September 15, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Four weeks to Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚. Partly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees. Seems like a nice morning. I’m making up some french toast ๐Ÿง‡ and coffee โ˜• now and going to soon take a shower ๐Ÿšฟ.

I think the plan for today is to hike Windham High Peak ๐Ÿ—ป and go out to my parents house ๐Ÿฒ for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿšถ I haven’t done Windham High Peak in a number of years and I have think it will be a nice hike, even if last time I was up there I was under impressed by the views. ๐Ÿ“ท

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 10th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am. West wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1915.

The sun will set at 7:06 pm with dusk around 7:34 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10pm. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1964.

The display in my bedroom is still getting stuck and malfunctioning a lot. ๐Ÿ“Ÿ I think I’ve found the bad solder joint and the board, I will have to hit it again with the soldering iron. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Next weekend keeps looking increasingly hot and sunny. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I think it might be good for one more weekend at the potholers after I do the Pine Bush Bird Hike ๐Ÿฆ early on Saturday morning.

Been thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about hiking back to Pharoah Lake in late October or early November. ๐Ÿšถ I made up a revised map ๐Ÿ—พ yesterday and was thinking it would be a nice day hike. The hike back there is an easy 3 1/2 miles each way over virtually flat terrain (you gain only 200 ft in elevation from Beaver Brook Road) but the 420 acre lake ๐Ÿ  is 5 miles around it so it’s a good distance. Do it in November and all your bound to see is a few deer hunters, ๐ŸฆŒ the crowds ๐Ÿ‘ช will be long gone.

I haven’t talked or given a whole lot of thought towards saving for my off grid house ๐Ÿก lately. The automatic investments are doing their thing and I’m getting closer one step at a time. Yeah, a lot of people I went to school with or know are buying houses out in the country ๐Ÿฎ but I just can’t see doing that while I still live in New York. I’m fine spending a lot of weekends for now in the wilderness, camping, cooking and having fires. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:17 pm with dusk at 6:45 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 55 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1930.

Dying Spruce in Powley Place

It’s kind of sad how many of the Spruce Trees – many old growth – are dying in Powley Place. A lot have died and been chopped for firewood even in the past eight or so years I’ve been coming here regularly. Spruce Cranker aka Old Man’s Beard isn’t a new disease but its finally taken ahold here.

September 2, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ! Kind of a rainy, wet Labor Day although things seem to be improving. I made some coffee up โ˜• and are finishing taking down my campsite. I took down the flags last night and my truck cap stayed pretty dry last night despite the intense rain we had for a while. ๐Ÿ’ฆ This campsite is well drained so the rain wasn’t really an issue.

This Labor Day morning is cloudy, damp and 57 degrees at the Perkins Clearing Easement. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 57 degrees. Not going to be a real nice day but it looks like the rain has let up and the skies will clear around 7 pm.

Labor Day will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 1pm and 5pm. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 64 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 2nd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of Perkins Clearingprecipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953.

The sun will set at 7:31 pm with dusk around 8:00 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 60 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 52 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 14th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6pm. West wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was very sticky. It got down to 73 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1976.

So Labor Day Weekend has come and gone. Well at least the camping โ›บ part of it once I finish taking down camp. I am in no rush at any rate. I might go for a walk ๐Ÿšถ at the Speculator River Walk before heading home ๐Ÿก but then I’ll be home. Four weeks from now I’ll be West Virginia, ๐Ÿ‘as I’m doing my road trip a week earlier this year as usually the colors are done by Columbus Day Weekend in the high country and because I’m house sitting as my parents house the following week. ๐Ÿถ

The camp stove continues to work well with both burners โ™จ and I’ll replace the broken chair ๐Ÿšฎbefore the next time I camp. ๐Ÿ’บNeed to get propane, especially now that I know they don’t sell it at Tractor Supply ๐Ÿšœ in Amsterdam. That said, there were plenty of other places that sold propane, but I skipped it and I made out okay, although I’ll need it for the next trip.

I could have gotten propane at Frank’s Gun Store on the way up here but I’d probably end up buying yet another gun ๐Ÿ”ซ and honestly I need to save some money as my car insurance is due at the end of the month. ๐Ÿ’ต I thought about switching insurers but I’ll probably just drop off my insurance reduction certificate from the class to State Farm. I like the coverage and rates of Progressive but it’s a pain figuring out all the details of the switch. ๐Ÿ”Ž The difference in price for equivalent plans isn’t that great.

