2 months, December ๐ŸŽ„ is in 9 weeks, Bill of Rights Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 11 weeks, Days are Getting Longer โ˜€๏ธ is in 12 weeks, National Pie Day ๐Ÿฐ is in 16 weeks, 5:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 17 weeks, 37th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 4 months.

Water Dropping

September 25, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ! Next Wednesday is Average High is 65 ๐Ÿ‚. Mostly sunny and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. First full day of autumn although it will feel more like late summer than autumn today. But at this point the average temperature is dropping fast.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 74 degrees at 4pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 12th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2017.

The sun will set at 6:48 pm with dusk around 7:16 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday. Last day with more daylight then night today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 7pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2018, we had mist in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1947.

Ended up having to go to the public library to deal with some client issues. ๐Ÿ“š Then I ended up working on some other projects and studying my options on the Free Campsites website. โ›บ Also ws looking at some DEC data and wasting time on Facebook. When I got home I ended up watching my YouTube fix ๐Ÿ“ผ, mostly watching somebody move goats and hogs around their farm ๐Ÿ .

Dropped off my insurance reduction certificate ๐Ÿ“œto state farm and I assume soon I’ll get a reduced bill and I’ll have to update the payment online. Or maybe I’ll pay the full amount if it’s too late and they’ll send me a check back for overpayment. I looked at changing insurers but decided against it for now. ๐Ÿ’ญ

I was reading ๐Ÿ“– that article this morning about the Trump campaign selling plastic straws with his name on it. I was thinking how cheesy. ๐Ÿ• I actually picked up a straw that was litter on Moss Island over the weekend. Looked like it had been there for a while, the plastic broke easily in my fingers when I picked it up. Later in the evenings I tossed it in the fire it was gone in seconds, just carbon dioxide and water vapor. ๐Ÿ”ฅBut littering is bad. ๐Ÿšฎ I hate when I find it in the wilderness.

A picture perfect weekend to start out autumn. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, scattered showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 3pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees.

Saturday I’ll probably work on preparing for my vacation and walking ๐Ÿšถ out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ. Then maybe on Sunday I’ll hike Bennett Hill and go out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. Probably won’t stay out there overnight as I have to drop my truck off on Monday morning.

So Monday I’m getting my truck looked at. ๐Ÿ”ง New shop I’ve never been to before but the online reviews are good. I doubt it is super major problem but we’ll see what the estimate says. I just want to make sure it’s working well by vacation.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Average High is 65 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:35 pm with dusk at 7:03 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 66 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1927.

White Pine on Summit

September 23, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Autumn ๐Ÿ‚! Back to work, I have ethics training, lucky me. Whatever that advertising at the bus stop said. It’s important not to be indicted for a crime due to ethic violations, because it can be hard to buy guns for hunting when you have an outstanding warrant. Three weeks to Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ. Partly sunny and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees.

Today will be scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. I brought my rain coat. Might be wet later and certainly warm. โ˜” Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 85 degrees at 1pm. 16 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 3pm. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1895.

The sun will set at 6:51 pm with dusk around 7:19 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 58 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 30th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 6pm. West wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1963.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Maximum dew point of 57 at 4pm. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 58 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees.

No camping this weekend. I want to get Mr. Sqweak checked out before I hrd back out to the wilderness. Plus I should save money, ๐Ÿ’ต get packed up and ready for vacation. I need to research camping opportunities in Jefferson National Forest in Southern West Virginia. I just need a week off before I spend nine or ten days traveling. ๐Ÿš™

Mr. Sqweak Sqweak. ๐Ÿ Big Red is getting looked at next Tuesday. The first appointment I could get at the dealership was Saturday and I doubt a local shop ๐Ÿช could work on it before then. Or they’d want to work on it Friday and it would get stuck in the shop all weekend. I haven’t heard back from shop yet about my online appointment but they’ll call ๐Ÿ“ž today. I did get an email from Onstar saying that the system detected a maintenance issue but I’m not sure if that was because I filed ๐Ÿ“‚ an online request for service. I expect that I’ll be able to pick it up the same day.

Price Chopper Garbage Bags. The other day when I went to the store I ended up buying black garbage bags at Price Chopper. ๐Ÿšฎ I’m quite happy with them. ๐Ÿ˜Š They don’t seem to rip as much as the cheaper bags when I smash down the garbage. As I either burn or it in the woods or pay two dollars ๐Ÿ’ต a bag at the transfer station, you really need to smash it down as much as possible. As I compost, and at left recycle the cans and glass (and paper separately), I can take the trash to the outside can once a month or less after compaction with my boots.

Litter in the back country. It seems like since they’ve added the picnic tables and outhouses to the campsites on Pisceo-Powley Road litter has become a bigger problem. ๐Ÿšฎ More cans and just miscellaneous stuff. I will burn and pack out what’s reasonable in my campsite but I’m not going clean the whole area up. This one campsite I visited putting my kayak in to the East Canada Creek somebody had left doughnuts and a fire smoldering full of debris. ๐Ÿ’ญ I don’t care if people burn packaging ๐Ÿ”ฅ but people should take home and recycle โ™ป what doesn’t burn.

Credit card and vacation. ๐Ÿ’ณ I figured out that the expenses I have for vacation will fall onto the November card payment so I’ll have a few paychecks before then to build up savings to pay it. And I don’t expect vacation to be more than $500 and probably less, depending on gas prices and how many nights I stay at developed campgrounds probably mostly just for a shower ๐Ÿšฟ.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 6:15 pm with dusk at 6:43 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 59 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1920.

The Weekend that Was

Saturday was an action packed day but a good one. I started the day pretty early with the Save the Pine Bush Bird Hike and Neil Reilly did not disappoint. I wish I had some better glass. I got to invest in some binoculars. And a good bird book. ๐ŸฆNeil helped me learn a lot of birds but will I remember them all? I really need to learn more about the flora and fauna I’m observing in the wilderness. It would help with hunting too, especially if I eventually get into big game when I own my own land. ๐Ÿ”ญ

I bought a spatula at the Hannaford in Esperance. Forgot mine at home. $10 with tax seemed pricey but I figured hopefully this all metal one will hold up. ๐Ÿด Then I can keep the big camp spatula for my camping supply box and use the other one at home. Unlike some of the spatulas I’ve previously owned this one is a single piece of metal so it’s less likely to break at the weld like some of the other I own. I burn a lot of food so I break a lot of spatulas scraping pans. ๐Ÿณ But now I have a camp and a home one and hopefully the home one lasts a long time.

Moss Island was fun but the colors were just changing and it’s the third time I’ve been there so it’s less interesting now. Still a nice hike, as was doing some of the Erie Canal Trail through the deep railroad cut. ๐Ÿšถ Japanese Knotweed is really taking over part of the gorge though. That invasive species is everywhere these days it seems. ๐ŸŒพWent out for a short paddle on the Mohawk River from Little Falls past Moss Island to the old Fink Basin Bridge foundation. ๐ŸŒ‰ It’s hard to spot the foundation at this point because the Japanese Knotweed is all over it. Needless to say, I’m very concerned about the Japanese Knotweed taking over everything. When they were pumping out the lock, the water Goya bit choppy but I was far enough away not to be real impacted. That Lock 17 drops 40 feet so it’s a pretty big lock with a lot of water to move downstream.

Leaving the Pine Bush hike I was a bit concerned about the squeak that was coming from the rear wheel of my truck. ๐Ÿšš It sounded like a brake noise because it changed when I applied the brakes. But they’re working fine and after a few good hard applies of the brakes they’ve mostly gone away. Think it’s either mud or maybe just glaze that’s built up from last week overheating the brakes heading down through Durham. Should have used a lower gear heading down the hill. Heading towards Stratford I smelled somebody burning their garbage and thought it might be the brakes but the smell went away after driving past their farm. Hillbilly incense getting me all upset. If y’all going to burn your plastic garbage, at least burn it in a hot fire so it don’t stink. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I checked, rotators aren’t warm and aren’t dragging – and after a few hard braking the noise is mostly gone. But it’s concerning enough I scheduled an appointment to have it looked at. Pretty sure it’s just the drum brake mechanism is acting up.