Probably cheaper to get propane at Tractor Supply, it’s a loss leader for them to sell more cowboy hats ๐ŸŽฉ and in my case more Carhart shit that I just got to have. But self restraint is possible in hopes of a better life tomorrow in a freer state. โœ… Gotta have the AR-15 to ventilate that garbage burning barrel, when you live out in the sticks in a red state. How else are you going to have fun putting holes in your barrel?๐Ÿ›ข๐Ÿ”ซ

Changing topics, I need to get a better shovel. It’s hard digging through the roots to bury the poop at the end of the camping trip. ๐Ÿ’ฉ A troel works but it’s hard work. While the bucket shitter means I’m only digging one hole, I like digging a deep hole because I hate finding toilet paper flowers in the woods. I guess I should separate out the toilet paper and burn it but as long as it’s buried deep enough with the bacteria from the poop it should rot away quickly. I bet the local hardware store would sell a small spade โ™ค for such purposes.

Cool next weekend with temperatures running 15 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 63. Maximum dew point of 49 at 12pm. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 59. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees. Probably won’t be so cool back in Albany but hardly swimming weather at any rate. I might hunt next weekend ๐Ÿ€ at a local state forest ๐ŸŒฒ but I doubt I’ll head out of town for a few more weeks. I like traveling but becomes a lot of work after a while and there is a lot of things I could be doing closer to home. ๐Ÿข

Plus all that beer drinking ๐Ÿป around the campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅ probably ain’t that healthy for me or my finances. I returned 107 beer cans from camp to Shoprite the other day. โ™ป It’s all from camping because I don’t drink at home. I don’t always eat the healthiest crap up at camp and maybe have a smoke from time to time. ๐Ÿด Camping is fun but maybe too much fun at times.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 6:27 pm with dusk at 6:56 pm. On that day in 2018, we had cloudy, mist and temperatures between 72 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1963.

Saturday I hiked Panther Mountain

September 1, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 60 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. A few sprinkles here and there but no heavy rain yet. Kind of a dark and breezy nih in the woods. ๐Ÿ’จThe skies will clear Tuesday around 8 am.

A very brief rain shower โ˜” made me take down the hammock and grab the rain coat but as quick as it came it stopped. I sat by the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ for a while but decided to hang up my hammock after I leaned over and my chair snapped. I’m not surprised ๐Ÿ˜ฒ, I knew it was about to break. I usually only get about a year out of those camp chairs unfortunately. I’ll leave the old one at Walmart for landfill disposal and pick up a new one the next time I’m there.

The wind ๐Ÿƒ caught one of the candles on the ground on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and proceeded to start a minor grass fire. ๐ŸŒพ I was able to stomp it out but I had no idea how combustible the grass was up here.

I fully expect in a few hours maybe less it will start to pour. ๐Ÿ’ฆ But I have everything put away that shouldn’t get wet or would otherwise require drying when I got home. It may very well be a quite wet night but it’s been a good long weekend up north and this campsite is well drained so I expect no flooding here at camp. Probably leave fairly early tomorrow and drive home in the rain and get unpacked. ๐Ÿก Not a big deal. Probably next weekend I’ll stay in town. The following week I’m heading down to New York for work so it will be nice to have a weekend just at home.

Tonight will have showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after midnight. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 56 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 6th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 12am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 2017.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 19% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:05 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Wednesday night with a chance of showers then partly cloudy skies. The Harvest Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Friday, September 13th. The sun will rise at 6:22 am with the first light at 5:52 am, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 10 hours and 50 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over last night.

Labor Day will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 4pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. ๐ŸŒง High of 66 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 30th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 1pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953.

Today was kind of a lazy day. I reolacd the other burner in the camp stove and reglued the knob that had come loose and it seems like both burners are working good in the stove. โ™จ With colder weather ahead I plan to be doing more cooking. I did go for a brief walk but I didn’t hear much squirrel activity I think due to the unstable weather. So it was spaghetti ๐Ÿ and meatballs for dinner. At least it seems like both burners are working well on the camp stove. The bulk of the day was spent reading ๐Ÿ“– a book in my hammock about the mission creep of the defense department. As defense increasingly becomes the only department that politicians want to fund, its mission keeps expanding. ๐Ÿ’ฃ

This upcoming week I want to hook up the low voltage disconnect reset button again ๐Ÿ”˜in case I ever need to reset the power while camping on these longer nights. Doesn’t happen raglan anymore but I hate to be plunged into darkness without an easy way to restore power to the truck cap.

In four weeks on September 29 the sun will be setting at 6:41 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 50 minutes and 47 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 68 and 47 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 67 and 46 degrees. The record high of 86 degrees was set back in 1921.