Driving up to Pisceo-Powley Road from Little Falls I stopped and got some sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ and tomatoes. ๐Ÿ… I then stopped at Green Acres Drive In and got Pumpkin Ice Cream ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŽƒ which I swear the cream was a bit rancid. It was okay but I don’t think I’d get end of the season ice cream again from them.

I ended up camping at campsite five at Pisceo-Powley Road. โ›บ They cut up the tree that fell during that severe thunderstorm that came through โšก that mid August long weekend that I delayed my entry to avoid. I’m glad I missed that storm a lot of branches came down around this campsite but the DEC did a nice job cleaning up around the site. I like that campsite a lot because it’s remote and I can listen to music, ๐ŸŽถ shoot guns ๐Ÿ”ซ and burn whatever I want without bothering folks. ๐Ÿ”ฅJust like when I own my own land. No neighbors, no rules. ๐Ÿ“ But that doesn’t mean I’ll trash my own land. That said finding burnt out of aluminum cans wasn’t cool. I flattened them and will take home for recycling. It your going to burn stuff in the woods at least pack out what doesn’t burn completely. ๐Ÿšฏโ™ป Outhouse seat also seemed like somebody broke it. A shame, the outhouse is only a year old. Still works but the wood in the seat is cracked. ๐Ÿ’บ

The storm in August meant there was quite a bit of dead and down wood around camp. I had plenty for the fire. I always try to get wood a bit farther away from camp to save the close-by wood for other campers who get here late or myself for that matter. ๐ŸŒฒ

Setting up camp went well but I discovered that I spilled bleach and water in my truck bed. Ruined another pair of jeans ๐Ÿ‘–. Ducks but I needed more jeans to wear on casual days to work. I can wear the bleached pair of jeans at home. Made some sweet sausage ๐Ÿฃand mashed potatoes for dinner – along with sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ. I wanted to make angel hair pasta ๐Ÿ˜‡ with dinner but I forgot to pack butter.

Sun sets early this time of year but I had the mess cleaned up in my truck, dinner cooked and the lights strung by dark which occurred relatively late in the woods on this very clear day. ๐ŸŒ‡ Still it was pitch black before 7:30 which made for a long night but with the two batteries powering the lights it wasn’t a big deal. I got things done that needed to be done by then including getting a fire going. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Got cold and put the hoodie and long pants on. Even with the warm weather it gets cold at night. With the long night, I was shocked ๐Ÿ˜ฒ how quickly I drank the six pack I brought. ๐Ÿป I wasn’t trying to get drunk but I made a lot of beer dissappear quickly. Oh well, I must have been thirsty and I slept it off. Minor hang over this morning.

This morning was quite nice I had eggs ๐Ÿณ and sausage along with coffee. โ˜• It was a cold start but it warmed up relatively quickly. I ended up hanging out in the warm sun for a while, listening to the radio ๐Ÿ“ป for a while and then swinging in the hammock while working on some blog posts.

Midday I went for a kayak paddle down the East Canada Creek ๐Ÿšค and it was quite colorful and quiet out on the creek. Water levels were pretty low. But I made it over the beaver dam and the leaves were nice. ๐Ÿ Didn’t bother with the fishing pole as I’ve never had much luck fishing there. Spent a little time at the potholers but it was quite cold and the sky had clouded up and it was getting late.

I got home, unpacked and scheduled an appointment for next week to have my truck looked at.๐Ÿ”ง The noise seems to come and go but I think it’s getting worse so I should get it fixed. I’ll probably stay in town next week because I need to save money ๐Ÿ’ต and I also I don’t want something to break while I am out of town.

I’ll post more photos ๐Ÿ“ท and videos ๐ŸŽฅ throughout the week.

South Mountain

September 20, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Six weeks to November ๐Ÿฅง. It will be here before you know it. Mostly sunny and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.

Today will have patchy dense fog before 9am. Otherwise, sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 7th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1946.

The sun will set at 6:57 pm with dusk around 7:25 pm, which is one minute and 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 72 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 11pm. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1973.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 23rd. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6pm. Calm wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1895.

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 85. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. ๐ŸŒžMaximum dew point of 61 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

Tonight I’ll load the kayak on my truck ๐Ÿšคand load my gear for camping โ›บ as I have to get an early start for the Pine Bush Birds the Word Hike tomorrow. ๐Ÿฆ That hike starts at eight at the Discovery Center. I’m debating between paddling in the Mohawk River tomorrow near Moss Island or Stewart Landing tomorrow then the potholers on Sunday.ย I forgot to get propane tank filled but I’m hopeful I will have enough for tomorrow, otherwise it will be a campfire breakfast. ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธย I think the tank still has a pound or two left in it, but it definitely should be filled before vacation.

So I got these black boots ๐Ÿ‘ข because that’s what they had in my size and I figured that they wouldn’t show the mud and muck so much. But now that I think about it some more, I’m sure the salt will show up. The other advantage is they will polish well with the same black shoe paint I use with my dress shoes. Not sure if I really care for the style but I’m sure with the salt and all the hiking I do they’ll probably only last until spring. Might look really nice with khakis for work. I don’t really care that much about style, it’s different. Change is tough.

I repotted one of the spider plants ๐ŸŒพin my office that has long struggled. Maybe root rot or maybe I over fertilized it. Four out of the five plants are doing well, two of them I gave away. Hoping to pot up two or three more next year so we can have greenery in every window in our office. ๐Ÿข Makes the bleakness of the winter much nicer.

I’m thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about doing a side trip down to MacDowell County, WV after visiting New River Gorge. As you may know that’s where Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty started. I’ve heard it’s not changed much over the years. ๐Ÿ  I thought originally about going down to Hazard, Kentucky but I think that’s too far out of the way to just drive through and stop and grab a picture. I’d rather have an excuse to visit an area beyond just visiting a hick town.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until November ๐Ÿฅง when the sun will be setting at 5:48 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 59 and 48 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

November is actually my favorite season of the year. ๐ŸฆŒ It’s time a before the snow is usually on the ground,ย but the leaves are off the trees and the skies often are quite blue. The air is crisp, the nights are cool and long. Big game season opens in the Southern Zone, Thanksgiving rolls around. ๐Ÿฆƒ It’s the month before winter really gets underway most years.

Russian or Chinese Trolls Who Like Write?

I keep getting these rather strangely worded emails from people offering to write articles for my blog.๐Ÿ“ฉ Many of them seem like foreign language speakers, maybe Russian troll farms or Chinese intelligence officers. I just ignore these emails โ˜  and put them in the trash bin. โ™ป My blog is my place, so I don’t have guest bloggers, as I like to have one-hundred percent control over the content.

Fall is a great time for smartphones and camping!

Hey there,

Fall is my favorite time of year to go camping. Iโ€™ll love the crisp air, the changing leaves, and the chance to disconnect before the craziness of the holidays begins.

However, while I certainly enjoy time away from email, texts, and social media, I wouldnโ€™t dream of leaving my smartphone at home. Thanks to a variety of helpful apps, trackers, and tools, my smartphone has basically become my modern-day multi-tool.

Iโ€™d like to write an article for your site about how you can use your smartphone to make your next camping trip even better. Is this something youโ€™d be interested in posting on your site? If so, Iโ€™m happy to send it to you free of charge. Just let me know. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks a lot!

Campfire

Even on farm roads!

I would like to be a writer of articles. I also like to post weekly updates of hiking, trail running , backpacking,cross-country ski and snowshoe trail conditions for all of Western New York.

I wrote 2 articles in the Snowshoe Magazine. And I will send along a cover letter and resume.

I also wondering if there any paid positions available. If not here do a suggestion of another company I contact.

I would give Conditions and updates on Dirt roads , gravel roads, fire roads , single track trails, hiking trails, bike trails and farmers roads, farmers trails and access roads and access trails. It would be year around reports for hiking, backpacking, trail running, biking and walking . In the winter skiing and snowshoeing. Also possibly dog walking and horseback riding.