Looking ahead, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 3 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is a month away and Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 6 weeks.

September 1, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy September! ๐ŸŽƒ It’s officially metrological autumn. Three weeks to Autumn Equinox๐Ÿ‚. Mostly cloudy and 56 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. โ˜ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 46 degrees.

Laying back in the hammock, looking at the clouds. I’m still chewing over going for a hike at Watch Hill. ๐Ÿšถ It’s a nice hike but it’s a bit of a trip. north from here. I kind of just want to hang out at camp and read today and maybe have a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ before the rain comes tonight. I don’t want to go out hiking and get caught in a shower ๐Ÿšฟ although that doesn’t seem likely until late here in the Adirondacks. It’s not a super long hike, so I could decide after lunch.

Today will be partly cloudy โ›…, with a high of 68 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 25th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 6pm. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1953.

The sun will set at 7:32 pm with dusk around 8:02 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely, then occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm after midnight. ๐ŸŒง Low of 55 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 6th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 12am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 2017.

On this day in 1985, a joint Americanโ€“French expedition locates the wreckage of the Titanic. ๐Ÿšข Don’t cry for me Argentina, the truth is that I never left you. ๐ŸŽถ Okay, wrong sound track. That said, I have very little interest in being on a cruise. I just like being out in the wilderness and making my own rules. ๐ŸŒฒ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:54 pm with dusk at 7:23 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 71 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.

Quaker Lake

August 31, 2019 Afternoon

I decided to hike Pillsbury Mountain It’s a fairly decent afternoon but cool even by late August standards in the mountains. Partly sunny and 57 degrees on Pillsbury Mountain. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 43 degrees.

It’s actually a bit cool on the firetower but warm enough sitting out in the sun โ˜€ . The firetower continues to be in rough shape as is Old Military Road ๐Ÿš™ but it is passable and the tower open. ๐Ÿ—ผ Pretty good views of the West Canada Wilderness and Perkins Clearing and the Jessup River area from here.

At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 56 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph.

I may try next to hike back to Pillsbury Lake ๐Ÿก but it depends on the time. That’s 3.5 miles each way with a 300 climb up there so not a long or difficult trip but time is tight โŒš with the earlier sunset around 7:30. ๐ŸŒ‡ Well I’m going to climb the tower one more time with my other camera and then head back down the mountain. ๐Ÿ“ท

August 31, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Where did Summer go? Trump must have stolen it away. ๐Ÿ˜” Three weeks to Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘. Autumn is coming. Mostly sunny and 49 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. Calm wind. With the sun it doesn’t feel that cold though. โ˜€

I ended up deciding to go up to that campsite I like up in Perkins Clearing in the Adirondacks. โ›บ I did drive up to an swing by Fox Lair but that campsite was taken and I honestly didn’t want to listen to the road noise all weekend long. I thought I stop by at any rate. This campsite has good views of the skies so it’s nice on starry nights ๐ŸŒƒ although I don’t know how I’ll string up a tarp should it rain on Sunday. My guess is that I probably won’t.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. That said it is usually colder up north. Maximum dew point of 48 at 9am. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1953.

Today I’m planning on either hiking back to Pillsbury Lake or Pillsbury Mountain. ๐Ÿ—ป I am a bit undecided on that point. I’ve done Pillsbury Mountain before but there are nice views from the fire tower. Nice cool and clear day to boot. I just got to finish securing camp, change, and I should be on the trail by ten o’clock.

The sun will set at 7:34 pm with dusk around 8:03 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 4am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 5th. Light north wind. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1967.

I got these really nice sunglasses ๐Ÿ˜Ž from Walmart. While they are all plastic, they are lightweight but not overly dark and have good coverage over the eyes. ๐Ÿ‘€ You can almost forget that you are wearing them.

I finished reading ๐Ÿ“– Paul Theroux’s Deep South. What a great book. It makes me want to explore the rural south, especially the Ozarks and Missouri which seems like some really wild country with few restrictions on guns ๐Ÿ”ซ or open burning. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Plus they are very friendly towards farming, ๐Ÿฎ homesteading ๐Ÿทand off grid living. ๐Ÿก

On this day in 1965, Super Guppy took it’s first flight. โœˆ The aero Spacelines Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft that is used for hauling outsize cargo components. It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy, the first of the Guppy aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines, which in turn was named for its resemblance to a pregnant guppy. Five were built in two variants, both of which were colloquially referred to as the “Super Guppy”. Now crank up that Steve Miller record, Jet Liner. ๐ŸŽถ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ when the sun will be setting at 6:56 pm with dusk at 7:24 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 71 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.
